    Be Kind

    Be Kind

We could all use a little kindness in our lives. Surprisingly, a little altruism can actually have big benefits for our own health! Michael discovers that small acts of kindness can not only boost your mental health and improve your relationships but also boost the immune system. Dr Tristan Inagaki from the San Diego State University explains to Michael how her research has revealed that those performing acts of kindness had lower levels of systemic inflammation, which could reduce the risk of many major diseases. Meanwhile, our volunteer Sam enjoys finding ways to consciously incorporate kindness into his week.

    Have a Laugh

    Have a Laugh

Laughter really is good medicine. From releasing pain-killing endorphins to improving your memory, laughter can have many benefits on your body and brain - it’s even been shown to boost “gamma” brainwaves, which are associated with higher level brain processes, like learning and memory. In this episode, Michael shares a chuckle with cardiologist Professor Michael Miller from the University of Pennsylvania in the US to discuss how laughter can help your heart health, keep your blood vessels young, and be the antidote to stress. Meanwhile, our volunteer Manpreet enjoys the benefits of a glorious cackle.

Immune Boosting: Is It a Bust?

Immune Boosting: Is It a Bust?
Internet influencers have been pushing “immune boosters” during the pandemic — claiming they’ve got just the pill, berry or brew to rev up our body’s defenses. But is there really a way to boost our immune system? We’re finding out whether these vitamins and supplements truly work as a shield against colds and viruses. We speak to public health Prof. Tim Caulfield, nutrition Prof. Carol Johnston, immunologist Shiv Pillai, and immune aging researcher Niharika Duggal.  UPDATE 3/12/21: An earlier version of this episode overstated the evidence that starting to exercise leads to fewer colds and flus. While we do have lots of evidence that suggests exercise is good for our immune system, the research around starting an exercise program is more mixed. We've updated the episode. #88 Nutrition Science Series (Part 3 of 3) The Supplementation Series with Kamal Patel

#88 Nutrition Science Series (Part 3 of 3) The Supplementation Series with Kamal Patel

*CAUTION - Explicit Language in this episode*

Confused about supplements? Struggle to understand nutrition science? Constantly bombarded by conflicting headlines about which diet is better than another? How do we make sense of all this information when the noise-signal ratio is so disproportionate?

Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Kamal Patel who is the co-founder and director of Examine.com. The world’s largest unbiased, internet site that peer reviews academic literature on diet, supplements and nutrition knowledge to give the most uncoerced information you can find anywhere. A site that I have personally used during my masters, recommended and supported throughout my nutrition journey.

Kamal holds two master’s degrees from Johns Hopkins University, in business and in public health, he’s published peer-reviewed articles on vitamin D and calcium, as well as on a variety of clinical research topics. He’s also been involved in research on fructose and liver health, on nutrition in low-income areas, and on mindfulness meditation.

There are SO MANY things we talk about in this pod that I’ve decided to split it up into 2 parts. The amount of information we talk about is quite overwhelming to listen to, but trust me it’s worth a good listen and there are so many insights I picked up on from Kamals wealth of knowledge:

    • Circadian Zeitgebers
    • Non diet Paleolithic perspective
    • How misinformation and bias starts from the Research labs
    • Multivitamins, fish oil, vitamin D
    • Supplements and Lifestyle for Stress, Sleep, Anxiety and
    • Nootropics and Adaptogens
    • The Placebo effect
    • Brain and Cognitive enhancing supplements, green tea, choline, berries, fish oil
    • Supplements for Vegans - B12, choline, creatine, carnosine, fatty acids
    • Collagen for arthritis and skin
    • Contaminants in supplements
    • How to choose supplements
    • The precautionary principle with supplementation
    • Immunonutrition
    • Corona Virus supplements - Zinc, elderberry, Vitamin D, Garlic, Vitamin C
    • Health tracking, wearable devices and investigations
    • How often research makes Kamal change his mind
