Missing Mom’s Sunday Sauce with Gary Schiro

Missing Mom’s Sunday Sauce with Gary Schiro

Gary Schiro had made plenty of his mother’s recipes, but one Sunday morning-not long after his mother passed away-an attempt to make her traditional meatballs and sauce went wrong. Gary wished he could have called her. He wished that he had asked her how to make the recipe properly. Despite having seen her make it 900 times, he never did. This episode takes a look at time-honored family traditions, examines unanswered questions, and is an attempt to reconcile feelings of regret. Plus, a cookalong with Gary goes to show that you can make any family recipe your own without sacrificing meaning, comfort, or deliciousness.

If you’re hungry for more of this story, you can read the original essay “The Sunday Sauce I Watched Mom Make 900 Times, but Didn’t Learn Until She Was Gone,” and find the accompanying recipe published by Food52.

My Family Recipe is created by the Food52 Podcast Network and Heritage Radio Network, inspired by the eponymous Food52 column.

Style & Purpose with Claudia Cusano, Writer and Editor in Chief at NUVO Magazine

Style & Purpose with Claudia Cusano, Writer and Editor in Chief at NUVO Magazine

Claudia Cusano is the writer and Editor-in-Chief of the award-winning NUVO Magazine. NUVO combines style and purpose, profiling people, fashion, design, travel, architecture and more. Founded by Claudia’s father in 1998, NUVO is a family enterprise. They approach luxury from a place of style and appreciation – not monetary value.

After Claudia graduated from UBC with a degree in sociology, she travelled to Italy, taking time off to figure out her next steps. Her father called and asked her to run his new magazine. She promptly hung up the phone. In 1999, she relented – happily – joining her father, first as a receptionist, working her way up to where she is now: curating and writing evocative, entertaining and informative stories.

Take time for yourself and do what you love – and everything will still get done. That is our biggest takeaway from this beautiful, Tuscan-infused episode. Claudia and her family are currently living the expat life in Italy, their stay extended by Covid. They’ve settled into a routine of course, but Claudia still greets each day with anticipation, always finding something to marvel at in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance and modern fashion, home to gothic architecture and renowned cuisine – la vera Italia.

Millie founder Chelsea and Claudia discuss some of the finer points of living in Italy (never cook with basil in November!), keeping a magazine alive through Covid, the importance of celebrating and prioritizing craftsmanship and skill, working her way up from receptionist to editor-in-chief of NUVO, and so much more.

Read NUVO Magazine, Canada's authority on all thing's  exceptional and follow along Claudia's Tuscan journey @Claudia.cusano.

Last year, he and chef Chris Spear of Perfect Little Bites did a pop-up dinner in downtown Washington D.C that focused on homemade pasta.

The Good Life at La Tavola Marche - In Conversation with Ashley Bartner

The Good Life at La Tavola Marche - In Conversation with Ashley Bartner

    Welcome to Episode #12:

We kick off Season 2 with a wonderful conversation with the delightful Ashley Bartner of
La Tavola Marche, a Cooking School, Farm and Agriturismo in Italy.

Ashley and her husband Jason moved to Italy thirteen years ago from New York with a plan to create their own business off the beaten track in the region of Le Marche.  With a big dream in their back pocket and hearts full of enthusiasm they both ventured into the world of farm life, cooking schools and the Italian Lifestyle.

It wasn't without its trials and tribulations (whatever good thing ever is?) and that is a testament to their ability to keep moving forward no matter what the universe threw their way.

I loved this conversation for a bunch of reasons.  Not only is Ashley full of heart and zest for life but she is a generous person who not only loves what she does but shares it in spades in this conversation and in life.

Ashley and Jason have pooled their talents to create a successful business and a hands on experience for the travelers who come from around the world to participate in their workshops and the region of the Le Marche.... the place they call home.
