    Episode 242:Meander

    (Intro & piano music)
There are two versions of this myth and I chose the one places ancient Turkey and Ancient Greece geologically closer than they are today. The Greek God Ασωπός (Asopos), son of Poseidon, gave his name to a river that ran through central Greece and sprang from another river in Asia Minor. The river Μαίανδρος (Meandros). That river had so many twists and turns that its name is used to describe a very winding flow or way of travel. In modern Greek, the word is used described that little winding pattern you see in ancient greek merchandise. The word originally came into English from Latin around 1590 and was kept as a description of river flows until 1630 when it started being used metaphorically. The original river, now located in Turkey, is called Menderes and drains into the Aegean. ΜΑΙΑΝΔΡΟΣ/MEANDER

    Episode 194: Phoenix

    (Intro & piano music)

    Happy New Year everyone!
Here's a little myth of strength and beauty to kickstart the month. The Ancient Greeks believed there was a creature born way before the gods that held all the knowledge. It had the most beautiful voice and the most amazing colours in its feathers. Some said it was the size of an eagle and others, bigger than an ostrich! But when it sang, the Sun would stop its chariot to listen to the song. There was only one born every five hundred years and when time was up, it would build a nest and set itself on fire, only to reborn and start the cycle again. Its name in ancient Greek meant deep red but the myth can be found in Egypt, Africa and Persia with variations yet, the name remains the same, ΦΟΙΝΙΚΑΣ/ PHOENIX

    Episode 191: Barbarian

    (Intro & piano music)

Nowadays, in order to describe something we don't understand, we make a reference to a difficult language for us. The English say 'It's all Greek to me', the Greeks say 'It's all Chinese to me' and so on. In ancient Greece-and here, I have to remind you that it was an empire with all the faults that come with one-the sound the Greeks heard from foreigners was 'VAR-VAR' (the letter v is written and pronounced b in English). And that's what they used to mock anyone not Greek, They also had a phrase 'πάς μη Ελλην, Βαρβαρος' anyone not Greek is a ΒΑΡΒΑΡΟΣ/BARBARIAN

16: Boy friendships, and supporting our sons in forming positive friendships. Also what the %#*!😳 we should do about swearing?

When we covered the issues of friendship groups, with girls in mind, we had a massive reaction from parents who have been struggling to understand what's going on. Now it's the turn of boys. When friendships work, they are extremely beneficial, but what causes boys to struggle with their mates, and how can we help them?

Also, how do you deal with swearing in your family? Is it absolutely forbidden, does it matter who's doing it and when, or are you all a bit potty-mouthed? We look at the science and the social side of swearing.

Episode 50: Supporting Our Kids in Speech, Language, and Literacy

Episode 50: Supporting Our Kids in Speech, Language, and Literacy

Detecting whether your child has a speech or language disorder can be confusing, and it is best to leave it up to the professionals to diagnose such a disorder. In this episode, Leanne Dall, a speech-language pathologist, shares some ways to detect signs that may point to the fact that your child is having difficulty with their speech and language abilities and ways to help them improve such skills. She also shares some ways to identify when it would make sense to get your child tested by a speech-language therapist so that they can receive the proper support.

    About our guest:
Leanne Dall is a pediatric speech-language pathologist in Portland, Oregon. She is passionate about supporting children who are late talkers, difficult to understand, struggling to learn to read, and/or having difficulty understanding what they read. After witnessing the long-lasting impact of speech and language difficulties on academic and social development, Leanne is a strong advocate for early intervention. She has worked in public schools since 2014 and started her private practice Dallhouse Speech and Language in 2017.

8:47 Speech therapy at 3 and 4 years old
