Celebration Time - Day 1 of my fifth year of alcohol free living

Celebration Time - Day 1 of my fifth year of alcohol free living

What I wanted was to change my desire…..I just wished I could desire less of it. I remember so desperately wanting to not want alcohol.

I was unhappy, exhausted, and uncomfortable with the direction my life was headed and my drinking was getting in the way of me making the changes I

I kept finding myself going to get that drink again, and again knowing how it was going to turn out.

I was frightened about so many things. Would I sleep at night, what would I do with my time, how would I keep friends, how would I relieve stress, how would I celebrate something amazing, who would console me when I was down.

What You’ll Learn from this Episode:

    • The most dangerous weapon we use against ourselves on our journey to exit the drinking life
    • How to use your past failures as a tool.
    • Why you have a choice in whether having a drink is a tool or a weapon.
    • How taking action from a place of frustration or obligation makes it more painful than it needs to be.
    • Why planning can be one of your most valuable tools.

Once we are down, we keep right on beating ourselves up when we are down. Then we drink even more.

    Necessary Darkness

    Necessary Darkness

In this episode, we'll dive deep into the idea of necessary darkness and crossing the river of misery. We're going to be uncomfortable on this journey of life and transforming our relationship with alcohol, no matter what we do.

We get to choose whether we want the discomfort of staying the same, or the discomfort of transformation.

What You’ll Learn from this Episode:

    • The one skill that we need to exit the drinking life.
    • Why drinking less is simple, but not easy.
    • How our thinking about the process gets us into trouble when things get difficult.
    • What the river of misery is and what's on the other side of it.
    • Why we need to choose between the misery of now and the misery of growth.

The poem referenced in the Episode

To love ourselves long-term is to attend a thousand funerals of the person we used to be. The person we are too exhausted to be any longer. The person we don’t recognize inside ourselves anymore. The person we grew out of. The person we never ended up growing into. We so badly want ourselves to get our spark back when it burns out, to become speedily found when we are lost. But it is not our job to hold ourselves accountable to the person we used to be. It’s our job to travel between each version and to honor what emerges along the way. Sometimes it will be an even more luminescent flame. Sometimes it will be a flicker that disappears and temporarily floods the room with a perfect and necessary darkness.

The 4 Desires Driving All Human Behavior

The 4 Desires Driving All Human Behavior

The most difficult and complicated part of exiting the drinking life is the decision to start.

During my 7 year struggle to drink less my thoughts about the process were all about relentless, unwavering willpower and deprivation.  Basically, a horrible, turbulent trip of resist, deny, resist, deny, cave, resist, deny, resist day after day, week after week and never feeling  happy about alcohol's role in my life.

It wasn't until I began to decided to go against the grain and explore how I was attempting to drink less did I make alcohol irrelevant in my life.

Understanding the way the brain is designed by default is key.

    Discussed in today's episode:

    The brain's natural programing to:

    • Seeking pleasure
    • Avoiding pain
    • Proving ourself right
    • Connecting with people

The skills to work around the brain's natural programing:

    • Delay gratification
    • Lean into discomfort
    • Be OK with trying new things
    • Be OK with going against the grain
