1 Samuel 4-8 tells the story of Israel's defeat by the Philistines and the capture of the ark of the covenant. Despite the Israelites' attempts to use the ark as a weapon, they were defeated in battle because they had turned away from God and were relying on their own strength.

In 1 Samuel 5, the Philistines brought the ark to the temple of their god, Dagon, but the statue of Dagon fell before the ark, showing that God is greater than any other god.

In 1 Samuel 6, the Philistines returned the ark to Israel after suffering from plagues and realizing that they couldn't keep the ark in their land.

In 1 Samuel 7, the Israelites repented and turned back to God, and God fought for them against the Philistines, giving them a great victory.

In 1 Samuel 8, the Israelites asked for a king to rule over them, which displeased God because they were rejecting His leadership and placing their trust in a human leader instead.

Overall, the story of 1 Samuel 4-8 highlights the importance of relying on God's strength and leadership, rather than our own abilities or the strength of human leaders. It also shows that God will fight for His people when they turn back to Him and trust in His power.

They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, for better or for worse.  Chapter 14 is a study in contrast between the tree (King Saul) and the apple (his son, Jonathan).  Both make ridiculous decisions in this story, but one is faithful, while the other is foolish.  The difference is crucial for us as well.

Grab a smack of honey to brighten those eyes (and ears) and let's hear a remarkable story of faithfulness, failure, vows, and victory.

Like Indiana Jones battling the Nazis, today's passage sees the Israelites battling the Philistines.  In both cases, fictional and factual, the action surrounds one small, simple, sacred golden box: the Ark of the Covenant.

The Ark had long been the symbol of the supremacy of the God of Israel.  What does it mean, therefore, if the Ark doesn't bring victory?  Has His glory departed from His people?  What does all this have to do with our little quarantined church community?  And did Chris ever defeat those imaginary Nazis in his backyard?  Answers within.
