    Hidden Gems at the Mid-Major Level — HPP S3-E31

    Continuing the “Hidden Gems” series, Rich Harris talks with Dayton wing Koby Brea, Appalachian State forward Tre’von Spillers, and Nevada forward Nick Davidson.  All three are All-Conference candidates and will very likely be competitors in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.   

    Playing for the 21st ranked Dayton Flyers, Brea is one of the top shooters in the country.  He leads all DI players with a 3-point percentage of 48.7, and also ranks second in the nation for TS% (70.2).  Sporting the third best plus-minus rating in the Atlantic 10 (7.5), he is averaging 10.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 86 percent from the free-throw line. 

    Spillers ranks 12th in the nation with a FG% of 63.2 and is a POY candidate in the Sun Belt Conference.  He ranks in the top 10 of the Sun Belt for FG%, RPG (8.4), BPG (1.4), offensive rating (131.8*), defensive rating (92.8), PER (25.9), win shares (4.5*), and plus-minus (5.2).  The Mountaineers are 26-5 on the season and are currently leading the Sun Belt by one game over James Madison.

    Davidson has helped lead the Nevada Wolfpack to a 23-6 record this season.  After starting just once as a freshman, he has been in the starting lineup for all 29 games so far this season, averaging 12.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and a combined 1.4 steals and blocks per game.  The 6-foot-9 forward currently ranks in the top 10 of the MWC for a TS% (63.2), FT% (75.7), REB% (15.5), offensive rating (128.1), defensive rating (97.8), PER (22.3), win shares (4.3), and plus-minus (4.2).

    Rich Harris and Jake Copestick talk with a trio of hidden gems, Xavier’s Quincy Olivari, Utah State’s Great Osobor, and Northern Colorado’s Saint Thomas, who are near the top of their respective conferences in scoring plus a number of other categories.  All three are also Player of the Year candidates in their respective conferences. 

    Olivari is a two-time All-CUSA selection who currently ranks second in the Big East in scoring with 19.1 PPG.  Quincy also currently ranks in the top 10 of the Big East for SPG (1.4), plus-minus (10.0), FT% (82.4), and 3P% (44.3 — 5th in the nation). 

    Osobor leads the MWC in RPG (9.1), and he ranks in the top 10 of the conference for PPG (17.8), BPG (1.4), FG% (58.4), defensive rating (95.8), PER (25.6), win shares (4.6), and plus-minus (8.2).

    Thomas ranks in the top 10 of the Big Sky for numerous categories, including PPG (19.8), RPG (9.8), APG (3.7), SPG (1.7), BPG (0.93), FG% (46.7), FT% (86.4), PER (26.6), WS (4.5), and P/M (5.8).

    In this special episode, Richard Harris sits down with a trio of DI stars: USF’s Jonathan Mogbo, Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard, and Clemson’s PJ Hall.  All three currently play for teams in the mix for a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and each player is in the running for postseason awards.

    Mogbo, a POY candidate in the WCC, leads the country in FG% (67.3) and PER (34.1).  He ranks in the top 10 of DI for dunks (75, tied for 2nd with Zach Edey), win shares (2nd, 5.9), plus-minus (6th, 12.4), RPG (9th, 10.5), and REB% (3rd, 23.0).  Additionally, in the WCC, he ranks in the top 10 for PPG (15.4), SPG (1.8, 1st), AST% (23.3), STL% (3.6, 1st), and BLK% (4.0). 

    Hubbard, a top-100 recruit who is in the running for Freshman of the Year in the SEC, currently ranks second in the conference for 3-point percentage.  He is playing nearly 25 minutes per game and is averaging 14.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.  On the season, he is shooting 36 percent from deep and 82 percent from the FT line, and for points per possession, he ranks above the above 75th percentile on jumpers off the dribble, spot-ups, pick-and-rolls, and handoffs. 

    Hall is not only a POY candidate in the ACC but also a Wooden Award late-season finalist.  He ranks in the top 10 of the ACC for PPG (19.5), RPG (7.2), BPG (1.7), and EFG% (54.7), PER (28.9), win shares (4.1), and plus-minus (10.5).  He ranks above the 81st percentile for points per possession on the following play types:  post-ups, cuts, transition, and putbacks, and he also ranks at the 60th percentile as a jump shooter.

    The HPP gang returns after the Thanksgiving break and opens up a new chapter in the College Hoops Notebook, which includes analysis of the impact of a healthy Bronny James and various roster updates.  Drew Barton, Rich Harris, and Caleb Slaton also present the latest Draft Stock Report and make their Picks of the Week.  Plus, Rutgers’ star big man Cliff Omoruyi joins the show to discuss his game and the Scarlet Knights. 

    Last season, Omoruyi was an All-Big Ten selection and a Big Ten All-Defense selection, averaging 13.2 PPG and ranking in the top 3 of the conference for RPG (9.6), BPG (2.1), and defensive rating (88.6).  Cliff also ranked 6th in the country with 75 dunks.  Named to the 2023-24 Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch List, he is currently averaging 11.0 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks per game.

    Rich Harris and Pete Howarth analyze and preview the Big East Conference with Creighton’s Baylor Scheierman.  Also, the Preseason CAA Player of the Year, Drexel center Amari Williams, joins the show to talk about his game and team. 

    Last season, Baylor, the 2021-22 Summit Player of the Year, helped the Bluejays get to the Elite Eight.  He is in his fifth season, his second at Creighton.  For his career, he’s averaged 12.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 47% from the floor, 40% from the deep, and 80% from the free-throw line.

    Amari is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year in the Coastal Athletic Association.  Last season as a junior, he averaged 13.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.2 blocks per game, while leading the CAA in FG% (52.3), REB% (19.3), BLK% (8.3), defensive rating (84.0 — 1st in the country), PER (28.5 — 15th in DI), and P/M (8.0).

    Rich Harris and Caleb Slaton preview the Big 12 Conference with BYU forward Fousseyni Traore.  Fousseyni was a 2023 All-WCC selection and a 2023 WCC All-Academic selection.  As a sophomore last season, he averaged 12.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 61 percent from the floor.  He ranked in the top 5 of the WCC for RPG, FG%, EFG%, BLK%, and defensive rating.

    Rich Harris and Caleb Slaten preview the Atlantic Coast Conference with Florida State forward Baba Miller and Georgia Tech guard Miles Kelly. 

    Baba became a part of the Real Madrid system at the age of 12, and as a freshman last season with FSU, he was an All-ACC Academic selection.  This past summer, the 6-foot-11 Miller won a gold medal while playing for the Spanish national team in the FIBA U19 World Cup. 

    As a sophomore last season, Miles led the Yellow Jackets in scoring at 14.4 PPG.  He also averaged 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.  He ranked fourth in the ACC with 89 3-pointers made and ranked fifth in the conference with a 3-point percentage of 37.9.

    Rich Harris and Caleb Slaton preview the Big Ten Conference with Illinois forward Coleman Hawkins and Ohio State wing Jamison Battle.

    Last season, Coleman led the Illini in MPG, RPG, and APG, averaging 9.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game, while shooting 44 percent from the floor.  Following the season, he was invited to the NBA Combine, but he ultimately decided to return for his senior season. 

    Before joining Ohio State, Jamison played two years at George Washington and then two years at Minnesota, and over that span, he was All-Rookie selection in 2020, All-A10 selection in 2021, All-Big Ten Honorable Mention in 2022, and All-Big Ten Academic selection in 2023.  He has averaged at least 12 PPG in each of his four collegiate seasons, averaging 14.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for his career.
