Ep 29: Trophy Hunters: A Mission to Honor, Heal and Feed Others.

Ep 29: Trophy Hunters: A Mission to Honor, Heal and Feed Others.

When you hear the term "trophy hunter", you might you have a visceral negative reaction, which is understandable when you see social media photos of wealthy individuals, rifle in hand, smiling proudly next to a dead exotic animal they just killed like an elephant, lion, rhino, or giraffe.  Millions of people worldwide condemn this blood sport. I ran into two trophy hunters who were willing to share their story.

On a recent trip to San Antonio, Texas to visit the Alamo, I checked out the Buttermilk Cafe in nearby New Braunfels, and met a recently married couple, Tom and Marisa Snyder.

Tom grew up very poor, and despite only having a high school education, he grew a very successful insurance business and decided to give back to those in need by providing free scholarships for kids of all ages to experience the great outdoors on a charitable ranch he founded called Trinity Oaks. The program became so successful, Tom was approached by numerous veterans organizations to host special hunts for the disabled, as well as "dream hunts" for the terminally ill.

One of those dream hunts was for Marisa's husband, Jason, who was dying of cancer.  Jason went on his dream hunt but didn't get to harvest the animal on his wish list. When Tom learned this, he invited a family member to complete the hunt in Jason's honor, which Marisa accepted, and bagged an exotic Axis deer. Marisa was so impressed with Trinity Oaks' ability to transform lives, she volunteered to help out, was soon offered a fulltime position, and began working with Tom directly. They fell in love and married last year.

Since then, they have followed their passion for hunting all the way to Africa to harvest the Big Five and Dangerous Seven animals of the world. They defend their hunting trips which fund anti-poaching programs and feed thousands of people by donating 100% of the meat to local villages.

Listen to their story and make up your own mind regarding the ethics of trophy hunting. If you would like to learn more about Tom's charity organization near San Antonio, please visit: www.trinityoaks.org.

The Sage Sayers: Finding Our Purpose at Work. Perspectives From a Uruguay EA and Coach

My guest this week is Yasna Garcia da Rosa, an executive assistant and ICF-certified coach based in Uruguay who simply loves her job. This feeling becomes rare in today's turbulent economy where many feel despair vs. joy.

Yasna works for a leading pharmaceutical firm and through a recent work trip to Africa felt reminded of her purpose, her passion, and her love for what she does. One of my favorite parts of the interview, which we conducted last month, is Yasna's joy when learning her company chose her to become the ambassador for Uruguay for the program she visited in Africa. I also loved hearing her tips on how we too can find gratitude and joy within every day.

    The Chase

    The Chase

Hey Everyone! I have a question for ya! Have you ever tried to chase after something and couldn’t catch it? It’s so frustrating. Some people may just give up while others don’t stop until they catch it.

Some people do this in their spiritual and emotional lives and it can be exhausting! Especially, if you are going about it the wrong way. Well,  I have good news you don’t have to run after the wrong thing any longer. There’s only one thing you need to chase and I will discuss that in this episode. I hope you enjoy!

    (Intro & piano music)

    Happy New Year everyone!
Here's a little myth of strength and beauty to kickstart the month. The Ancient Greeks believed there was a creature born way before the gods that held all the knowledge. It had the most beautiful voice and the most amazing colours in its feathers. Some said it was the size of an eagle and others, bigger than an ostrich! But when it sang, the Sun would stop its chariot to listen to the song. There was only one born every five hundred years and when time was up, it would build a nest and set itself on fire, only to reborn and start the cycle again. Its name in ancient Greek meant deep red but the myth can be found in Egypt, Africa and Persia with variations yet, the name remains the same, ΦΟΙΝΙΚΑΣ/ PHOENIX

Adriana Barton - Wired for Music!

Adriana Barton - Wired for Music!

Music releases dopamine, and dopamine makes us feel good! It’s a scientific fact. We get happy when we listen to music. Who doesn't love going to see their favourite band live, or singing along to a treasured album, or staring out the car window with the perfect road song on the radio. But there's so much more to it than that...

In her remarkable debut book Wired for Music: A Search for Health and Joy Through the Science of Sound, author Adriana Barton guides us through her own personal musical journey, and the many ways in which the brain and music work in harmony.

Adriana left her life as a classical cellist in her late 20s, after a gruelling 17 years of intense musical discipline. In this episode, Adriana talks about how she made her way back to music via discoveries about the science of music, and learning how it can help with mood, anxiety, overall well-being, and even healthy aging. You'll also hear Adriana perform "Tadzungaira", a traditional song of the Mbira, from Zimbabwe.

Music Publishing & Sync: Where to Start w/ Miller Williams, Senior VP Creative, Kobalt Music Publishing

Music Publishing & Sync: Where to Start w/ Miller Williams, Senior VP Creative, Kobalt Music Publishing

"The better the song, the more likely it is to get synced and the more people will listen to it."

This episode’s guest is Miller Williams, Senior VP Creative at Kobalt Music Publishing. Miller’s role at Kobalt covers A&R, songwriter services, and catalogue acquisitions. He also works with their international agents and sub-publishers to exploit their songs and help their writers with co-write opportunities. Signings include Becky Hill, Milow, Jef Martens, Houston Comma publishing, Carla Monroe, AJ Tracy, Martin Sjolie, and Alex Clare. Williams has also held similar A&R and/or creative positions at Sony ATV UK, BMG Records UK, PWL Records UK, and Terrace Music (Nashville). In this episode, Miller talks about going from zero to hero, getting synchs and how things work when you are writing and pitching songs to K-Pop and J-Pop artists. They also get into how things are working in Africa these days and of course how Miller made it into the music ecosystem to start with.

Kobalt is one of the most successful independent companies for music publishing, label services and rights management. In his role as Senior Vice President of Creative there, Miller works across A&R, collaborations and music marketing.

"Yeah! Usually what I find is that if you scratch beneath the surface, the artists who have become successful have done a ton of work behind the scenes that no one has known about. I don’t think there’s any shortcut to success. Lil Nas X did become famous quite quickly through TikTok, but he’s proven that he can write hit after hit which is another important thing - longevity. That’s a real skill to be able to keep going and reinvent yourself."

    July 5 - BlackFacts.com Black History Minute

    July 5 - BlackFacts.com Black History Minute

BlackFacts.com presents the black fact of the day for July 5.

Frederick Douglass gave his speech "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?".

He was an African American abolitionist, orator, newspaper publisher, and author. He became the first Black U.S. marshal.

Douglass was born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Talbot County, Maryland. When he was seven years old, he was sent to his master, Captain Aaron Anthony, at a nearby plantation.

On September 3, 1838, Douglass escaped from slavery. With identification borrowed from a free Black seaman, he traveled to New York City.

He remained an avid reader throughout his adult life. In 1847, he began publishing his own abolitionist newsletter, the North Star.

He became a powerful orator, often traveling six months out of the year to give lectures on abolition.

When radical abolitionists, under the motto "No Union with Slaveholders", criticized Douglass's willingness to engage in dialogue with slave owners, he replied: "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong."

In July 5, 1852, he  delivered his speech at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, held at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York.

The speech explores the constitutional and values-based arguments against the continued existence of Slavery in the United States.
