San Diego Deputy District Attorney Ryan Karkenny, a member of the Computer and Technology Crime Hight-Tech Task Force (CATCH) joins the podcast to discuss ransomware attacks, internet scams, the dark web, cryptocurrency, and how to protect yourself using digital hygiene.

Each episode we examine the laws on the books; three are real, one is fake. Can you guess which court ruling is the fake?

1. In Michigan, an appellate court upheld the trial court’s admission of Facebook posts in a gang murder case, saying “there is nothing on the face of the posts that would suggest that they were faked or hacked.”
2. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the FBI’s monitoring of a dark web child porn website called “Playpen”, saying “the notion that innocent users would be on Playpen is hardly plausible.”
3. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the child pornography conviction of the defendant and said although the agent’s laptop was infected with malware, the defendant “presented no evidence in support of his theory that ransomware on the agent’s laptop planted child pornography on the defendant’s laptop.”
4. In Washington, an appellate court ruled that Bitcoin is a financial asset for purposes of state tax law, saying “Although virtual currencies such as Bitcoin do not generate cash flow for those who hold it, they are no different than other currencies which are considered financial assets."

Das Firmenkonglomerat Megacorp. versammelt bereits 1000 Firmen aus den verschiedensten Businesssegmenten. Jedoch haben sie alle denselben Nutzen: Sie werden von InternetbetrügerInnen für Phishing Attacken benutzt oder um sogenannte scam stories zu unterstützen.

Megacorp. nennt sich das neueste Kunstprojekt des KünstlerInnenkollektivs KairUs, den diesjährigen KuratorInnen des Radical Research Labs. Mit „Behind the Smart World“ starteten die KünstlerInnen Linda Kronman und Andreas Zingerle einen längeren künstlerischen Forschungsprozess rund um die Themen Datamining, Private Data sowie Datensicherheit. Nun arbeiten sie an einer abschließenden Publikation zum Themenkomplex, im Rahmen dessen auch das neue Kunstprojekt Megacorp. erstmals in Graz beim Steirischen Herbstpräsentiert wurde.

Im Interview mit den beiden erläutern wir noch einmal im Detail und anschließend an vorherige Sendungen wie Internetbetrug funktioniert und mithilfe welcher Tools er sich identifizieren lässt.

Über Private Daten, Internetbetrug und Crypto wars

In dieser Ausgabe von TELEX sprechen wir über das aktuelle künstlerische Jahresprojekt von servus.at, das in Kollaboration mit dem KünstlerInnenkollektiv KairUs stattfindet.
Die Arbeit des KünstlerInnenkollektivs KairUs kreiste in den letzten Jahren vor allem um ein großes Thema: den Internetbetrug oder eben internet scam . Dazu entstanden mehrere Arbeiten mit ganz unterschiedlichem künstlerischen Ansatz. In diesem Jahr betreiben Linda Kronman und Andreas Zingerle, die beiden MedienkünstlerInnen hinter KairUs, das AMRO Research Lab. „Behind the smart World“ ist dabei der Titel ihres ersten Forschungslabors. Details hört ihr in einem Interview mit den beiden.

Weiters spricht Peter Wagenhuber von servus.at über die aktuelle Diskussion um die Einführung eines Verschlüsselungsverbots.
