What if we could create a space where safety, identity, belonging, and connection resided?  What if everytime you walked in the room everyone was happy to see you?  What there was a place where your gifts and insight was welcomed or even required by community?  What if there was a space where you brought what you had and took what you needed?  What if in this place community equaled family? What if I told you this place existed. It is called the Table!

26: Friendships: How to support your ‘generation isolation’ teens to build their social skills.

26: Friendships: How to support your ‘generation isolation’ teens to build their social skills.

Our teens have been dubbed Generation Isolation by the UK charity OnSide. It follows a poll which showed that 77% of young people spend most of their free time at home and 73%  spend most of their free time on screens.

The charity says that while online communication is important and has some benefits, its dominance means young people are missing out on the face-to-face interactions that build social skills, confidence, self-esteem, resilience and empathy.

Whilst it's normal for teens to spend a lot of time alone in their rooms there seems to have been a general change in the amount of physical time that teens are spending socialising. We'll talk another time about parties, and managing them, but this time we discuss those all-important social skills and what we, as parents, can do to hep our teens develop them.

6: We talk about body image and chores: Helping teenagers to develop a positive body image. Also, getting your teenager to do chores without nagging.

A healthy body image: Feeling happy and satisfied with your body and what it can do.

An unhealthy body image: Highly self-critical, comparing their body to others and obsessing about some aspect of it.

Beauty and body image are universal triggers for shame. Shame is a deeply painful sensation from the belief that we’re not good enough and will not be accepted by a group.

    Influences:

    • Family environment,
    • Ability/disability
    • Attitudes of peers
    • Social media
    • Cultural background

Only 5% of American women have the body type that advertising depicts as ideal. People magazine poll found that 80% of women respondents felt insecure when they viewed images of women in TV and films. There’s an entire industry fueling our negative feelings regarding body image.

How to prevent body image issues as a parent:

Psychologists Jean Baker Miller and Irene Stiver 1997 study said that what gives us self-esteem (the opposite of shame) isn’t a terrific outfit or success, it’s forming and maintaining relationships which makes people feel sure of their value.

    • Talk to your teenager about images in social media. Help them to see how fake they are and how digital manipulation is rife, also how everyone doesn’t look like that.
    • Praise your teenager for what they can do, not what they look like.
    • Sharing the knowledge that shame is a normal experience helps the teenager feel that they aren’t alone.
    • Be kind to yourself. Expecting perfection from ourselves makes us expect it from others.
    • Be proud of things about yourself that aren’t about your appearance.
    • Avoid negative talk about your diet/crash diets.
    • As a parent, be proud of what your body can do.

    What to look out for:

    • The teenager belongs to a group that insists on a certain body type.
    • Perfectionism.
    • Continually comparing their body to someone else.
    • Not wanting to leave the house, or try new things, because of the way they look.
    • Obsessing about weight, or a part of their body.
    • Spending a lot of time looking in the mirror for imperfections.
    • Linking food with feelings of guilt or shame.
    • Strange eating habits.

    What to do

    • Talk with your child about what you’ve noticed. Don’t dismiss it.
    • There are some excellent self-help books.
    • Seek professional help early.

    Chores:

Household duties develop a sense of purpose. Lack of purpose is one of the most reported problems in suicidal people. Teens are capable of doing practically any household duty and gives them a sense of belonging to the family team.

The Gift of Failure Jessica Lahey: Children prefer parents who hold them responsible for not meeting expectations over those who monitor their children.

    • Assign tasks ahead of time, weekly/daily, whether using a formal chart or an informal agreement.
    • Show them how to do it.
    • Don’t take over when they make a mess, or are too slow. Help them establish their

    Confidence Conversation with Elaine Hart

    Confidence Conversation with Elaine Hart

This Episode is with Elaine Hart Chief Banana Officer from Power Fitness Events.

Elaine's business took off at the height of the first COVID-19 lockdown when she created connection and a high energy space.  Since then she's created such a family of people who are connected through movement it's truly inspiring.

Every "rider" has a name and we talk about why and how I got the name GayleFORCE which on every ride I almost step into this zone and this gives me a boost of confidence in my running.

In this confidence conversation we explore so much!  Creating connection is a big part of confidence for Elaine and she firmly believes that confidence can feel or seem unreachable because of the attached stigma, that said she also believes that confidence is a practice and like everything else we would practice we have to practice confidence.

Elaine shares some things that have helped her with confidence over time from Banana's words that every "rider" brings to their ride and how these words spark conversation that drives and creates the infamous #bikechat.

We couldn't help but notice the abundance of C's that we discussed from confidence to curiosity to compassion, to courage, to connected, to clear to COVID!

This confidence conversation is open, honest and unashamedly Elaine - I LOVED IT!

We came back together in October 21 for Elaine to reflect on the impact of losing her Dad on her confidence - we'd realised we'd talked about what influences confidence - the bike - but less about who influences it.

Personal Growth and Healing through Creative Writing with Molly Gibson Kirby

Personal Growth and Healing through Creative Writing with Molly Gibson Kirby

Molly Gibson Kirby was born in Liverpool, England, and grew up in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Growing up in a town with one stop light allowed her to create her own story. All she knew was that one day she would be living a life that she always dreamed up, beating the odds she faced in Liverpool.

Molly moved out when she was 14, dealing with hard mental health battles. She eventually graduated college with a major in Broadcast Journalism through the Radio Television Arts program at NSCC. Her passion was to tell stories, whether her own stories or others.

Molly always knew that she would have to make a move to start her career in Journalism, but she never expected the move to be in northern Manitoba. She accepted a morning news position in Thompson Manitoba, 8 hours north of Winnipeg.

There, she lived life to the fullest. Molly experienced northern life and it gave her a better understanding of the world, First Nations and how Canada is failing them. She saw the northern lights every night, went to trapping festivals, saw homes with no lights or water in the middle of a city, went snowshoeing and eventually became the only reporter at the Thompson Citizen Newspaper, writing about 80% of the newspaper every week.

After two -50 degree winters, she knew her time was up and that she needed to venture even further west. At that point, Molly had never gone to BC and it was never a thought on her mind to move out west. But, again, she accepted a job in Kelowna, googled the city and knew in her heart this was the place she was supposed to be.

Since living in Kelowna for nearly 6 years now, Molly has had the chance to open up about her mental health on a larger scale, hosting and speaking at mental health events. Kelowna is also the place where she's grown my passion for yoga, sustainability and low to zero waste living.

Her blog thebookofmolly.com is the place where Molly shares mental health wins, lessons she's learned through yoga, sustainable tips and travel diaries. It’s her place on the internet to show others that not everything you see on social media is a staged photo with a professional behind the camera. She is determined to keep it real, share insights in her life and tips on people hoping to feel better and get better. After working so many years in journalism and covering so many tragedies, Molly decided she would focus her time on doing better, being better and helping others see the better in the world.

In Kelowna, Molly works in real estate marketing and is working to build her career as a full-time freelance writer.. She loves Kelowna. She loves the possibilities, the environment, the people and the desire for the citizens to do better.

Molly is committed to continuing to better herself through yoga practice, sustainability, saying no to fast fashion, sharing her mental health journey, and swapping to zero waste alternatives.
