    Hurricanes

    Hurricanes

Last week, Hurricane Isaias brushed past the Lowcountry but left a mess in the Grand Strand. And while it didn't prompt evacuations or major panic, Isaias was a clear reminder of the kind of storm season that's been brewing in the Atlantic Ocean.
It was the earliest "I" storm on record, meaning eight other named storms had already formed before it this year. During a typical year, named storms would only be on the letter "B" by early August.

The Aug. 3 storm also made 2020 the sixth straight year that a tropical storm has affected the Palmetto State's coast.

It traced a similar path to a couple close calls for the Charleston area in recent years: Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Dorian last year.

Senior projects reporter Tony Bartelme and reporter Chloe Johnson, who writes about the coastal environment and climate change, were able to offer some insight on what could be ahead in the months of hurricane season that are still yet to come.

We also talked about how the pandemic could play into evacuation plans if South Carolina ends up in the potential path of a larger storm this year — and what we should be considering now so that we're prepared.

    Listen now to find out.

    Confused Shrimp

    Confused Shrimp

"I think the shrimp are confused just as much as the people are." Melvin Dunn is a shrimper from North River– a small, coastal community in Carteret County, NC. His father was a commercial fisherman, and his father before him. But climate change is making Dunn consider leaving his days on the water behind him. Dunn explains why he is looking to seafood distribution instead.

Flood Zone is a special investigation reporting on flooding in Coastal Carolina communities. The podcast is a project of Shoresides and Working Narratives.

    Hurricanes & COVID-19 Affect Seafood

    Hurricanes & COVID-19 Affect Seafood

Melvin Dunn, 41, is a shrimper in Beaufort, North Carolina. Dunn lost a shrimp season with Hurricane Dorian last September and now faces further impacts from COVID-19 on the seafood industry. Dunn is from the South River – a predominantly black coastal community in Beaufort, NC. With increasingly intense hurricanes affecting his catch, Dunn decided to transition to a seafood truck delivery service after Hurricane Dorian last September. Now COVID-19 might change that.

Broadcast from the Shoresides' studio, this series compiles community stories about COVID-19 from coastal North Carolina.

Destination: Bahamas with Exec Director of Sandals Foundation Heidi Clark

Destination: Bahamas with Exec Director of Sandals Foundation Heidi Clark

This time, Deborah Howell sits down with the Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, Heidi Clark,  to talk about recovery efforts in the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. Ms. Clark explains that while there is devastation in the northern islands, the Southern Bahamas were untouched and are now mobilized to help their brothers and sisters who've lost everything.

She also reminds us that without tourism, these islands can't survive, so one of the best ways to help is to book your next vacation in the awesome islands called the Bahamas. Heidi gives us plenty of reasons to do that--from the turquoise waters to the lovely Bahamian people to the conk-cuisine to the water sports--including swimming with pigs!

Kindly consider a Bahamas vacation and a donation to SandalsFoundation.org

It will make a world of difference.

    Ruthless Politics - Ep. #10 - Dorian Conspiracies & #SharpieGate | More Epstein...Really? | Biden's Bloody Eye | #MeToo News Corner

    Ruthless Politics - Ep. #10 - Dorian Conspiracies & #SharpieGate | More Epstein...Really? | Biden's Bloody Eye | #MeToo News Corner

In this episode, we discuss: Hurrican Dorian and its destruction and strangeness. All the conspiracies on how Trump had it go right over Epstein island and then let it sit over the Bahamas to screw Chinese investments there. We also talk HAARP, weather manipulation, and cloud seeding. We wrap that all up with SharpieGate and how President Trump added Alabama on his own to the hurricane cone.

We touch on Jeffrey Epstein again! Still asking where is Ghislaine Maxwell. We ask, where the hell is Epstein's body? Was he cremated? Any service? Where is he buried? Why is nobody asking where the hell he is? Also, the French authorities let Epstein pal and accused rapist Jean Luc Brunel get away before making an arrest. France only waited for weeks.

We get right back into politics talking about Joe Biden and his bloody eyeball. Joe stays on top of the polls though despite his health and gaffes. We chat about how Liz Warren has recruited Hillary Clinton into her campaign. Will Texas go blue in 2020...maybe 2024?
Are the North Carolina congressional races an indicator of the 2020 election in that state?

We continue into more 'Russia Madness' as Kid Chronic dishes about the secret Russian CIA spy that was pulled out of Russia before he was killed by Putin.

To finish the podcast we go into Treez's #METOO corner and talk about the ladies! In this case, Rosario Dawson won't back her man Cory Booker, Sarah Palin gets served a divorce by Todd, & Ilhan Omar is a homewrecker as the wife of her 'employee' Tim Mynett files for divorce citing Omar and cheating as the cause.

Warning! This podcast contains ruthlessly sharp political commentary! On our podcast, you are gonna get ruthless political talk for about an hour.

Listen to 'Never Trumper' Kid Chronic politically spar with Treez the 'bearded Jewish MAGA Man'. Expect to hear about news, politics, current events, tech, memes and whatever else we can disagree over.

Hurricanes, and Wetlands, and Nutrients – Oh My!

Hurricanes, and Wetlands, and Nutrients – Oh My!

In this month's episode we sit down with Matt Smith, a PhD candidate at Florida International University, to talk about Hurricane Dorian and some of his research comparing urban wetlands in Portland, Oregon and Valdivia, Chile. He tells us about storm surges, sea level rise, and the comprehensive Miami-Dade County Hurricane Readiness Guide. Wetlands, as it turn out, are valuable infrastructure surrounding Miami for dealing with sea level rise and mitigating the effects of hurricanes. He also found through his research that urban wetlands in Valdivia and Portland had fairly similar nutrient dynamics. Matt contends that more cities ought to explicitly consider wetlands in their resiliency plans as key infrastructure solutions capable of improving water quality, mitigating floods, and more.
