Episode 93. Savoy Brown & Jethro Tull

Episode 93. Savoy Brown & Jethro Tull

This is a special tribute show for the late Kim Simmonds, the guitarist and founder of the English Blues Rock band Savoy Brown. The show spotlights Kim's work in the 1960's with the band. The second half of the show focuses on Ian Anderson and his retro Rennaissance band Jethro Tull. The band was an early proponent and influence on the coming music movement that would be referred to as Progressive Rock. Both bands expanded on the blues with marvelous results.

    Florian Opahle

    Florian Opahle

EPISODE 48: Florian Opahle is a German rock musician, best known for his work with progressive rock artist Ian Anderson of the band Jethro Tull, with whom he played from 2003 to 2019. From 2017 to 2019 he was the lead guitarist of Anderson's revived version of Jethro Tull. Opahle grew up in Rosenheim. He started learning classical guitar at the age of five, and was later trained on the electric guitar. In 2001 and 2002, he attended master classes with Masayuki Kato. He appeared in Europe, North and South America and Asia on and played with musicians such as Al di Meola, Greg Lake and Leslie Mandoki. He accompanied the singer Masha on her Germany tour. From 2007 to 2008 he studied music arrangement and composition at the German Pop Academy. Opahle took part in several tours with Anderson instead of longtime Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre, including on projects in which pieces by Jethro Tull were played with orchestral accompaniment. With Anderson and other musicians, he recorded the albums Thick as a Brick 2 (2012) and Homo Erraticus (2014). From 2017, Anderson toured under the name of Jethro Tull with his regular backing musicians. Opahle is also active as a studio musician and producer, among others for Alexandra Stan. At times he devotes himself to flamenco music. Since 2017, he has been running a professional recording studio with his wife called RedBoxx Studios in the south of Germany. redboxx-studios.de

    Effectively Wild about Dusty

    Effectively Wild about Dusty

Our Halloween episode has Patti briefly revisiting 1995, a very scary year, in which she first built her sportsgrudge against the Atlanta Team. But now she loves “those Hammers guys” including effectively wild Ian Anderson, the magical Eddie Rosario, and the only Austin left standing. Pottymouth reminds us of the treasure that is Dusty Baker, the first manager to take five teams to the postseason, and possibly the only to prune his family vineyards *and* live through the Monterey Pop Festival at age 18 (the family station wagon made it too). Altuve makes moves on postseason homerun records, but Manny being Manny seems safe for now. Get your taco on Thursday - Thanks, Ozzie.

Odd for us to give credit to Bob Nightengale but he earns it for not using Atlanta’s team name in his USA Today pieces. The Hammers miss an opportunity to truly honor Henry Aaron by not announcing a team name change during the ceremony. Fox makes no effort to Chop the Chop, featuring it in crowd shots. Smuck and Boltz never mention it, or the war chant, while openly discussing the cheating chants. Rob Manfred defends it based on local markets and perceived support by the *regional* Native American community -- for a National Pastime? There’s now footage of a certain former president joining in on the Chop, albeit badly, so that’s really all you need to know.

Please PETA, use your powers for good instead of distracting us with your push to rename the bullpen the “arm barn.” Although that did give us a gem of a tune from Grant Brisbee. We are looking forward to seeing how much the Cleveland Baseball Team will have to pay the local roller derby team for use of the name “Guardians.” It’s going to be fun to watch Bob Melvin manage the Padres, a team with money, and we’ve got our eye on Raquel Ferreira in the Mets GM conversation. The MLBPA’s Player’s Choice awards feature Ryan Mountcastle among other Patti BFs. The untimely passing of NESN broadcasting great, Jerry “Rem Dawg” Remy brings all the feels for Pottymouth, including some warm and hilarious memories.

Do you have the MLBTV postseason package? You could be watching Dominican winter ball! LIDOM features Tio Albert, Fernando Rodney, and Willi Castro this year -- no excuses. Pottymouth’s Cardenales de Lara are undefeated in the LVBP, and finals have started in the Puerto Rican women’s league. Pottymouth celebrates it all by teaching us baseball vocabulary in Spanish.

We say Halle Berry, Kiss the Sky, and vegan hot dogs.

Ep. 33: Astros/Braves World Series Preview, Scherzer's Noodle Arm, Worrying about the Future of MLB Pitching, Griffey Jr.'s Ownership Means More

This week the boys preview the 2021 World Series between the Houston Astros and the Atlanta Braves. They discuss what both teams will need to do to win. Looking back at the NLCS, Steve calls out Max Scherzer's noodle arm and his letting the Dodgers down, which leads to a deep discussion about the future of pitching in the MLB and how this generation of pitchers are going to be very different from decades past. After, they step outside World Series talk to give Ken Griffey Jr. props for his ownership stake with the Mariners and what that means for their fanbase and possibly other franchises getting star power ownership stakes in years to come.  Rounding out the show, the boys talk card trends in Collection Corner.

Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) / Field Report

Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) / Field Report
Hi! This month, hear my chat with befluted (not a word) frontman of Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson, as he embarks on 2 tours in 2020. Also, enjoy a fantastic conversation with one of the greatest 21st century songwriters, Chris Porterfield of Field Report. As a special treat, you can also hear an acoustic version of “Blind Spot”. This is currently the only place you can hear this recording (unless you have the tour only, erm, cassette, or you’ve hacked Chris’ computer, or he sent it to you, or some other way that hasn’t occurred to me yet; anyway, it’s pretty rare). Enjoy!

Episode 19: Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) Interview

Episode 19: Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) Interview

Join Different Times on the blower to Martin Barre, guitar legend from Jethro Tull now seven albums deep into a strong solo career.

His signature solo on the 1971 Jethro Tull standard "Aqualung" was voted by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine as one of the top rock guitar solos of all time, that means it's up there with Slayer's Criminally Insane, right? He ain't mucking around. The likes of Joe Bonamassa, Joe Satriani & Steve Via count him as an influence but more importantly the readers of Jackie magazine love the guy.

Martin Barre's latest album 'Roads Less Travelled' is released on October 5th via Cleopatra Records.
