Between Light, Space and Time.”

    Kevin Tufts

    Kevin Tufts

Kevin Tufts is the real deal when it comes to tech and design. With over two decades of experience working across a number of companies in the Bay Area — Lyft, SendGrid, and Twilio, to name a few — he’s now a product designer at Meta working on their Creation team. So believe me, we had a LOT to talk about.

Our conversation begin with a look at the current climate inside Meta (pre-Threads, FYI), and he gave some thoughts on where the company is going as it approaches its 20th anniversary. From there, Kevin talked about his path to becoming a product designer, and we took a trip down memory lane recalling the early days of web design and what it was like working during such rapidly changing times. He also spoke on what he loves about product design now, and how he wants to help the next generation of designers through mentorship.

Kevin’s secrets to success are simple: seize opportunities for growth where you can, embrace collaboration, and remain flexible. Now that’s something I think we could all take to heart!

He currently lives and works in Berlin, where he was a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. His studio now employs more than 40 people including  artists, architects, scientists, and technicians.

    Follow Ólafur’s work:

#96 "Sit & Spin and Physiologus" with artists, Sophi Kravitz + Jicky Schnee

#96 "Sit & Spin and Physiologus" with artists, Sophi Kravitz + Jicky Schnee

Sort of speechless about the body of work that these women have created. Enjoy!

Sophi Kravitz is an artist and electronic engineer who's always been fascinated with people, people she already knows and strangers alike. She believes that incorporating public art into a shared experience can be a strong conduit to the acceptance of the human next to you. She often collaborates as part of a larger collective as the construction of the work is highly technical, relying on the strength of both her background and love of bringing people together on collaborations. She believes in the simple magic of theatrical storytelling and works with classical sculpture, metal, code, and electronics to create beautiful playthings. Sophi shares her journey into making art and objects of play from her early childhood, to sculpture, electronic engineering, puppet making and most recently Hackaday, the company she now works for which serves up "Fresh Hacks Every Day" from around the Internet. Her previous collaborative art projects are inventive and impressive, and she shares how recently she's begun making them meaningful in a deeper way by considering visitors’ reaction to current events to create deeper thoughts about the human experience. Check out her website for the elaborate and inspiring list of art she co-created.

Jicky Schnee is a mother, artist, actor and model, who despite the many different forms that it takes, is seeking to depict and understand authenticity and purity through her art. Jicky shares about her mother really helped to move her forward in life and career by pushing her to NYC and to connect with a key photographer boosting her modeling career. Jicky lost her mother when she was just 25 so we speak a bit about the uniqueness of the mother/daughter relationship and how she healed from the deep grief of losing her mother. Jicky's interest in authenticity surfaces in many ways including our conversation about social media and the selfie phenomenon which seemingly places value on how people view us rather than how we value who and what we are. This aligns with Jicky's new-ish appreciation of Crone Culture vs. Youth Culture, and she's choosing to see and value the wisdom of those who've come before her over the priorities and actions of the youth which so often manifests in social media. We squeeze a lot into this hour including the physical and psychological challenges of acting, working with and admiring Joaquin Phoenix, studying psychology, raising daughters, and wanting to experience "the other side," see her "Physiologus" work for reference.

There's just not enough time in a two hour show I say! Hopefully these ladies will come back again. We have some unfinished conversation to be had.

Episode 137: Karrie Hovey - An Artist's view

On this week's episode of Animal Instinct, Celia is joined by sculptor, installation artist, and painter Karrie Hovey. Karrie grew up in the Northeast Kingdom, a rural area in northern Vermont. There she developed an appreciation of the natural world and a respect for the environment. This is also where she learned many of the hand-craft and construction techniques that are present in her current installations and paintings. On today's show she talks about some of her installations and how animals inspire her to create her work.

She is Fierce: The Art of Joyce Cutler-Shaw
“She is Fierce: The Art of Joyce Cutler-Shaw” is an exploration of the multimedia artist’s expansive and diverse body of work, featuring commentary from colleagues and an in-depth interview with Cutler-Shaw. Throughout her long career the art of Joyce Cutler-Shaw has taken on a wide spectrum of forms, from melting iconic “ice words” and reflective light sculptures to installations and public commissions to intricately drawn depictions of the human form. Her subjects are human identity and the natural world; her themes are evolution and survival - from reptile into bird, from mammal to human, and from human, perhaps, to humane. But always at her art’s core, according to Cutler-Shaw, is her use of drawing “as a way of knowing, as a mode of inquiry, as a visual language.” Her “word images” have been central motifs, informing her works from the outset. Culter-Shaw’s works are exhibited in museums and library collections worldwide. Series: "Portrait of the Artist" [Arts and Music] [Show ID: 31162]
