In this episode, we’re digging into the music of Eighth Tower Records, a record label that focuses on “dark music and fiction.” We selected albums that were inspired by influential horror artists, Zdzisław Beksiński and Lucio Fulci. While they worked with very different mediums their art shares a similar abstract nightmare aesthetic and pessimistic worldview. Consequently, the albums inspired by their work are equally haunting and evocative.

    Music Discussed

Decay, Death and Darkness - Aural visions of Beksiński's art by Various Artists
The Beyond - Music Inspired By The Lucio Fulci Death Trilogy by Various Artists

    L'avventura [1960]

Jackie and Greg get into the moodiest film about an affair ever made, Michelangelo Antonioni's L'AVVENTURA from 1960. Topics of discussion include the film's use of negative space, how Monica Vitti is more than just a pretty face, why movies about sad rich people are always compelling, and how Antonioni is responsible for creating a new film grammar.

    A Bay of Blood

    A Bay of Blood

In the season one finale, Genre Fans Joe and Katie wrap up their giallo run with a discussion of whether Mario Bava's A Bay of Blood (1971) is "Definitely," "Kinda," or "Not Really" a giallo. During our absence, please explore our back catalogue (if you haven't already), and check out our visual essays on YouTube linked below.

    15. The Case of the Scorpion's Tail

    15. The Case of the Scorpion's Tail

The coats are chasing tails and cracking cases in Sergio Martino's 1971 giallo: "The Case of the Scorpion's Tail". A jet-set giallo with $1 million on the line, after a widow tries to cash in on her husband's death in a tragic plane accident; naturally, bodies begin piling up. The second giallo by Martino the coats have covered. With a cast of giallo regulars and a screenplay by the humble Ernesto Gastaldi, will this cement Martino as the 4th head on the Mt. Rushmore of giallo? Or will the coats need more coaxing? Listen now!

    Michelangelo Antonioni's 'L'avventura' (1960)

In 1960, Michelangelo Antonioni released "L'avventura," a film that would make him world-famous and that would change cinema forever. Antonioni was crucial in elevating cinema to an art form and expanding the language of film by constructing a deeply visual style that would influence filmmakers for decades to come. In this episode, I talk about the mysterious power of "L'avventura," why it has haunted me for years, and why it matters so much.
