Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski take a quick peek into what is available to own on physical media this week. Criterion upgrades one of the late films from a master and Arbelos delivers and Peter looks at one of the first “Sundance caution tales” from the end of the ‘80s. Ida Lupino directs a ‘50s film about sexual assault and Virginie Efira becomes attached to her partner’s child. Then a pair of cult classics get the 4K treatment including Wes Craven’s comic monster movie and the quintessential Bruce Lee film.

Ida Lupino, une artiste prodige à Hollywood

Ida Lupino est à part dans le paysage hollywoodien classique.
D'abord parce que c'est une femme. Ensuite parce qu'elle est une actrice à l'origine. 

Grâce à sa farouche volonté d'indépendance, elle devient productrice et réalisatrice. 

Elle va réaliser des films subtiles, ancrés dans la réalité sociale de son époque.

Cette semaine, nous explorons son film The Bigamist, Bigamie en français, film de 1953 avec Joan Fontaine, Edmond O’Brien et Ida Lupino. 

Le titre The bigamist est en soi assez explicite mais ce film va tâcher de nous démontrer que derrière ce terme se cache autre chose. 

Il va nous révéler qu’un homme menteur, lâche et infidèle n’est peut-être pas le salaud que l’on imagine.
The Bigamist est un film où il est question de restaurants chinois, de maisons de stars et de rues en pente. 

A quelle émotion renvoie ce film ? Qu’est ce qui le rend unique ? Et pourquoi illustre-t-il parfaitement l'expression "l'enfer est pavé de bonnes intentions"?

Wir sind in den 50er Jahren angekommen und stoßen langsam in die Zeiten vor, in denen sich zumindest Becci aus dem Team so gar nicht mehr filmisch auskennt. Aber zum Glück haben wir ja unsere Gäst*innen: Alex von den „Abspannguckern“ hat uns sogar zusätzlich zum überhaupt da sein den Gefallen getan, dass wir nach 16 Folgen das erste Mal wieder über den Film einer RegisseurIN sprechen können, nämlich über „The Hitch-Hiker“. Dieser lässt sich genretechnisch als Film Noir bezeichnen, hat aber auch einiges zu bieten, was außerhalb der Genrekonventionen verläuft. Und so sprechen wir mit Alex über die Inszenierung von Autofahrten, über Freundschaft abseits von Buddy-Motiven, über fähige mexikanische Polizisten und über die Trope des psychopathischen Killers. Außerdem gibt es diesmal einige Exkurse – zum Beispiel zu der Frage, wie die typische Verpflegung auf einem 50er-Jahre-Roadtrip ausgesehen hat. Fragt nicht :)
