BTW 83: Queen of Cups' School of Art, with guest Diana Rivera

In the Queen of Cups tarot card, we see a Queen gazing intently into a lidded golden goblet. By the power of their attention and care, whatever is in the goblet is infused with magic. Like the sea itself, the essence of the suit of Cups is to ebb and flow. This Queen teaches us to pay attention to our cycles and rhythms. When this card comes up in a reading, something mysterious is rising up from the well of creativity inside you, called to new life. Our guest today, creativity expert Dr. Diana Rivera is here to help us take our creative powers seriously and bring our creative babes into being.

Sandy Litchfield: The Pastoral & Future Fiction

Sandy Litchfield: The Pastoral & Future Fiction

Episode 2 with Sandy Litchfield, a painter, public artist and Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Department of Architecture. Sandy has been recognized with numerous grants and commissions for public art. She has exhibited in numerous museums including the Decordova Museum and Sculpture Park, the Fitchburg Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum and the Hunterdon Museum. Her work focuses on landscape as a construct for understanding place and notions of belonging. It’s a conversation about what roots us and the places that give us a sense of belonging, and the ways in which that can inform our work and the trajectory of what we create. It’s also a conversation about creating fictional future places where we want to be, that feel in our control and expressing what we wish for in the landscapes that we inhabit.  We cover lots of ground in this conversation. Please enjoy! Subscribe, rate and review us so others can find these conversations too.

Pretty Sure you're in for a Drag Queen extravaganza

Pretty Sure you're in for a Drag Queen extravaganza

Ever wondered what life is like as a Drag Queen?!

This week, I talked to Miss Anita Tension (if read properly, sounds like "I need attention" and pun fully intended by her) about what it takes to transform herself into a Drag Queen, and let's just say it got very juicy! We had a blast, and even cried-laughed at some point at one of her stories involving eyebrows (or the lack thereof). We also talked about sexuality, feeling beautiful, confident and included some tips from the makeup queen herself. I hope you enjoy hearing this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it and it too brings you happy tears.

Creative confidence - Commercial Artist Murugiah

Creative confidence - Commercial Artist Murugiah

After spending seven years studying architecture, Sharm Murugiah realised he didn’t want to be an architect. He wanted to be an artist instead. And so, six months out of university, his freelance journey began.

Since then, Murugiah’s worked with high-profile brands such as Wired, Vans and Adobe. From learning to manage clients, to finding the best places to share his work online, to booking projects through agents and then taking back control, Murugiah says there’s a lot he’s done over the past nine years that he wouldn’t do again.

But, through all of that trial and error, he’s finally found confidence in his own creative style. Listen to him chat to Steve about how he got there.

'Make Your Best Work by Setting Intention' with ØFFËRÎNGŠ (Missy Gilbert) (Artist, HyperReel

How do you get out of your own way and make your best work? Artist Missy Gilbert AKA ØFFËRÎNGŠ says its by focusing on WHO the work is for. By dedicating it and setting intention for the work, it allows you to get out of your own way and channel your greatest level of focus to maximise your creative output.

Missy is an artist, though she has only just started to call herself that - after 21 years working as a freelance creative. I wanted to talk to Missy about why it's so hard to claim that title - especially given she is one of the most successful creatives I know working across events (the immersive dining behemoth 'Hyper Real' in conjunction with Chin Chin Restaurant), Performance Art (QVB After Dark, Sydney) and she even runs a 2000 square meter artists space, The Nest Creative Space in Alexandria, Sydney!

Missy shares much wisdom and magic - enjoy!

High End Art: Everything You NEVER Wanted To Know

High End Art: Everything You NEVER Wanted To Know
Richard Prince recently stirred up the photography/Instagram world when he controversially modified Instagram photographs as his latest work and sold them for upward of $90k a piece. Does this blow your mind? Possibly make you angry? Well get ready. In this video I’m going to give an overview of how the high-end art market works. The art market has become very attractive to investors in recent years for a variety of reasons. According to Bloomberg, this has snowballed into a global $54 Billion industry. Who are the artists? Who are the investors? How does this work? These are some of the questions I will try to answer in this video. The art market is rarely discussed in the media unless there is a lawsuit. I think that’s why its important to have this conversation. When it comes to huge money, very few of us understand how art as a business actually works.

    What About Fine Art?

    What About Fine Art?
As a followup to last week’s topic of making a career in commercial photography – this week I’ve been asked the obvious next question. What about fine art as a career for photography? This is a tough question to answer as its not unlike coming up with a strategy to be a rock star. Its near impossible if you don’t have the talent and the stomach to work for a long time. In this video I will explain.
