Adoption is a contentious topic in the world today. And for this episode we have the privilege of sharing a story about a child of adoption, who grew up to be a pastor with a unique view on the doctrine of adoption.

Kevin Haley has been a United Methodist pastor for more than 40 years. He’s a father, husband, Grove City College graduate, and the son of both a loving pair of adoptive parents, and a 17-year-old woman who was brave enough to have him and put him up for adoption.

S3E30 Dr. Theon Hill - The Cloud of Witnesses

S3E30 Dr. Theon Hill - The Cloud of Witnesses

Ken welcomes long-time friend of the podcast, Dr. Theon Hill. Dr. Hill is a professor at Wheaton College, an Aspen Civil Society Fellow and emerging social intellectual. The two reminisce over the first episode of the BWM podcast where Dr. Hill was Ken's very first guest. Then, they have a lively reaction to the Grove City College report that condemns Critical Race Theory and disassociates from chapel speaker, Dr. Jemar Tisbey. Dr. Hill expresses his weariness over invitations to debate the realities of racism in America - he's done with those fruitless conversations. Theon explains the engagement of Dr. Martin Luther King, Bell Hooks, Margaret Thatcher and others to explore values and ventures that lead to the common good in local communities. He has developed a focus on local black-owned businesses to expand markets and reach, creating jobs and careers in community implementing his work at the Copenhagen Business School. He shares the influence of Cornell West, James Baldwin, Malcolm X and Eddie Glaude, Jr., who has become his personal mentor and friend. Dr. Hill admits his concern that democracy is slipping away in America, unable to embrace pluralism. In view of the Supreme Court's attempt to reverse Roe v. Wade, the two discuss the problems of constitutional "originalism." There is a cloud of witnesses we need to hear. Theon is committed to international empowerment and his church's commitment to justice and mercy.    SHOW NOTES

    Episode 74 - Jeff Bilbro

“The primary light we need to participate in democracy, to serve the common good, and to dwell as faithful citizens of the City of God is shed not by the Washington Post but by “the light of the world” (Jn 8:12).” That line is from the book Reading the Times, A Literary and Theological Inquiry into the News by today’s guest Jeff Bilbro. Jeff teaches in the English department at Grove City College and is a 36 year old who insists on nothing smarter than a flip phone, and who wrote large portions of the book on paper. His quick wit, love for good books and most importantly his love for the Lord made his conversation with Tom and Nate an enjoyable one. So join Tom, Nate and Jeff as the discuss Christian Formation, The news and its impact on our world, and a good book or two. But first a word from our sponsors. A past guest on our show, David Ayers, just began a new series of video lectures on Christian Marriage at Grove City College, which is a sponsor of our show. Episode 70 - Charlie Cotherman

For many of us the last two years have been the most difficult we’ve ever lived through. A global pandemic, racial tension, political unrest, it seems like there’s a new disaster ever looming on the horizon. And while we hear about the front lines of the medical fields and science, the spiritual frontlines aren’t as often spoken about. It’s not an easy thing when those you’ve ministered too, and worked beside become strangers seemingly overnight. Today’s guest, Charlie Cotherman is a pastor to pastors, and part of the Grove City’s Rural Ministry Project. And he shared what the recent months have been like for the pastors he works with, as well as his own church plant in Oil City. So join Tom, Nate and Charlie as they discuss his faith journey up to and through being a pastor in a pandemic. Episode 68 - Dr Carl Truman Returns

Hello and Welcome to today’s episode of the scattered seeds podcast. This show is unique in two distinct ways. One is that today marks the first time we’ve had a guest return for a second interview with Tom and Nate. Dr. Trueman was interviewed in the summer of 2019 as one of our first guests. Since then Dr. Trueman has taken the world by storm with a best-selling book called The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self. We are excited to share the story of the book, the ideas behind it, and what Dr. Trueman has learned since we saw him last. This interview is unique in another way as well. While many of you are listening to this show in our traditional format, there are some who are watching today’s episode. You can choose whichever format suits you best, but my suggestion would be to enjoy both, because there are subtle differences to be enjoyedYou can find the video on the Beverly Heights YouTube Page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VJTBpFjllI&list=PLBkdkQQey291JbdA8sWa944DobuTqdNPJ

    Episode 58 - Travis Barham

    Episode 58 - Travis Barham

In 1791 a document was drafted that was added to the main body of the constitution. It was the bill of rights, and its adoption limited the power that the federal government, and even the states, had in curtailing the rights of the citizens of this nation. It is made up of the first ten amendments to the US constitution and guarantees that the government cannot force anyone to follow one particular religion, or curtail anyone from practicing their faith. The government cannot curtail free speech either. The first amendment is clear. There are no caveats stating things like ‘freedom of speech is guaranteed unless it makes someone feel uncomfortable’, or ‘religion is to be freely practices, but only in the private sphere’. So why is it that Christians are having to fight to protect their rights to speak about their faith, or even to make personal, and business decisions that are in line with what they word of God says? This month our nation celebrated it’s 245th birthday. So we here at the Scattered Seeds Podcast decided to do something a little out of our norm in declaring July Faith and Freedom month. We’ve lined up two unique shows with guests from the Alliance Defending Freedom who came on to talk to us about a few pivotal supreme court cases, as well as a few other legal matters that we felt the Church at large should know about. Today’s guest is Travis Barham, Grove City Graduate and part of the legal team who represented Chike Uzuegbunam, the young man whose college restricted his right to share his faith on campus. So join Tom Nate and Travis as they discuss the case, the Supreme Court decision, and a little about why Travis decided to make a career out of defending faith and freedom. ‘The Life of the Mind’ at Grove City College. Episode 122: "Expressive Individualism, Social Imaginary, Deathworks, and More" with Carl Trueman

One of main developmental tasks of the adolescent stage is the journey to forming one’s identity. In today’s world, some of the most compelling, dangerous, misdirected cultural messages are leading kids down wrong paths as they look for answers to the question, Who am I? Dr. Carl Trueman has written a great new book that helps us understand and address these issues. We love chatting with Carl about his practical, hope-filled, and theologically informed cultural observations. Today is no exception as Duffy Robbins and I learn from Carl and his new book, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution, on this enlightening episode of Youth Culture Matters.
