Hispanic Heritage with Justice Eva Guzman

On this episode of Keep It Legal, we had the opportunity to sit down with Justice Eva Guzman.

Listen as we dive into her impressive history both as a litigator and as a judge. Justice Guzman began her legal career in Houston, managing a successful civil law practice for a decade before accepting gubernatorial appointments, first to the Harris County District Court bench and then to the Texas 14th Court of Appeals.

She later became the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court of Texas and the first Latina to be elected to a statewide office in Texas. In more than 20 years on the bench, she ruled on thousands of trial and appellate cases and authored more than 900 opinions.

What's next for her? Listen to find out...

Designing for Hope and Social Impact | Jose Jordan, DLR Group

Designing for Hope and Social Impact | Jose Jordan, DLR Group

Jose Jordan leads interiors focused on justice and civic spaces at DLR Group in Florida. Justice and civic space interiors are often overlooked, but Jose believes they can be thoughtfully designed to empower and inspire. One example of this approach is a recent juvenile detention center project in Birmingham, Alabama where the history of steelwork was implemented to motivate residents toward a new potential.

Jose also offers up some career advice—care deeply and passionately about your work. This attracts others who also care, creating an environment where everyone works as a team for shared goals.

Jose recently rediscovered his Puerto Rican heritage on a trip to Old San Juan. The history, architecture, culture, food, and family connections left a deep impression. Now, during Hispanic Heritage Month, Jose enjoys spending time with family, eating traditional Puerto Rican food, and introducing others to the culture. He values bringing people together through food, music, and laughter and aims to create spaces that have the same welcoming community feel.

Domestic Violence & the Forgotten Minority- Continuing the Conversation with Maida Garcia

Domestic Violence & the Forgotten Minority- Continuing the Conversation with Maida Garcia

On this week's episode of Titillating Talks with Tiphany, I bring you in on an important conversation about minority women and domestic violence that I am having with my good friend, Maida Garcia.

Maida helps me to understand the issue of domestic violence and intimate partner abuse from the lens of the minority community. She explains that too many times when a woman of color reports a domestic abuse crime, her reports go ignored. Likewise, when a woman of color goes missing, her disappearance rarely makes the news. We discuss how cultural views & a lens of privilege often creates an environment where women of color are not seen as victims that need to be helped and supported.

October is both Domestic Violence Awareness Month & Hispanic Heritage Month. Now is the time to amplify voices of women of color and shine a light on the problem of domestic violence in their community.

The following organizations provide support to women of color:
Esperanza United- mobilizes Latinas &Latinx communities to end gender-based violence
National Domestic violence Hotline- Free, confidential help is only a phone call away 24/7
BELatina- News, entertainment, lifestyle for Latina's
Women of Color Network- Centralizes the voices, wellness, and leadership of women of color

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and to immerse yourself in the culture, Maida recommends these books:
    - Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
-Rain of Gold by Victor Villasenor
    - The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
-100 years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
    -Bless Me Ultima byRudolfo Anaya
    - Any book written by Isabelle Allende- there are too many good ones to list
    - Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sanchez
-Fat Chance Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado
-Of Women and Salt by Gabriela Garcia
-My Broken Language by Quiara Alegria Hudes
    - Colonize This by Daisy Hernandez

Fullest self with Odalys Jasmine (Hella Latin@ Podcast)

There’s something different about my guest this week. She practically glows with passion, vulnerability, and authenticity. She is changing the world with her beautiful story and we can’t wait to share it with you this week.

    In this episode, you’ll hear:

    1. About Odalys’ story, from childhood homelessness and adversity to becoming an entrepreneur and helping others find success.
    2. The similarities between her story and mine (Darryl’s), plus how our experiences have helped shape us.

    5. What (and who) prompted Odalys to find her authentic self.
    6. How you can do the same, from learning to talk to yourself to embracing the things that make up the unique and beautiful you.

    8. Why being vulnerable and authentic makes people respond to you, your story, and what you do.
    9. Why Odalys never leads with accomplishments on her podcast.
    10.  What she is doing (and getting ready to do!) to further her passion, goal, and community

Representing Hispanic Heritage through the Power of Food Writing

Representing Hispanic Heritage through the Power of Food Writing

After experiencing a “Ratatouille moment” while studying in Spain, the simple flavor explosion of an anchovy-stuffed olive changed Marisel Salazar’s life. Without a clear-cut path, she set out to become a food writer to tell the stories of the people behind the amazing dishes. More importantly, she dedicated herself to telling stories of undocumented workers in the restaurant scene. When Marisel unexpectedly got laid off from her full-time job, what felt like the scariest moment of her professional life ended up being the biggest blessing. She took the leap and started building her food writing career, one step at a time. After several years of putting herself out there in the publication world, things came full circle and she achieved top-tier status as the go-to Latina food writer in many lifestyle publications, including Insider, Martha Stewart Living and Tasting Table. In her conversation with Sarah, Marisel reminds entrepreneurs that success doesn’t happen overnight — it takes years of training and hard work to achieve a successful career in food writing.
