    The New Secular, Legalistic Pseudoreligion

    The New Secular, Legalistic Pseudoreligion

Woke philosophy, sometimes marketed under the terms Social Justice Ideology or Critical Race theory, is the new, legalistic pseudoreligion of American culture. Its adherents operate with a cultish worldview, hold to a code they consider sacrosanct, expect all others to bow to this code, and then reject all who do not agree, including much about America's past and culture. This pseudo religion, because it subsumes the individual into the group and because contrary ideas are verboten, is inherently authoritarian, seeking and depending upon the coercive power of the state. This pseudoreligion now dominates public education, government, the military, and now increasingly corporate America. To pushback is to risk ridicule, cancelling, loss of reputation, and maybe loss of employment. For believers, one must keep the faith, for the Sovereign God is still in charge, and we can find hope and peace and strength to fight the good fight knowing his accomplished works, knowing his promises, and knowing his presence in our lives. Integral Conversations: Culture Wars and Human Progress with Jeff Salzman

Integral Conversations: Culture Wars and Human Progress with Jeff Salzman
As my regular listeners will know, I’m deeply influenced by the perspective known as Integral philosophy, and in particular, the insights it affords us into how human culture has evolved—and is still evolving today. This perspective informs the conversations I have on this podcast, to one degree or another. But every now and again, I get the opportunity to welcome a guest who is deeply versed in this philosophy, and we get to have a conversation that more explicitly and directly explores the nuances of this unique way of looking at the world. Since this is a somewhat regular occurrence, I’ve dubbed these Integral Conversations, and I’m thrilled to share this one, with my friend and colleague Jeff Salzman, creator of the Daily Evolver podcast and fellow board member at the Institute for Cultural Evolution.

For well over a decade now, Jeff has been bringing the insights of integral theory and philosophy right down to the ground level, applying them to the social and political issues of the moment. Integral thinkers are often focused on big-picture insights about history and worldviews and consciousness, so Jeff’s commitment to making these ideas accessible and relevant to current events is refreshing—as is his unwavering confidence that culture is indeed evolving, despite what the headlines might suggest. In this wide-ranging conversation, Jeff and I tackle the culture wars, social media, Elon Musk, the war in Ukraine, identity politics, and more.

In 2019, he wrote The Beginner's Guide to the Bible, a non-preachy, jargon-free breakdown of the Protestant canon. In his free time, he loves trying bizarre amari, performing musical improvisational comedy, and working Hamilton references into his homebrew D&D campaigns. Problems with the West’s talk about Ukraine’s ‘decolonization’

Problems with the West’s talk about Ukraine’s ‘decolonization’

In an article titled “Ukrainian Voices?” recently published in New Left Review, sociologist Volodymyr Ishchenko warns that talk in the West about Ukraine’s “decolonization” often focuses too much on “symbols and identity” and not enough on “social transformation.” Representing the war in Ukraine “as an ideological conflict of democracy against autocracy” is intellectually inconsistent, he writes, and “works poorly” with audiences across the Global South. Dr. Ishchenko criticizes the identarian articulation of Ukraine’s decolonization, which he says reduces the agenda to “anti-Russian and anti-communist identity politics”; it’s an obstacle to “a universally relevant perspective on Ukraine.”

In the days since it was released, Dr. Ishchenko’s article has won praise and provoked fierce criticism from peers and pundits alike. This week, he joined The Naked Pravda to respond to some of that feedback and delve a bit deeper into the ideas he raised in the essay.

    Thanksgiving, Religious Liberty, Identity

    Thanksgiving, Religious Liberty, Identity

Thanksgiving Day is a uniquely American holiday dating back 400 years to the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. It's a time for remembrance, hopefully family and faith, and gratitude. I am grateful for a country where religious liberty is yet part of our experience. I am thankful, too, for my identity as a child of God, not an ephemeral identity rooted in sex, race, ethnicity, position, talent, class, etc. I am thankful for Christian parents, Dad in heaven and Mom who turns 91 this Thanksgiving day. ‘How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics’ with Olúfẹ́mi Táíwò

‘How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics’ with Olúfẹ́mi Táíwò
“Identity politics” polarizes discourse about virtually every aspect of contemporary political life. But what exactly is it, and what role does “elite capture” play in how it has come to be understood? Olúfẹ́mi Táíwò is a philosopher, assistant professor at Georgetown University and author of several books, including “Elite Capture: How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (And Everything Else)” and “Reconsidering Reparations,” both of which were published in 2022. He joins WITHpod to discuss the origins of identity politics, the problems with what he calls deference politics, and how elites have co-opted the language of social justice to their own ends.

5/20/22- Disinformation Board DIES; Shootings & "White Replacement"; Baby Formula & Unions; MORE

The Disinformation Board has been "put on hold". And The Washington Post blames a popular opinion on "Right Wingers".

Two mass shootings with in a couple of days of each other were both motivated by race. They aren't the first and they won't be the last. Political grandstanding must be the answer.

The Baby formula shortage is possibly the most egregious example of government regulated capitalism to date.

Corey has a discussion with union guys. It's amazing where a conversation can go when you remove the identity politics.

In today's episode, Becket chats with Carl Trueman about his book "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self," which explores how we got to this strange place in culture, going all the way back to 18th century philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau to the Romantic poets, Nietzsche, Darwin, Freud, and more. We discover through these key historical figures how our modern world was shaped and the dramatic effects their ideas have had on our culture today including the previously incoherent phrase, "I am a woman trapped in a man's body," and how this phrase came to be known as coherent and meaningful in our world. You will be surprised how far-reaching these ideas are and how they are in the social imaginary whether we realize it or not. This episode will help you understand how we got to the chaos and confusion of our culture in the 21st century.

Mindy Gill on the mire of identity politics

Mindy Gill on the mire of identity politics

Race, gender, class, sexuality – categories of identity have become central to not only our understanding of politics, but also our appreciation of art. Has the prominence of these categories, however, begun to circumscribe the achievements of writers celebrated on the basis of their identity? In this episode of the ABR podcast, Mindy Gill reads her cover feature from the March issue. By parsing the rhetoric with which non-white writers are evaluated by reviewers, Gill shrewdly observes that in equating marginalisation with authenticity we do writers no favours. For in having their cultural background valued above all else, writers are being tacitly encouraged to eschew refinements of style and technique for a verisimilitude that often borders on caricature.

Mindy Gill is a Brisbane-based poet and critic, and ABR’s fifth Rising Star.

Carol Platt Liebau: Identity Politics and the Supreme Court

Carol Platt Liebau: Identity Politics and the Supreme Court

This is Carol Platt Liebau for Townhall.com.

President Biden will soon nominate a black female for the Supreme Court.

In so doing, he’ll be fulfilling a pledge made to secure the endorsement of South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn.

But by announcing his nominee’s race and sex in advance, the president has made his selection about her identity, not her accomplishments. And in doing so, he’s cheapened her achievements.

The President’s approach highlights the pitfalls of affirmative action. It was intended to allow consideration of immutable characteristics—as one factor of many—to level the playing field.

But now, the left’s obsession with identity politics leaves even those with the best intentions to wonder: Is Biden’s nominee being chosen for the Supreme Court because she’s the best person for the job, or simply because she’s a black woman?

The president’s nominee deserves better. And so does America.

Carol Platt Liebau: Stop Discriminating on the Basis of Race

Carol Platt Liebau: Stop Discriminating on the Basis of Race

The Supreme Court has just agreed to hear a pair of cases challenging race-based affirmative action at Harvard and the University of North Carolina. It could signal the death knell for the legal regime establishing “diversity” as the rationale for considering skin color in college admissions.

This sort of thinking has fueled the identity politics—on race and sex and sexual identity—that dominate today’s college campuses.

Ironically, it hasn’t produced what matters most for any university: Diversity of thought.

Any admissions system should strive to ensure equal opportunity. Those surmounting extraordinary challenges should be rewarded. But it’s wrong and racist to assume that race equates with disadvantage. The child of a poverty-stricken white meth addict from Appalachia is hardly more privileged than, say, Barack Obama’s daughters.

Chief Justice Roberts has written, “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”  Now we’ll see if he meant it, and if the other justices agree.

The PMC, or: Exciting New Ways to Hate the Middle Class

The PMC, or: Exciting New Ways to Hate the Middle Class

All the way back in 1977 John and Barbara Ehrenreich coined the term “the professional-managerial class” to refer to “salaried mental workers who do not own the means of production and whose major function in the social division of labour may be described broadly as the reproduction of capitalist culture and capitalist class relations.” The term reemerged in the 2010s with renewed vigour as a useful way of denoting a class of technocratic liberals who occupy an increasingly dominant role in culture and politics, indulging in performative social justice posturing with one hand while resolutely defending the status quo with the other.

On this episode, the crew discuss the latest intervention into this particular discourse, Catherine Liu’s 2021 book Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional-Managerial Class. In an attempt to locate the PMC in Ireland, we dive deep into the perverse habits and proclivities of this group of people, skewer their tendency to scold and moralise, and debate whether or not we should even think of them as a separate class at all. Oh, and about two thirds of the way through, we also watch some porn. Don’t ask me why.

Oh, and because we always forget, a quick request (note: not begging) to share the podcast with your friends and family if you think they’d like it. People always say that iTunes reviews help, so maybe do that as well? Otherwise you might just be a perverted PMC dog.
