Why does the US act as Israel’s lawyer? | The Bottom Line

Why does the US act as Israel’s lawyer? | The Bottom Line
President Joe Biden’s failure to demonstrate the same regard and sympathy for Palestinian suffering as he has shown Israel has turned the United States into “Israel’s lawyer,” says former US State Department official Aaron David Miller.

Miller tells host Steve Clemons that Israel has lost the Western perception of being David in the story of “David v Goliath,” and its image will be further damaged the more its people veer to the right.

US officials “don't have any better answers right now than the Israelis do”, Miller says, adding that there will be no “open breach” in relations with the Netanyahu government.

Brazil's Lula: Biden has no 'sensitivity' to stop war on Gaza | Talk to Al Jazeera

Brazil's Lula: Biden has no 'sensitivity' to stop war on Gaza | Talk to Al Jazeera
Brazil, renowned for its cultural diversity and vast rainforests, is experiencing significant political transformation.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s return to power marked a departure from Jair Bolsonaro’s conservative government. This shift heralds a renewed focus on social welfare, poverty reduction, and inclusive growth, mirroring Lula’s previous term in the 2000s.

However, Brazil’s journey is mired in global challenges, from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to the war on Gaza. These issues raise important questions about Brazil’s role and position as a major global economy.

We explore these complexities as Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva talks to Al Jazeera.

US General Petraeus: Israel's war on Gaza to last for ‘months, not weeks’ | The Bottom Line

US General Petraeus: Israel's war on Gaza to last for ‘months, not weeks’ | The Bottom Line
Israel has not explained what it seeks to accomplish in its war on Gaza beyond the destruction of Hamas, according to US General David Petraeus, the former director of the CIA and former commander of US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Petraeus tells host Steve Clemons that the US has no choice but to remain a “steadfast ally” of Israel, lest China and other countries point to Washington’s abandonment of its friends.

In this wide-ranging conversation, the former CENTCOM commander added that “there are no hands going up in the region” to volunteer to manage Gaza after the war.

Ex-UN official: Palestine-Israel two-state solution 'a joke’ at UN | Talk to Al Jazeera
As the war on Gaza escalates, the United Nations’ stark divisions delayed a resolution for three weeks.

Senior human rights official Craig Mokhiber resigned, protesting against the UN’s silence on the "wholesale slaughter of the Palestinian people" by the Israeli army. In his resignation, Mokhiber criticised the UN’s inaction in the face of “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.

With Israel’s war on Gaza intensifying, Craig Mokhiber, the former director of the New York office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, talks to Al Jazeera.

Episode 8: Championing Change and Peace - A Dialogue with Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee

Episode 8: Championing Change and Peace - A Dialogue with Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee

From the tumultuous regions of Israel and Palestine to the terrains of Rwanda and Nepal, women are driving the fight for peace using innovative tactics. As we grapple with a violent world, how do we tap into our collective humanity? To gain some insight, we turn to those who have been tireless - and successful - in their fight for justice.

Leymah Gbowee shares how her upbringing, where she was taught the significance of education and standing up for her beliefs, paved the way for her to become a beacon of hope and change. From her youth as a spirited high school senator to a globally recognized peace activist and 2011 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, she demonstrates the formidable power of the human spirit and the immense potential of women in championing human rights and equity. Together we journey through the cataclysmic impacts of war, with unique emphasis on the pivotal role of women in bidding peace. We discuss the Second Liberian Civil War, the displacement it wrought, and the residual trauma that survivors grapple with. Despite these daunting realities, the spotlight remains on the unyielding courage of Leymah and the women who stood by her, protesting against the war - a testament to the potency of active nonviolence in instigating meaningful change.

A full video of Leymah's talk can be found here.

The occupation of Palestine intensifies | The Listening Post

The occupation of Palestine intensifies | The Listening Post
Under a new, ultra-nationalist Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, violence in the occupied Palestinian territories has been escalating at an alarming rate.

But the continuing human rights abuses, including the theft of Palestinian land to pave the way for Jewish settlers, are not portrayed as such in the Israeli news media. They either ignore the brutality of the occupation or present a military-friendly version of the story - and neither option is good enough for the Israeli government, which has voices of dissent in its crosshairs.

Lost in translation: How texts change as they travel:
The translation of literature, from one language to another, is tricky business - it’s much more subtle than journalism, less direct. When it comes to Arabic and Persian, literature from the Middle East, translations have been known to come up short, leading to cultural misunderstandings. The kind of misunderstandings that reading the books of the “other” is supposed to correct. Producer Tariq Nafi looks at what gets lost in translation.

The U.S.-Israeli Relationship With Ambassador Thomas R. Nides

The U.S.-Israeli Relationship With Ambassador Thomas R. Nides

In recent weeks, terror attacks in Israel and operations launched by the Israeli Defense Forces have claimed the lives of more than thirty Palestinians and Israelis. Israeli police have also clashed with Palestinians on the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

This escalation is occurring at a critical moment for the region as negotiations to revive the Iran nuclear deal have stalled, raising the prospects of an Israeli-Iranian confrontation over Tehran’s nuclear program. Preoccupied with Russia and Ukraine, how is the Biden administration tackling the challenges of both the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Iran nuclear issue?

Aaron David Miller sits down with Thomas Nides, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the future of the Iran nuclear deal, and the U.S.-Israel relationship.

Ikrima Sabri: 'Al-Aqsa is for Muslims by God's will' | Talk to Al Jazeera
Jerusalem, Holy Land for Muslims, Christians and Jews, has seen conflict almost since its inception around the Bronze Age; it's been attacked, captured, recaptured, besieged, destroyed and rebuilt time and again.

Yet, the walls of this iconic place, beloved by all Abrahamic faiths, remain standing, enclosing invaluable heritage sites for millions of people worldwide.

But the golden Dome of the Rock is often seen in pictures surrounded by one of the world's most enduring struggles, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Why is the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound a constant hotspot for tensions? Ikrima Sabri, former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, talks to Al Jazeera.

The History of Israel-Palestine: In Search of a Common Narrative (NEW SERIES)

How has genetic evidence been used both positively and negatively in the discourse of coexistence and in understanding the conflict? What are the ways that we can use narratives of common ancestry to promote coexistence?

Over the last 20 years, many scientific publications have come out showing a significant level of common ancestry between Jewish and Palestinian people. In this episode we will discuss what narratives we communicate to explain what this means, and look for a common narrative that fits the data.
