    Welcome back to Perko's Podcast!

Today is a very special edition of the podcast just in time for the holidays. Maybe you are already feeling stressed about the holiday season...maybe you feel tension with family members, anxiety about travelings, or pressure to get someone the perfect gift. But what would happen if we prioritized our soul during the holiday season and that allowed us to love others well? Today my good friend Duncan Banks took over the hosting mic to interview me about soul care during the holidays. I hope that this episode blessed you and those you come into contact with this season.

Can Your Holidays Be Magical and Difficult at the Same Time?
Today, as the holiday season is approaching, the psych guys discuss common difficulties they hear about during the holidays. They open up a conversation about how toxic positivity is part of the holiday season and how we can see holidays as both enjoyable and stressful at the same time.

It's Okay to Be Yourself - Important Reminders

It's Okay to Be Yourself - Important Reminders

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Important Reminders

This week I want to give you thoughts that you should be reminding yourself of on the regular for being on that journey to become your best self & live your life with as much ease as you can get.

These reminders will also be helpful during this super busy week of the year, leading us up to Christmas. This holiday can be stressful enough as it is, so there is no need to add in any extra introspective thoughts, but don't count next week out! These important reminders will also push you to take of yourself first more often than not.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • What better way to close out the week than to remind you that it’s perfectly okay to be yourself. In a world with so much chaos & uncertainty, one thing that is certain is that being yourself is important.
    • I have spoken about this topic before here on the podcast, but thought it would be a nice, quick reminder for today because it’s something so many of us struggle with due to fear of judgement, unspoken social expectations, external influences & thinking there is a right & wrong way to be.
    • But one of the main things you need to remember is that no one can control how others think & feel, so you just have to know & accept that fact & use that knowledge to push you to just be the best version of yourself you can be, based on your own rules, not anyone else’s.
    • The thing that is most crushing for me is that I worry how others are going to judge me, pick me apart & possibly disclude me from things based on what they think about what I’m doing. But something I am trying to work on is not letting fear dictate my life.
    • Being yourself is all about authenticity. As Brene Brown said, “Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be, and instead embracing who we are.”
    • Let me share with you a few tips on how you can work on being yourself, if it’s something you’re struggling with:
    • Tip #1: Accept Who You Are
    • Tip #2: Cut Out Negative Self Talk
    • Tip #3: Know that Other People’s Judgement is About Them, Not You

Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!

You Have to Believe In Yourself Before Anyone Else Does - Important Reminders

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

    Happy Thursday!

These important reminders will also push you to take of yourself first more often than not.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Listen, I feel like today’s episode really is just a reminder & not really even a lesson I can break down that much for you.
    • You genuinely have to believe in yourself before anyone else does because a lack of belief in yourself will hinder any possible success, no matter how many good goals & ideas you come up with. If you don’t believe that you can accomplish it, it will not happen.
    • You have to be the first one that believes in you & you have to be the one that hits it the most. You can’t rely on others to keep you up & motivated, it’s just not realistic or their responsibility.
    • Believing in yourself will help you to be more optimistic about the goals & plans you have for yourself. It will actually help you to take those steps forward to start that journey.
    • And think about the fact that if you don’t believe in yourself first, there is no reason for anyone else to believe in you either. Why would they want to if you can’t even muster enough courage to do so yourself?
    • And I know that there will be some people in your life, like family & close friends, that will believe in you despite what you are feeling, but even those encouragements can fade away if you don’t eventually get on board.
    • One of the best things that will come from starting to believe in yourself is feeling more positive, in general, about what you’re going after & what the outcome could be. There will probably be moments of failures woven into those experiences, but if you keep going, it will give you great learning lessons & the opportunity to try again but with more experience & knowledge.
    • Here are some quick tips on how to start believing in yourself:
    • Tip #1: Accept Where You Are Right Now
    • Tip #2: Reflect On Past Successes
    • Tip #3: Learn to Trust Yourself
    • Tip #4: Get A Mentor

These important reminders will also push you to take of yourself first more often than not.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • You don’t need to feel bad about how you are feeling & coping with whatever is going on in your life. Everyone has periods of their lives where things are hard & emotions will cling & drag you down.
    • I believe that part of the reason we all feel like not being ok is a bad thing is because there is societal pressure to keep it to ourselves, not drag anyone else down with us & don’t expose your emotions for fear of burdening someone else.
    • There is also the aspect of perfectionism & people pleasing that can cause people to pretend like everything is ok.
    • I think this is one of the most dangerous things to do because if you are dealing with really heavy things & don’t reach out for help & no one else knows, you could fall into a deep depression & convince yourself to do regrettable things.
    • There is an article on Psychology Today by Hannah Rose that talks about how we need to show up for every single emotion, no matter how painful, or we are destined to continually manifest those experiences in our lives until we deal with it. I believe this is absolutely true.
    • It’s also part of the reason we drag around our emotional baggage from relationship to relationship to season of life. We don’t take the time to properly deal with it.
    • I think we need to normalize that it’s ok to struggle & be unhappy & be sad & not smile.
    • Clinical therapist Jaime Zuckerman talks about the idea of “toxic positivity” & how that is related to the inability of normalizing feeling our true feelings.
    • It’s the idea that despite what we are going through, we should always try to force positive thoughts & vibes & have a positive mindset. By doing this, we end up invalidating our true feelings, making our emotional state worse because we are allowing the pain & hurt to get even deeper & validating that it isn’t ok to not be ok, which isn’t true.
    • I also want to mention that on the flip side, if someone you know is dealing with something tough, you shouldn’t just tell them it’s going to be ok. Instead or in addition to that, you should let them know it’s ok for them to feel the way they are feeling.
    • We all have thoughts & emotions & there is nothing wrong with that. It’s more about how we act on those thoughts & feelings.
    • Don’t be the person that just tells someone to “buck up” or “just get over it” because that doesn’t help anyone work through their pain & discomfort.

Kindness Is the Best Option - Important Reminders

Kindness Is the Best Option - Important Reminders

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Another important reminder that kindness is the best option. When you can make a conscious choice between being kind or not, you won’t ever regret choosing kindness.
    • Kindness is one of those things that we can easily take for granted or think won’t affect someone if we don’t offer it up.
    • I also think it’s one of those things that many people don’t want to engage in because it makes them feel weak or like a push over.
    • Kindness can also be the harder choice because it’s so darn easy to be mean to someone. Being mean & nasty can easily slither out of our bodies & take someone down. A lot of times you don’t even have to try because it’s a natural reaction.
    • Kindness is something that will improve our quality of life because it brings people together. Being nice to others can also cause us to feel good about ourselves & make that other person feel good, even if they don’t show that in the moment. You never know what happens behind closed doors.
    • And I understand that sometimes we fall into our reactions before we give ourselves a chance to choose to be kind & give grace, which is just being a normal person & no one is perfect. But just know you can switch your actions & feelings at any time & can always try again.
    • Kindness can be shown in so many ways, like opening the door for someone, giving a compliment, being kind but still firm in situations that call for it, giving someone grace when they make a mistake or mess-up.
    • The ultimate reason we should choose kindness is because you never know what someone else is going through. People lash out because of their own pain & not knowing how to deal with it.

It's Okay to Rest - Important Reminders

It's Okay to Rest - Important Reminders

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • This week I wanted to talk about reminders that we should all be telling ourselves & talk about something a little bit lighter, since it is Christmas week & some of us have enough stress to deal with, I didn’t want to take you on any emotional whirlwind.
    • Maybe next week, though!
    • I thought it would be helpful to start with talking about reminding ourselves that it is okay to rest when we need it.
    • I know this can be a really tough thing for a lot of people to admit to themselves, that rest is needed, but we need to get in the habit of doing so. There won’t always be someone there to remind you to do so, even if you do have that right now.
    • Today I want to share with you not only different ways you can implement rest into your life, but also reasons why you need to.
    • Let’s jump into 3 tips/reasons for rest:
    • Tip #1: The first reason we need to rest is that our brains need a break. Giving your brain a rest will help to improve general everyday performance, improve mood & increase your ability to concentrate & give attention to whatever it is you need to focus on. Idea for resting the brain: Unplug from as much as you can.
    • Tip #2: The second reason we need to rest is because our bodies can only take so much. According the the website, nectersleep in the UK, when our bodies do take some time to rest our cortisol levels are lower (which is our stress hormones), our sympathetic nervous system relaxes, which lowers our blood pressure & other hormones get to work that help to grow & repair things inside our bodies. Idea for resting the body: Sleep is the most obvious, but if that isn’t what you need, meditation works really well & for something that lets you still move your body but minimally, yoga or general stretching.
    • Tip #3: The third & final reason we need to rest is because burnout is a real thing. Burnout is the mental, emotional & physical exhaustion created from prolonged stress  from being overwhelmed, feeling unable to perform under pressure & just emotional drained. It’s the idea of not stopping, despite feeling the stress overflow. Idea for resting due to burnout: Delegate & be firm about your needs.

You're Too Focused On the Negative - Why You're Not Motivated

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

And there will be times when motivation is not what we need to lean on, as we all have to do hard things during hard times just because. But learning how to reignite your own personal motivation to get it done or get it started can be so helpful.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • This really comes down to letting fear consume you & not allow you to go after your dreams & aspirations.
    • Spending so much time focusing on what negative things could happen or what has happened in the past will not get you anywhere. How do you expect to accomplish anything by allowing all the uncertainty in the world overcome any confidence or decisions you have to move forward?
    • Fear can come in all shapes & sizes. So whether you are dealing with fear of failure, fear of success or fear of change, it can all be managed so that it doesn’t get in your way or crush any motivation you have to stay on your journey.
    • Anytime there is going to be a change in your life that can be fear lingering beneath the surface because we aren’t sure how things are going to turn out & insecurities start to float to the surface.
    • Today I want to share with you some ways to manage fear so that it doesn't hinder any plans or deter you from future possibilities & opportunities.
    • Tip #1: Imagine the Worst, Then Plan for It
    • Tip #2: Be Realistic About Your Fears
    • Tip #3: Perfectionism Sucks.
    • Tip #4: Get Another Opinion
    • Tip #5: Face Your Fears. Chase the fear away.

You Reward Yourself Too Often - Why You're Not Motivated

You Reward Yourself Too Often - Why You're Not Motivated

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Why You're Not Motivated

This week I want to give you tips on restoring some of the reasons why you are lacking motivation. This will range from not knowing what you want in life to avoiding doing anything because of possible negative outcomes.

We all lack motivation at some point in our lives, but sometimes it can be everlasting. And there will be times when motivation is not what we need to lean on, as we all have to do hard things during hard times just because. But learning how to reignite your own personal motivation to get it done or get it started can be so helpful.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • So I totally get why you would create rewards & prizes for yourself to help boost motivation when going after goals & dreams, but sometimes it can get a little out of control.
    • And one of the reasons that people use rewards for getting stuff done is because it creates in the brain a link between pleasure & accomplishments. But I believe there can be a burnout experience in that if we aren’t careful.
    • Plus there is also the issue with spending extra money that we don’t necessarily have. And some many argue that rewards don’t have to cost money, but I feel like ‘free’ rewards will only carry you so far & you’re still stuck in the end.
    • I feel like 2 of the biggest problems are that you end up spending money on rewards that might push you into an uncomfortable financial place at some point because you are so driven to come up with awesome things that will push you to keep going or you can afford it & do a mix of free things & paid items, but you either run out of ideas, it becomes boring or the thing you are working towards becomes so hard that no reward is really pushing you to keep going.
    • Now something I don’t think I made clear at the beginning is that I am speaking about CONSTANT rewards, not ones that are sprinkled in here & there.
    • So today I’m not really going to give you a traditional list, like I normally do, but I am going to leave you with some advice on how to use rewards for motivation in the ways I think will assist you best in your goals.
    • First, try to start out with no rewards. The beginning of any journey should be exciting on it’s own, so rewards shouldn’t be needed yet.
    • Next, don’t use rewards constantly. If you get to a stage in your goal accomplishing where you need to start adding in rewards to spice it up a bit, do every few milestones, not every single one.
    • Lastly, accept that giving yourself rewards isn’t going to always work & discipline is the key to accomplishing most things.

You're Relying On Willpower - Why You're Not Motivated

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

    Happy Tuesday!

But learning how to reignite your own personal motivation to get it done or get it started can be so helpful.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • A lot of people like to rely on willpower to help them not do something or to keep doing something & couple that with motivation.
    • But honestly willpower isn’t something you should rely on because it’s not reliable & it easily fades. I believe it could be helpful in addition to discipline, but for sure not alone.
    • I feel like willpower is comparable to a caffeine rush or something else that is temporary & waning in the moment you need it most.
    • I want to share with you some reasons why willpower is not it.
    • Willpower is easily over estimated.
    • Your self-control isn’t always in control.
    • Self-defeating thoughts easily crush willpower.
    • Today I want to share with you some alternatives to willpower that will work better:
    • Alternative #1: Build Better Habits.
    • Alternative #2: Letting Go of Perfection.
    • Alternative #3: Accept Mistakes & Move Forward. Self Compassion.
    • Alternative #4: Be Grateful For Willpower When It Comes

You Don't Know What You Want - Why You're Not Motivated

You Don't Know What You Want - Why You're Not Motivated

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • Sometimes this doesn’t seem like a big deal because you believe you will figure it out at some point, but it can definitely be something that can affect your motivation.
    • But one of the reasons you may be struggling to have motivation is because you don’t know what you want & if you don’t know what you want, you can’t really be motivated to do anything because there is no clear path or plan for you to follow or use.
    • It’s for sure a combo of not knowing & not having a plan. Because you can know what you want, but if you don’t have a plan to achieve it, you’re still at a loss.
    • But I have found that if you know what you want & have fashioned a plan of attack, motivation will flow a bit easier.
    • And I understand that it can be hard to figure out what you want or the path to take to get there, but that is what I’m going to share with you today.
    • Today I am going to share with you a few tips on how to get closer to figuring out what you want in life.
    • Tip #1: Get to Know Yourself Better
    • Tip #2: Get Rid of Distractions
    • Tip #3: Try Things Out for a Month
    • Tip #4: Create Some Goals to Accomplish
    • Tip #5: Seek the Wisdom of Others That Have Struggled Also

Stop Waiting & Start Doing - Self Growth Tips

Stop Waiting & Start Doing - Self Growth Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Self Growth Tips

This week I am going to be chatting about some things we all can spend time working on that would attribute to our self growth.

Things like learning to be happy for others & nurturing relationships may seem like boring topics or things we don't really need to work on, but these things will really make a difference & help you strengthen your foundation for becoming your best self.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • What better way to round out the week than to encourage you to stop waiting for the perfect time to start something & just go for it.
    • This is one of the best self growth tips I could ever give you because it opens the door to so many possibilities & opportunities.
    • I was & still am sometimes, that person that will wait & procrastinate because I want everything to be perfect for me to go out on a limb & try to do something new, different & exciting. But that is really just you making an acceptable excuse & wasting your time.
    • It’s important to realize that by putting all that pressure on yourself to be in the best place you possibly could before you jump into something could cause you to lose out on great opportunities, take time away from enjoying the actual end result or become so overly prepared that you want to back out or become too overwhelmed with the idea of following through.
    • Now I can admit that there are certain things that MAY benefit from waiting till you are 1,000% ready & feel prepared, but even in those cases, spontaneity can still result in a positive outcome. Examples: having a child, moving to a new place or getting married.
    • But I do think that people that struggle with perfectionism & even people that don’t can become obsessed with making sure everything is happening in the “right time” for them. And the question I have for you is, “How will you know if it’s the right time?”
    • I’m sure so many people thought that 2020 was going to be the right time for so many things, but turns out that the world had different plans.
    • So today I want to give you some tips on how to stop waiting for the perfect moment & just get started with whatever it is you’ve been putting off.
    • Tip #1: Ask yourself if you’re using the ‘right time’ excuse in place of confronting any fears about the situation.
    • Tip #2: Practice being more present in the moment & enjoying now.
    • Tip #3: Understand there is no ‘right time’ because tomorrow isn’t promised.
    • Tip #4: Prepare for small twists & turns to happen, but keep moving forward.

Nuture Your Relationships - Self Growth Tips

Nuture Your Relationships - Self Growth Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • I think that taking the time to nurture your relationships is important self growth because it takes time, patience & dedication to stay connected to the people in your life. And it can be very easy to get so overwhelmed & consumed with what is going on in our own lives & the struggles we are personally dealing with.
    • Even doing something as small as calling or texting someone on the regular will help to better those relationships & show that you care for the people in your life.
    • Taking the time to check in on others is something so super simple, but can for sure be something we take for granted or think won’t be missed.
    • This is especially true for people that deal with anxiety & find it hard to communicate with others.
    • But making the time to connect with others will really help your relationships stay intact & continue to grow. The proof in this are those relationships that you can not talk for many months & then be able to easily pick back up again because you spent the time nurturing it previously & still have mini check-ins here & there.
    • And relationships are super important because no one wants to do life alone. It’s nice to have people around to celebrate your wins & help you through your struggles. It can also be a learning opportunity because as I have mentioned before, everyone is different & can benefit from the others’ knowledge & experiences.
    • Bonding with others, sharing life with others & having someone that’s got your back is a great feeling & something to be super grateful for.
    • But today I want to share with you some tips on how to nurture both friendships & romantic relationships.
    • TIp #1: Embrace Vulnerability
    • Tip #2: Be A Regular
    • Tip #3: Be Open to Feedback
    • Tip #4: Build Trust
    • Tip #5: Set & Respect Boundaries

Be Yourself & Not What the World Wants - Self Growth Tips

Be Yourself & Not What the World Wants - Self Growth Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

    • I knew I had to include this in my list of self growth episodes because it’s something that so many people struggle with, including myself.
    • It’s also super easy to become what everyone around you wants & needs & not serve yourself at all. You don’t want to wake up one day & not know who you are.
    • The biggest point I want to make about being yourself is that God made you a certain way & by you not indulging in that & trying to auto-correct it somehow by shadowing someone else, you are not only disrespecting God but yourself, too.
    • And one of the biggest reasons you may struggle with this is because you are a people pleaser & lack self-love. You have the desire to be loved & think the best way to obtain that is to getting by making others happy.
    • But the thing that really shakes me out of this mindset the best is thinking about how the people we are trying to please aren’t out here pretending (as far as we know) & they are just being themselves. And yet, we are doing everything to hide who we are & morph into something for someone else to get that same kind of love & acceptance.
    • But why didn’t we just use them as an example of what to do & be to get that love? We are taking the hard way around on this.
    • And why must we have the mindset that we need to be what someone else wants when we were all created to be someone special & an individual in our own right. We were all made to be different because being the same isn’t helpful to on another & I’m sure it would be boring.
    • So today I want to give you 5 tips on how to be more yourself & stop giving into what the world wants you to be.
    • Tip #1: Acknowledge the Fears You Have About Being Yourself
    • Tip #2: Stop With the Negative Self Talk
    • Tip #3: Celebrate Your Strengths & What Makes You Different
    • Tip #4: Practice Vulnerability
    • Tip #5: Know You Can’t Please Everyone

Forgive & Let It Go - Self Growth Tips

Forgive & Let It Go - Self Growth Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Forgiveness is tough. Letting things go is tough, too. It’s because we don’t want people to think we are just forgetting what happened & it’s ok to walk all over us. At least that’s the strong feelings I get everytime I have to forgive someone.
    • But forgiveness is not about forgetting or letting anything go as unimportant or as if it didn’t happen. It’s the act of letting go of the anger & pain that is associated with whatever happened & moving forward without dragging that luggage along with you.
    • It’s also the act of letting go of resentment & any thoughts you may have had of retaliating against the other person. And it’s to benefit you, not the other person, who may not change their ways, and that’s something you have to be willing to accept.
    • And just know that if you struggle with forgiving others, know that’s ok. It’s not an easy thing, even if someone else makes it seem super simple.
    • But I also mention that the act of forgiveness can lead you to you understanding more about why the person did what they did, if you take that route. It’s not an easy one to go, but it could really help with your own process of forgiveness & letting it go.
    • And before we get into the tips portion of this episode, let me share with you some benefits of forgiveness: better mental health, less stress/anxiety/hostilty, & healthier relationships.
    • Today I want to share with you 5 thoughts on forgiveness, how to do it & why it’s important.
    • Thought #1: Holding grudges sucks. (you drag that bitterness luggage around, you live in the past & don’t enjoy the future & damage relationships)
    • Thought #2: Stop Being a Victim. (Don’t let the offender’s actions have control over you)
    • Thought #3: Practice Empathy. (Try to understand why they did it & if you can make sense of the mistake or their shortcomings)
    • Thought #4: Work Through Your Emotions. (this takes time)
    • Thought #5: Truly Let It Go (this will look like accepting what happened but not denying it occurred, focusing on the present & not letting the past rule your life & the willingness to move forward)

Learn to be Happy for Others - Self Growth Tips

Learn to be Happy for Others - Self Growth Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • For sure learning to be happy for others is a MAJOR piece of self growth, especially when you are miserable with everything going on around you & in your life.
    • Learning to be happy for others is one of those things that will give you a stronger mindset & free you from indulging in your insecurities as much as you would feeling envious & spiteful.
    • But we can all admit that when things are going great for us, it’s so much easier to celebrate what’s going on for those around us, because we are already happy. But when we are having a hard time in our lives, we don’t want to be happy for others because we may feel it’s unfair, it’s hard to see past our own negative feelings or it just points out how well someone else is doing & how much we aren’t. It can also be against what we think we should do, if competing to have the best life is something we are always gunning for.
    • But I’m here to tell you that it is possible to be happy for someone else while also navigating whatever tough situations you may be going through.
    • And something that will really help with this is changing your perspective of how to feel & what celebrating someone else’s wins can teach you. Because wouldn’t you want someone else to still celebrate with you when you are doing well, despite what’s going on in their life?
    • Today I’m going to share with you 5 tips on how to be happy for others, even when you are struggling to be happy with yourself.
    • Tip #1: See Their Wins as an Inspiration
    • Tip #2: Practice Being Mindful. (Be in the present, don’t dwell on the past & leave the future to when it needs to be addressed.)
    • Tip #3: Change the Way You Speak to Yourself
    • Tip #4: Stop Comparing Yourself to Someone Else’s Season
    • Tip #5: Accept Your Feelings & Move Forward with a Plan of Action
