#38 - Karista Paredes: How to Recognize an Abusive Relationship and Take Action

Karista Paredes is a soon-to-be published author, full-time Kids Pastor, and a community leader. She is an exemplar of how vulnerability can lead to breakthrough.

Oftentimes on this podcast we talk about the importance of relationships. What we rarely touch on is what happens when relationships go wrong. Typically, we want to hide all of our relational problems, stow them away and pretend that everything is copacetic. But doing this will hurt us, our family, and prevent us from healing.

In this episode, you can expect to hear:

    • what to do when a relationship turns abusive
    • why people stay in abusive relationships
    • indicators that you should watch out for
    • the psychology behind why people return to toxic relationships
    • how to let others into your life to help you assess your situation
    • how to make a strategy of leaving an abusive relationship
    • why sharing your story gives you and others power
    • the key to preserving your self-worth
    • and the one piece of advice Karista would give her younger self.

THANK YOU for being here. Thanks again to Karista for sharing her story. Remember, life is better when we talk to people and live socially connected. Don't give up on finding your people, and don't give up on living abusive relationships.

#37 - Emily Farley: Leading with Empathy, the Power of Thoughtful Communication

Emily Farley is a professional with 16 years of experience in the public health sector. She currently serves as the Director of Community Engagement at the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center. Her knack lies in fostering genuine connections and effective communication.

Emily was perfect for the podcast because of her ability to tell stories that connected people together. I believe that stories are a super power, and if you know how to properly tell a story, then you can create community, connection, and wonder.

In this episode, you can expect to hear:

    • how to ask questions with empathy
    • how to create an environment where people feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable
    • the art of graciously presenting other peoples' stories
    • how to navigate work and personal identity (& if they should even be separate)
    • why leadership can feel burdensome and how to respond
    • methods to make you a better listener (and care more about people)
    • and what book we would write if we had the chance

She is an alumna of the Leadership Lawrence class of 2019 and an active member of the 2023 class of Kansas Emerging Leaders. When not driving her professional pursuits, Emily embraces the busyness of life with her two children, two beagles, and her supportive husband.

Think about a great story someone recently told you. Bottle it up, and then challenge yourself to share it to someone else and pass it on.

#36 - Jeremy Newman: Creating an Adventurous Life (One Conversation at a Time)

Jeremy Newman is an educator, business owner, pilot, endurance athlete, and adventurer. He grew up in North Dakota, traveled the world, and found his way to Kansas.

Growing up in a foster home, Jeremy learned how to make deep connections in a loving yet ever-changing family. This episode was really important to me because I believe that most of our social confidence starts in our family. When we're young, we get to see how our parents treat each other, we learn how to make friends with siblings, and we interact with all different types of personalities at family events.

Being a part of the foster system could be a setback for some, but it made Jeremy more attuned to the importance of connection.

In this episode you can expect to hear about:

    • Jeremy's adoption story
    • how he decided to move across the world
    • what inspired him to become a teacher
    • how to create adventure in your own backyard
    • why language limits our world
    • one way to become more confident in class
    • and what I think the podcast adventure has been like so far.

Family is a gift. I'm grateful that Jeremy shared his story and I hope it inspired you to reflect on your's.

#35 - Annie Miller: The Importance of Connection in Your Relationship

Annie Miller is a former Irish dancer, an avid long-distance runner, and my wife.

Without Annie, this podcast would be a fraction of what it is. The whole 70 minutes of this podcast contain me laughing at Annie, us sharing stories, and then her weighing in on different questions that were sent in.

Some of the things you can expect to hear in this episode are:

    • how to communicate expectations in relationships
    • how to keep relationships feeling romantic and alive
    • the day Annie and I met
    • all the details about our secret proposal
    • how to navigate being away from your spouse
    • how to communicate future plans with your spouse
    • one trick you can use to ensure you're being yourself
    • and why I would be the front door if I were in the Beauty and the Beast.

Thanks so much for everyone who sent questions in! That was a super cool touch and I'm going to do it again in the future!

How to Connect and Build Trust by Using Ethics - With Yonason Goldson

How to Connect and Build Trust by Using Ethics - With Yonason Goldson

Eric and I have the opportunity to speak with a rabbi who is now helping businesses to build trust with their teams and customers. How to Connect and Build Trust by Using Ethics - With Yonason Goldson we discuss the value of ethics and purpose in business. Success in business is ultimately about relationships and trust.

Businesses sometimes lose sight of the simple things like doing the right things for their clients. Earning people's trust will help turn your clients into salespeople for your company.

On the other hand there are companies that will pit employees and managers against each other in a survival of the fittest culture. These types of cultures are not sustainable. Yet other companies that build on trust and culture, not only do well, the message of culture travels and people want to do business with thoose cultures.

We also touch on the fact that sometimes we have to keep our beliefs to ourselves in order for these same people to at least listen to a message that may help them.  This conversation is one that we could continue for some time.

People Buy From People - with Brian Sexton

Brian comes from a small West Virginian town raised by great parents with values. His father was in sales for many years and Brian  honors his father with some of the great lessons he learned from him over the years.

We had an interesting chat about the way a bug zapper can be an analogy for salespeople. Where else would you get that comparison?

Also, selling with profit and knowing when to walk away. Some deals and opportunities are just not worth it as they can become energy drains.

Brian is a great human being who genuinely cares about others. That is a big reason for his success.
