Hebrews 5 - Our High Priest gets us!

Hebrews 5 - Our High Priest gets us!

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered Hebrews 5:7-8

Jesus isn't a god that is aloof and looking down on us from on high. He isn't a High Priest wearing fine linens and robes that has all Hid needs and desires met. No, Jesus walked on earth. He got sick, saw disease and despair and wept! He asked His father to take the suffering He was going to experience and was told no. He had to walk the path that led to His torture and death. Jesus gets us!

Are you feeling lost, confused, desperate? Jesus understands. Are you angry and wanting to lash out? Jesus gets it. Do you feel unlovable and disserted? You aren't because Jesus understands and loves you! Join me in reading Hebrews 5 and be encouraged that Jesus gets us and He's here for you!

Hebrews 5 Bible Study | From The Lens of Grace

Hebrews 5 Bible Study | From The Lens of Grace

In our study today of Hebrews chapter 5 we're going to discover the true meaning of 'milk' and 'food' as it refers to this letter. Many have taught that this is about 'sin' and 'law', but today we will see this is about doctrine. There are some people teaching God's word, but as it turns out they are suggesting that we get right with God for some kind of human effort, and they need to go back to the basics of the gospel (milk). When our theology for dealing with sin starts talking about any outward effort, we have completely distorted the gospel of grace.

We're learning that nothing we do on the outside can save us. In the case of the Jews, it was animal sacrifices, washing, laying on of hands, etc. Today we see the same thing only with different techniques. Maybe they say the way God's forgiveness is activated is by asking God to forgive you over and over again, sin by sin, day by day.  Summer suggesting if you don't give a tithe then you will be punished instead of forgiven. If there's any type of human effort tied into our forgiveness, then that teacher needs to go back to milk.

Our outward performance is simply a picture of what has already happened inside. We should absolutely have good works and avoid sin. But those things don't get us more forgiveness or activate the forgiveness we've already been promised for the cross.

    Hebrews 5:1-4

    Hebrews 5:1-4

Wednesday evening, our meditation was in Luke, chapter 9

    Speculation was growing regarding Jesus
    – he was a spiritual leader, but what kind of leader?
    • 2,000 years later theologians and anthropologists are still asking
    • where did Jesus fit in his culture’s conceptual framework
    ◦ a prophet, a Rabbi, a sage, a healer, a mystic?
    – there is not one label that captures all that he is
    • even for believers: he is our Lord, Savior, Messiah
    ◦ Hebrews has already referred to him as
God’s Son, the pioneer of our salvation, and an apostle
    ◦ each is an attempt to get to at an important truth
    • the writer of Hebrew’s special interest is, Jesus our great high priest
