Jamie Mackay: host of The Country on Groundswell-backed farmer Geoffrey Young getting elected to Beef and Lamb New Zealand board

An unlikely new addition to the Beef and Lamb New Zealand board is making waves in the red meat industry.

Groundswell-backed farmer Geoffrey Young has recently been elected to the Beef and Lamb New Zealand board, having won the election by 8,777 weighted votes.

Geoffrey Young beat out incumbent director and chair Andrew Morrison by 2,190 votes.

Jamie Mackay says Geoffrey Young wants to rectify the disconnect between farming advocacy groups Beef + Lamb, Federated Farmers and Dairy NZ and disenfranchised farmers.

Once a Warrior, Now a Social Entrepreneur

“You have to have a bias for action in the world if you want to do your part to make it a better place.”

         —Jake Wood

Jake Wood’s “bias for action” is indisputable: after graduating from college, he joined the Marine Corps and served two years overseas. His return to civilian life wasn’t easy. Like many veterans, Jake was faced with a loss in structure, purpose, and sense of impact. After a close friend and fellow veteran committed suicide, Jake founded non-profit Team Rubicon with a dual purpose: (1) to serve global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises, and (2) to reintegrate veterans into civilian life through opportunities to utilize military training for communities in need.

Ten years later, Jake welcomed his second daughter, who required surgery shortly after she was born, into the world. The experience sparked a new idea to empower more people to have a greater impact and sense of purpose. In 2021, Jake co-founded Groundswell, a corporate philanthropy platform that allows you to “give like Gates, be taxed like Warren Buffet, and be recognized like Rockefeller.”

We invited Jake to lead us through his purpose journey, from creating social entrepreneurship ventures to the impact your company can make through them.

Bryce McKenzie: Groundswell NZ co-founder encourages farmers to skip filling in Census to protest emissions tax

Bryce McKenzie: Groundswell NZ co-founder encourages farmers to skip filling in Census to protest emissions tax

Lately, a subset of farmers have been refusing to fill in the Agricultural Census, despite it being a legal requirement.

Groundswell is a driving force behind these farmers, as they're united in wanting to protest the Government's emissions tax.

Co-founder of Groundswell, Bryce McKenzie, says that he's noticed this protest is having some effect on the Government, as they've extended the Census collection deadline.

"We're not saying we don't want to do this, because there's a lot of good that can come from doing a Census as well. But what we're saying is- let's change the metric so that we're actually getting fair value for what we're doing."

The turn-out may not have been as big, but the organisers are still deeming today's protests a success.

Thousands of farmers have revved their tractors, trucks and utes in protest to the Government's proposed livestock emissions plan.

Groundswell New Zealand co-founder Bryce McKenzie says they're pleased, considering they had eight days to prepare.

He says it's the busiest time of the year, with lambing season in full swing and farmers planting crops and vegetables.

Jim van der Poel: Dairy NZ Chair says if Groundswell is unhappy with emissions scheme, it should take it up with Govt

Jim van der Poel: Dairy NZ Chair says if Groundswell is unhappy with emissions scheme, it should take it up with Govt

Farming organisations are hitting back at Groundswell after the controversial group slagged them off.

Groundswell has called for the resignation of the chairs of both Beef+Lamb and DairyNZ, saying they haven't been tough enough on the Government's emission pricing scheme.

Beef + Lamb Chairman Andrew Morrison says his group would prefer no pricing, but says the Government's made it clear at least some will happen.

He says they don't support any system which would put farmers and communities at risk.

Meanwhile Dairy NZ Chair Jim van der Poel says if Groundswell is unhappy with the scheme, it should take it up with the Government.

It says it will be pushing strongly during the consultation process in the coming weeks to make the system more workable for farmers.

Nurturing our Disruptive Nature: Charlene Li

Disruption and change have been with us forever. But disruption and change at work, in business, in organizations—somehow it seems harder. It's unpredictable, it's uncertain, and it's stressful. And we often back away from it as a result.

In her conversation with Jesse, Charlene Li reflects on a career spent empowering everyone—from frontline workers to CEOs—to embrace and move forward in the face of disruptive change. She discusses her experience growing up in Michigan as a woman of color, and how it led her to embrace her own disruptive nature. She describes the structural attributes and convictions that allowed organizations like Adobe, Amazon, and Southern New Hampshire University to see the needs of their future customers - and overcome deeply entrenched barriers and elements of the status quo to serve them. And she offers a poignant look at why organizations in every industry must embrace Diversity and Inclusion now if they are to reach their potential for growth and impact.
