    Right Against Jericho

Every one of us has a Jericho in our lives. Giving up or giving in is not the will of God. He desires to tear down the walls that hinder us from progressing in our walk. There are promises on the other side!

New to the scene: Meet Rebecca Kleinmann, jazz flutist, singer, composer, and educator

New to the scene: Meet Rebecca Kleinmann, jazz flutist, singer, composer, and educator

Jazz flutist Rebecca Kleinmann moved to the Triangle in February 2022 after more than 20 years in California, and a dozen in the Bay Area alone.

The internationally renowned musician joined Six Count to share about her first year in North Carolina after a busy year splitting time between both coasts. Her first 12 months included selling out her Durham debut show at the Sharp Nine Gallery; joining the women-led Brazilian band, Também; founding her own local Choro band, Noites Carolinas; reconnecting with her friend and colleague, Rahsaan Barber, a saxophonist and an assistant professor at the UNC Music Department; and her other collaborations with area musicians so far. (Rebecca and Rahsaan studied together in college under David Baker, a jazz trombonist and cellist who founded the jazz studies program at Indiana University.)

The flutist also shares about spontaneously launching her next recording project at the Festival Choro Jazz in Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil.

You can find Rebecca next at the Beyu Caffé in downtown Durham on Saturday, January 7, 20223 (the two shows are at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.). The musician is participating in the cafe’s winter live music series, curated by trumpet player Al Strong. Get tickets.

Rebecca received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as the first alumna to graduate from the jazz flute program. In addition to flute, Rebecca sings, composes, teaches, and paints. She’s also recently partnered with the Duke University Dance Program as an accompanist.

John Rommel, Part 2: American Classical Trumpet Player and Professor of Trumpet at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music

John Rommel, Part 2: American Classical Trumpet Player and Professor of Trumpet at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music

We continue our discussion about teaching with John talking about the importance of sound and concept along with the importance of singing. I then ask John about the question, should the school be there for the student, or should the student be there for the school (spoiler alert: John sees this as a black and white question!).  We talk about why so few great trumpet players are great musicians, and what the quality is that makes a great trumpet player a great musician.

John Rommel, Part 1: American Classical Trumpet Player and Professor of Trumpet at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music

John Rommel, Part 1: American Classical Trumpet Player and Professor of Trumpet at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music

John Rommel is Professor of Trumpet at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Early in his playing career he was a member of the Nashville Symphony and principal trumpet of the Louisville Orchestra, and recently he has performed with both the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony. He is also known as one of the premier teachers in the U.S., and it was a pleasure to speak with him in depth about his philosophy on teaching.

We begin our conversation with my asking John to talk about how both students and also his teaching have changed over the 30 years he has been at the Jacobs School of Music. Drawing on a wide variety of influences, from his lessons with Bill Adam to an interview with Hall of Fame football player Walter Peyton to John Wooden and his Pyramid of Success, John discusses the problems facing music students in universities today, and how a student can strive to move forward in spite of difficulties and struggles.

Not the (Speech) Chilling Effect We Think

Not the (Speech) Chilling Effect We Think

Host Kirsten Martin is joined by Suneal Bedi, an assistant professor of business law and ethics at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Suneal’s areas of expertise include intellectual property, marketing law/ethics, brand strategy, and the First Amendment. Holding a joint Ph.D. in marketing and Ph.D. in business ethics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania as well as a J.D. from Harvard Law School, he employs multiple methods in his research to answer business-relevant questions that sit at the intersection of law, marketing, and public policy.

Suneal came on the show to talk about a paper he recently published in the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology titled “The Myth of the Chilling Effect.”

He and Kirsten started by talking about how the First Amendment and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act—the provision that protects tech companies from being liable for user content posted on their platforms—are routinely misapplied in debates about content moderation on social media and elsewhere.

Suneal then explained the study he conducted where he asked participants to write negative reviews of dining experiences to test whether putting restrictions on what people can post online does in fact have what’s known as a “chilling effect,” or the consequence of deterring speech in unintended ways. He did find evidence of this effect, but not in terms of the substance of what people were saying; rather, it tended to make their tone slightly more positive. He and Kirsten also discussed how a lack of content moderation can have its own type of chilling effect by excluding marginalized groups who may not feel comfortable on the platform.

At the end of each episode, Kirsten asks for a recommendation about another scholar (or several) in tech ethics whose work our guest is particularly excited about. In addition to saying he’s interested in seeing what happens with Twitter in light of the Elon Musk news—a topic Kirsten has been quoted on widely in recent weeks, including in this story from CNN—Suneal cited the work of George Washington University’s Vikram Bhargava, the guest for the first episode of TEC Talks.

Daniel Perantoni, Part 1: Mr. P, The World's Tuba Hero!

Daniel Perantoni, Part 1: Mr. P, The World's Tuba Hero!

Dan Perantoni, also known as “Mr. P", is known throughout the world as one of the great tubists and in addition, one of the great teachers. I feel lucky to say he is a good friend, and as a composer I have written a number of pieces for him. So it was a real pleasure to have a conversation with him. At times we talked about specifics of playing and teaching while at other times we just had fun talking!

Although Dan is known mostly as a player for his solo and chamber playing, he has also had vast experience as an orchestral player. In Part 1 of our conversation, I ask Dan to first talk about his orchestral career. Dan then talks about his other experiences as a player, including playing with the Summit Brass, St. Louis Brass Quintet, and the Matteson-Phillips Jazz Quartet.
