Ep. #029 SquadCast Interview with Cavan Scott and Nick Brokenshire

Ep. #029 SquadCast Interview with Cavan Scott and Nick Brokenshire

    Welcome Back

In our latest episode of The Pop Culture Squadcast We are happy to bring you a conversation with a pair of creators who have a very cool comic project coming to shops soon. Writer Cavan Scott and artist Nick Brokenshire will be debuting Dead Seas from IDW Publishing in December.

This pair of longtime collaborators have a massive list of comic work between them. We have already reviewed the first issue of their new creator-owned book Dead Seas which you can find on popculturesquad.com. I was super excited to get the opportunity to talk about it with them.

Cavan Scott has written quite a bit of Star Wars content in novel, audio book, and comic form over the years. He also has written for properties such as Pacific Rim, Transformers, Doctor Who, Adventure Time and more. His creator owned comics include Shadow Service from Vault and The Ward from Dark Horse Comics.

Nick is an comic artist who has worked on Star Wars, Transformers, and The Once And Future Queen among others.

We talked about the process of making their latest collaboration and spent some time talking about the differences of growing up a fan of the comic media in the UK verses America.

We hope you enjoy the SquadCast

    JUDGING BY THE COVER JR.

Interview: Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly about Star Trek #1 out now!

    • What was the original pitch for Star Trek, and how did the story change once you got started?
    • This is a unique project as it’s a jumping on point with a new adventure, yet draws on elements from multiple series, how do you walk that line and keep folks satisfied on both sides?
    • Given the cast of this series an outside might ask, why would the Federation put so many top starfleet brass on one mission?
    • It’s fitting Sisco and Picard meet, since Picard was in the deep space 9 pilot, was this on purpose mirroring that series with this one?
    • You teased some card playing with data, might we get a juicy card game some point?
    • With IDW introducing new Star Trek series, and I know it’s insanely early to ask, but might a crossover be in the cards someday?
    • Is the creature at the end a similar Crystalline Entity we’ve seen before?
    • With such a large cast, who might be the under the radar character to keep eyes on?
    • Will Nomad get to share any panel time with Steve and Sharon and reunite with his family?
    • Are there any plots for Sharon in the works? Either regarding her relationship with Steve during all this or being involved in the reveals about Peggy?

Segment: Interview:  Jill Carter Comicazi Manager - 2017 Eisner Award Winner

407 Highland Ave, Somerville, MA 02144

    1. First, could you talk a little bit about the store, what you offer, and what it takes to win an Eisner haha?
    2. Somerville officially closed non-essential businesses March 20, did you anticipate this would happen and if so how did you prepare?
    3. During the pandemic do you continue to sell comics and do curbside pickup, how does that seem to be going?
    4. Reopening started in June, is that right? How did you guys open, what was foot traffic like?
    5. The pandemic has been accentuated by a change in the direct distribution world too, can you tell us your thoughts on DC’s move away from Diamond and what it means for LCSs like yourself?
    6. In that same vein, Bad Idea is a positing a world where comics are exclusive to LCSs, and even limited there. Do you think a kind of forced exclusivity model is good for comic shops, or does broader promotion and availability bring people in?
    7. What’s the biggest win you’ve had during this very weird year, and what do you wish you could have done differently?
    8. Have you noticed any difference in sales for a certain publisher during these pandemic times?
    9. With Comic-Con@Home, have you tuned in at all? What function does the convention scene serve for a comic store manager?
    10. What comics are you reading right now? How do you discover new things to recommend to customers?
    11. If you weren’t managing a comic shop, what would you do and why?

Ep.#008 Squadcast Interview with Writer Joe Harris

Welcome back to another spotlight interview. In this session, we spoke with award-winning comics creator and screenwriter Joe Harris.

Joe has a written a new comic comic, Disaster, Inc., debuting this week from AfterShock Comics. It is drawn and colored by Sebastián Piriz and lettered by Carlos Mangual.

He has written for Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, and Storm King Comics, among others. He is well known for shepherding the return of The X-Files to comics at IDW beginning in 2013. Some of his other titles include: Great Pacific, Snowfall, Rockstars, Slingers, and Surviving Nuclear Attack.

Harris also wrote the screenplay to Sony Pictures' Darkness Falls. His style is very character centered and his creator owned work tends to cling to the horror or speculative fiction genres.

We were excited to get a chance to talk to him about his writing process and also how he is dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic while living in New York City.
