Boomer & Gio Podcast (WHOLE SHOW)

Boomer & Gio Podcast (WHOLE SHOW)

    Hour 1

The Knicks are hanging on by a thread and had to be bailed out last night against the lowly Pistons. We also have a norovirus update: Aly, our makeup artist, is out today with it. She was touching our faces yesterday so we are probably in the incubation period. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the controversial call at the end of the Knicks game. The Pistons head coach called it the absolute worst call of the season, a no call. Bills player Dion Dawkins was on Vlad TV and called Micheal Clemons a ‘bitch boy’. In the final segment of the hour, it’s NFL combine week so Boomer is excited to hear about hand measurements. Caleb Williams will not be there throwing. Gio said it sounds like it’s not over yet in Chicago with Justin Fields. Boomer insists it’s over and they are taking Williams. Boomer said Williams needs to go there as the Bears have assets and a great defense and are going to be good.

    Hour 2

Gio ran into Saquon Barkley at a golf course yesterday. He just said hello and didn’t ‘chat him up’. Boomer gifts Gio with a Ghost brand golf bag. Gio said he was golfing with someone who was a ‘brain dead loser’. Boomer said Gio is becoming a real golfer because he gets annoyed at other golfers now. A caller said he quit golf ‘after taking a goose’s head off’. A caller wondered about quarterback Bo Nix in the draft and that got us talking about Daniel Jones and the Giants future at QB. Jerry returns for an update and Boomer gives him a framed photo from the golf course when they played in Vegas. Jerry starts with the Knicks beating the Pistons with help from the refs ‘no call’. As you might imagine, the Pistons head coach was pissed. Erin Andrews tells a story of a Bucs player being nasty to her back in the day and John Lynch and Derrick Brooks came to her defense. Al has a few newspaper clippings from his days covering the Bucs and has a picture of himself on the sideline as Wayne Chrebet caught a pass from Curtis Martin. In the final segment of the hour, we replayed a PSA we heard about getting a nose spray in case someone overdoses in your house.

    Hour 3

After a Duke player was injured over the weekend, the topic of storming the court is in the news. Boomer talked about a time at Maryland when the fans stormed the field. We somehow got on people being nervous about ‘the grid’ going down at some point. We talked about fans running on the field in baseball after Hank Aaron’s HR. Eddie ran on the field at Shea Stadium, stole some grass, and planted it in his backyard. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Knicks beating the Pistons thanks to a ‘no call’ by the refs. Jerry has audio from around MLB spring training camps. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about LeBron James’ son, Bronny and his NBA future. We also talked about other kids of legendary athletes who try to follow in their father’s footsteps.

    Hour 4

Tomorrow Gio and Al will be bringing their dogs into the studio thanks to the Farmer’s Dog. Gio is worried how his dog will behave at the station. We took a call from a flight attendant who thanked Boomer for reminding people to tip. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about our dogs coming in to work tomorrow and the file the company has on Eddie for things he’s done wrong in the past (like bringing his dog in). Jerry starts with audio from last night’s Knicks win with help from a ‘no call’ by the refs. Bills player Dion Dawkins was on Vlad TV and called Micheal Clemons a ‘bitch boy’.The Moment of The Day involves Gio seeing Saquon Barkley at the golf course and Gio’s golf partner was drooling all over him. In the final segment of the show, a caller wonders about Joe Burrow’s wrist.

Fans Storming Courts/Fields; Jerry With More Knicks & MLB Sound; Bronny James Following In LeBron's Footsteps (Hour 3)

Cam Perron and Al Holt | The 1948 Birmingham Black Barons

Cam Perron and Al Holt | The 1948 Birmingham Black Barons

The last Negro Leagues World Series was held in 1948, and one of the teams playing was the Birmingham Black Barons.  Why was that '48 squad so special, and how did a young white kid become so involved in preserving the legacy of Black baseball in Birmingham and beyond?  Find out as Bob chats with Cam Perron, author and Negro Leagues researcher, along with Al Holt, and former third baseman and outfielder for the Black Barons.

Hear Cam discuss how his interest in the Negro Leagues began in his pre-teens, which has led to friendships with over 100 former players and helping dozens of them secure pensions from Major League Baseball, with the help of Dr. Layton Revel.  Cam also talks about the distinct honor of having Hank Aaron, Bob's childhood idol, write the foreword to his 2021 book, "Comeback Season: My Unlikely Story of Friendship with the Greatest Living Negro League Baseball Players."

Hear Al Holt explain why it was always his dream to play for the Black Barons and what it was like to see a 17-year-old rookie named Willie Mays join the team in 1948, in addition to his disappointment in the decline of the Negro Leagues and Industrial League teams contrasted with his joy over the Negro Leagues now being recognized as part of the Major Leagues since 2020.

And Bob, Cam and Al look ahead to the Negro Leagues tribute set to take place at the historic Rickwood Field in June 2024!

ABL DUOs: Wonya Lucas and Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice

ABL DUOs: Wonya Lucas and Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice

Friendship and respect,  in a challenging academic setting, helped  mold two women into history making captains of industries.

Before Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice became President and Dean of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA she studied chemical engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.  That's where she met Wonya Lucas,  another chem-E student.

Both were young,  extremely bright African-American women who needed to escape  unpleasant college roommates.

They roomed with each other, graduated from GaTech and went on to become life long friends who broke barriers in important arenas.

Wonya  Lucas is President and Chief Executive Officer of Hallmark Media.  It's a position that suits her perfectly because, in addition to earning an engineering degree, she holds an MBA from Wharton and has more than 25 years of leadership experience in the broadcast cable industry.

This podcast shows the path each of these two women took to achieve their C Suite careers.

This episode is unique, though, because most of the half hour is spent allowing  Wonya and Dr. Rice  to interview each other.   There is laughter,  moments of sadness and a whole lot of truth telling because these are friends who have stood by each other for decades.  What they say about their lives and to each other has the potential to inspire everyone who hears this broadcast.

    Sermon: Why Not The Best?

    Sermon: Why Not The Best?

When God gave us Jesus, he gave us his best.  When Jesus gave us wine, or bread or Godly wisdom in a parable he gave us his best.

So, the question is are we giving God our best?

In a sermon from John chapter 2:1-11, Pastor Marben Bland takes us on a Biblical journey showing us the Godly traits for giving God our best.

Book of Joe: MLB Exec Billy Bean on MLB's Inclusivity Goals

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon welcoming MLB Executive Billy Bean to the show.  Billy talks about playing baseball while feeling like he needed to hide being gay because he wanted people to see him only as a player.  Billy has now turned his attention to having these important conversations with the league and teams about making the game more inclusive.  Tom asks how close the game is to having an active player be comfortable enough to be openly gay while in the majors. We have 'A Reading from the Book of Joe' where Billy picks page 44 for today's lesson.  Wrapping up, Joe and Tom give their best Christmas gifts they remember from their childhoods.

Team Deep Dive #4 - Milwaukee Brewers - Ep. 324

The Brewers have been around for more than 50 years but not always as the Brewers. We talk about the team's history, reason for being, its greatest players and most memorable seasons for this team which has unfortunately never brought a World Series win to its great fans.

It was Ben Ogilvie and Gorman Thomas combining for 73 home runs in 1982 - more than the entire Cardinal team that beat them in the World Series!

Ep. 73: Avila/Woodward Firings, Tatis' Spanking, Judge's Historic Push, Jeter Doc Recap, Best Duos this Season
