    EP:98 Validation and Acknowledgement

Who are you arguing with? Maybe not the person in front of you. For most of us Trauma argues with trauma.

Our real human nature is love, mental clarity, creativity, and a zest for life that is informed by the past but no longer weighed down or controlled by it. Conflict worsens when two people fall into defensive reactions. Then there is no real communication happening, only trauma arguing with trauma. ~ Young Pueblo

My Spirit Guide's Message About the Importance of Connection

My Spirit Guide's Message About the Importance of Connection

In this week’s episode, I share a channeled message from a spirit guide I met in meditation during my course at Arthur Findlay College in England last year. Since my trip, we are still getting acquainted. As I sat in meditation to prepare for this episode, I asked my guides who would like to come forward to share a message with you. I was pleased when he stepped forward with a smile. His 3-part message is about healing, connection, and that we are not alone.

There are several messages within this message. I recommend listening to it several times to take it all in. I certainly did! This way is often best when we hear and read channeled work. It allows the mind to open up, consider, and receive spiritual information.

Stay tuned next week for a wonderful conversation with Renee Baribeau, The Practical Shaman! She is the author of Winds of Spirit: Ancient Wisdom Tools for Navigating Relationships, Health, and the Divine and the co-host of The Shamans Cave with Sandra Ingerman. Tina Moody introduced me to this magical podcast, and I've loved every episode since! Learn more about Renee Baribeau at thepracticalshaman.com and The Shamans Cave podcast at theshamanscave.com.

Ep. 110: Love, Sex... & Tantra?

Ep. 110: Love, Sex... & Tantra?

Today we are going to explore the topic of love, sex and connection. It is fascinating because all 3 can exist independently. You can love someone but not enjoy sex with them. You may enjoy sex with them but don’t feel connected on a deeper level. You may love them and feel a deep connection, but sex is a letdown. In an ideal world, you have all 3 in one place with one person.

One hears about tantra as the ultimate way to bring those concepts together, but is it? What is tantra? What is tantric sex? What is tantric massage? How can couples meditate together, and does it improve their sex life?

Our guest today is Michelle Alva, certified tantra and yoga teacher. Michelle received her degree in Physical Therapy 28 years ago and is also a certified hypnotist and NLP or Neurolinguistic Programming Practitioner.

    The Power of Interactive Appreciation

    The Power of Interactive Appreciation

Our brains weren’t designed just to problem solve, or acquire knowledge. Truth is, they were first, and foremost, created to give us the ability to live in relationship, and appreciation is the current on which they run. And it keeps your RCs ON and humming. Appreciation involves the recognition, enjoyment, and full understanding of the value of something that you can touch, taste, see, hear, or feel, (nature), or have experienced.
Living in a constant state of appreciation is crucial for our own wellbeing and the deepening of our relationships.

Join Tennison & Ginelle as they discuss the power of Interactive Appreciation. Listen in as they explain what it is and share how this simple practice changed their lives.  Hear stories of how others have been impacted by practicing this simple tool.

Living WITH God ~ Life WITH God pt. 2

Living WITH God ~ Life WITH God pt. 2

"LIFE UNDER, OVER, FROM, and FOR GOD each seeks to use God to achieve some other goal. God is seen as a means to an end. For example, LIFE FROM GOD uses him to supply our material desires. LIFE OVER GOD uses him as the source of principles or laws. LIFE UNDER GOD tries to manipulate God through obedience to secure blessings and avoid calamity. And LIFE FOR GOD uses him and his mission to gain a sense of direction and purpose.”

“But LIFE WITH GOD is different because its goal is not to use God, its goal is God. He ceases to be a device we employ or a commodity we consume. Instead God himself becomes the focus of our desire. But before we can really desire God, we must have a clear understanding of who he is and what he is like. The reason most people gravitate to one of the other four postures is because they’ve never received a clear vision of who God is, and so they settle for something less.”

In this episode Tennison and Ginelle conversation centers around what living a LIFE WITH GOD looks like, presented in the book 'WITH: Reimagining The Way You Relate to God' by Skye Jethani.   The LIFE WITH GOD means treasuring him above all else. The goal is not to use God, the goal is God.  The other four postures use God as a means to an end. Those with an incomplete or tainted view of God either want to use Him or dismiss Him

    • Under - tries to manipulate God through obedience to secure blessing and avoid trouble
    • Over - source of principles or laws to solve problems or have a better life.
    • From - To supply our material needs.
    • For - used God and his mission to gain a sense of direction and purpose

God  is not a device we use or a commodity we consume.  God, himself is the focus of our desire. But if we don't have a clear understanding of who he is and what he is like we will gravitate to one of the other four postures. Those with a full clear picture of God want nothing less than to be with him. Once we see and understand who and what God truly is, He will cease to be how we acquire our treasure, and become our treasure. Listen in as Tennison & Ginelle begin this compelling discussion.

52: Christmas and holiday stress with teenagers and tweens.

52: Christmas and holiday stress with teenagers and tweens.

A holiday is when someone is free to do what they want, such as travel or relax. That's according to the Cambridge Dictionary.

The problem with teenagers, is that what they want to do for several weeks over summer - such as sleep or use their electronic devices all day - may not fit with what we think they should be doing.

Also, having them around, doing what they want, may not be very relaxing for others who're also on holiday, or trying to work.

So how do we survive the school holidays in a way that leaves us, and our relationships, unscathed?

Top tip: lower your expectations of yourself and them for at least the first two weeks, and avoid comparisons with other families.

The LIFE FOR GOD posture is motivated by a fear of living an insignificant life.  The mission or the task becomes the center of the Christian life.  Join Tennison and Ginelle as they begin to untangle this very popular stance in the life of christians.  If not checked the mission controls almost everything: time, relationships, health, spiritual depth, ethics, and convictions. In advanced stages, missionalism means doing whatever it takes to solve the problem. In its worst iteration, the end always justifies the means. The family goes; health is sacrificed; integrity is jeopardized; God connection is limited. The goal is to do this life WITH God.

In this episode Tennison and Ginelle conversation centers around what living a LIFE FROM GOD looks like, presented in the book 'WITH: Reimagining The Way You Relate to God' by Skye Jethani.  LIFE FROM GOD is the third posture that Skye Jethani talks about.  People that live in this posture believe that God exists to supply what we need or desire. Receiving God’s gifts is the entirety of our relationship with Him.  They have reduced God to a Genie to grant is our desires.  Living here Feeds into our selfish nature, it cuts off the redemptive purpose of pain, and in our pursuit of distraction by comfort we forget the One who alone is able to deliver us, and we seek lesser things.  When this happens we believe that what we want is want God wants for us. We then truly miss out on the good gifts that the Father wants to give us.

In this episode Tennison and Ginelle conversation centers around what living a LIFE OVER GOD looks like, presented in the book 'WITH: Reimagining The Way You Relate to God' by Skye Jethani.  LIFE OVER GOD dismisses religion as irrational superstition and seeks control by discovering how the world works and then directly implementing the right principles. Living a LIFE OVER GOD means that there is no room or need for God. Our desire to control our environment and mitigate our fears no longer require appeasing God. Instead, we view the universe as a machine that we can understand.  This reduces and limits God to a reproducible formula and worst than that you stop looking to a relationship WITH God and look to just discern the reliable principles of God.

49: Snapchat addiction; the app that's a fantastic way to connect, or a cynical exploitation of your teenager's time?

Snapchat has become a must-have for most teens, because it's now the way they stay in touch with their friends. The filters make it fun, they can see where their friends are on Snapmaps, and the instant photos give them a quick and easy contact point.

But one of our listeners has contacted us asking for help with it. She says her teen son was already struggling to control himself when it comes to screens so she's delayed allowing him to have Snapchat, but caved because all of his friends are using it.

Now, she says, he is always on a device and easily finds ways around the controls they have been trying to put in place; primarily to access Snapchat.

Our previous episode on Screens and Teens covers the ways in which you can tackle it. It's not the amount of screen time we should worry most about, it's what they are doing with their screens.

    • Remember you don't have to be on every app; pick the ones you find most fun and useful, and least toxic.
    • Disable screen notifications.
    • Decide in advance how much time you want to spend playing a game or browsing an app.
    • Find ways to create 'space' between the urge and action of scrolling/gaming.
    • Set a 'digital sunset' (a time when your phone goes in a drawer/on airplane mode) about an hour before you want to go to sleep.

In this episode Tennison and Ginelle conversation centers around what living a LIFE UNDER GOD looks like, presented in the book 'WITH: Reimagining The Way You Relate to God' by Skye Jethani.  LIFE UNDER GOD seeks to control the world through religion; by manipulating God through rituals or morality. It's the idea of living under divine rule and following that rule for the sole purpose of avoiding calamity.  So when things go wrong or not as well as others we don't have favor with God or he is mad at us.  We live this because we fear being subject to the uncontrollable and the happenstances of life.

“LIFE UNDER, OVER, FROM, and FOR GOD each seeks to use God to achieve some other goal.

Join Tennison and Ginelle as they begin their new series Living With God.  This is a overview of the book 'WITH: Reimagining The Way You Relate to God' by Skye Jethani. In this series they take a look at the 5 postures, or ways Jethani says that we, as humans, relate to God. Under, Over, From, and For.  However God created us to live WITH him.

The Sage Sayers: My Wee Secrets on Small Talk

The Sage Sayers: My Wee Secrets on Small Talk

Some of the best and the brightest fret about small talk lately and I think I know why. Some started their jobs as remote workers having completed their studies in remote ways. Others must now return to work in the office after years of working from home. Meanwhile, few trust their colleagues and worry they’ll say something that might threaten  their livelihood. Overwork breeds fatigue, anxiety, and with that, a loss for words when forced to connect.

But we need not fret when it comes to small talk as some simple tactics can connect us in powerful ways. Reading from this week’s article on Medium, which you can find here. These tips I’ve cultivated over several years from backpacking through Asia solo, moving to new states, continents, and teaching live classes and workshops at universities and corporations.

Connect with me about your group's communication challenges via my LinkedIn profile and website. I'm taking bookings for coaching and training workshops to help build confidence, courage, and clarity in our written and spoken word. I'm all about us becoming braver communicators.
