A founder's journey to climatetech investing, with me, Ryan Grant Little

This inverview is the 25th and final episode of my podcast Sound Funding, where I've been interviewing impact fund managers together with Impact Europe since 2020. If you're interested in impact funds, I highly recommend checking out the back catalogue!

Impact Europe's podcast host Benjamin DeVries interviewed me about my background as a founder, how I became a climatetech investor, why I started podcasting, and what I think about McKinsey (👎)  and spicy chicken wings (👍).

Beyond carbon: reimagining impact Venture Capital with Melina Sánchez Montañez

Beyond carbon: reimagining impact Venture Capital with Melina Sánchez Montañez

Melina Sánchez Montañéz has covered some ground, from working on Wall Street to serving as a diplomat. Today she combines her finance expertise and interest in public policy as a cleantech investor at AENU in Berlin.

We talked about why traditional venture capital is broken, why carbon isn’t the only metric that matters for the climate, and the problem with climate bros.

Melina offers fresh perspectives on what needs to change in our investment approach to solve a crisis that is both happening now but also needs lots of future planning, on the problem with incremental change, and how Berlin is on the rise in all things climate. Melina's hero is Cecile Bilious.

The Future of the Digital Divide: It’s Brighter than you Think

Viola Llewellyn, CoFounder of Ovamba, is facing risk head on and helping banks to do the same along the way. The result: decrease of the digital and financial divide and a healthier ecosystem, as those who formerly were turned away when requesting funding are better seen as promise rather than risk. Juggling multiple cultures has given her the unique ability to “code-switch”,  have better access and understand a broad range of stakeholders. One key takeaway - impact investing actually lessens the risk of a portfolio as it promotes wealth through healthy business whereas NGOs primarily prevent poverty. Far too often people mistake philanthropy as a form of impact investing.  Listen to learn more about impact investing, equity, fintech and the lessening of the digital divide.

Join us for our next episode on December 14 with James Ehrlich, where we’ll talk about the future of living as we learn more about his regenerative community effort. Will tech finally be embraced as friend vs. foe? Listen to find out!
