    Magnus Atom

    Magnus Atom

With a name like Magnus Atom, I had a feeling I was going to be talking with someone extraordinary. This award-winning motion graphics designer and commercial artist has an impressive roster of clients, including Headspace, Viceland, Playboy, MTV, and Lil Uzi Vert. On top of that, he recently received a coveted Young Guns award! Very impressive!

I caught up with Magnus a few months after his win, and he talked about working as an animation director with Strange Beast and settling down in upstate New York after a recent stint in Miami. He also spoke about going to the "Fame" high school in NYC, how his father inspired him to be an artist, and what he's got his sights set on for this year. With a name like Magnus Atom, I've got a feeling we'll definitely hear more from him in the future!

Creative confidence - Commercial Artist Murugiah

Creative confidence - Commercial Artist Murugiah

After spending seven years studying architecture, Sharm Murugiah realised he didn’t want to be an architect. He wanted to be an artist instead. And so, six months out of university, his freelance journey began.

Since then, Murugiah’s worked with high-profile brands such as Wired, Vans and Adobe. From learning to manage clients, to finding the best places to share his work online, to booking projects through agents and then taking back control, Murugiah says there’s a lot he’s done over the past nine years that he wouldn’t do again.

But, through all of that trial and error, he’s finally found confidence in his own creative style. Listen to him chat to Steve about how he got there.

#13 - Interview with an Artist - Managing Director/President (Oil Industry) - Pat Munro

#13 - Interview with an Artist - Managing Director/President (Oil Industry) - Pat Munro

“I expected too much after doing 2 years of fine art, I expected to be earning well quickly.”

“It’s hard to earn enough money from art, unless you are extremely famous.”

“An artist who has to earn their living from painting has to be far more productive, they have to put in the hours and churn out paintings.”

Pat Munro joins us on the podcast for a look at what a day in the life of an artist as well as a Managing Director is like.

Pat studied fine art for 2 years with the goal of becoming a commercial artist. In order to earn more, he instead entered into the engineering field with his first job starting at a metallurgical laboratory at the Ford motor company in PE. After working at Armstrong Hydraulics he joined an American company in the oil industry where he progressed to the position of Managing Director/President of South African operations.

After a 42 year period from 1965 to 2007 Pat returned to art, creating 45 paintings that went on exhibition in 2012. Now in retirement, Pat is a successful artist who believes that each of his two careers have taken place at the right times in his life. We take a look at what happened.
