    Episode 123: The Blackout Ripper

    Episode 123: The Blackout Ripper

In 1942, the citizens of London had to adhere to strict blackout regulations to aid in stopping enemy aircraft from hitting their targets.  This left the citizens vulnerable to criminals lurking in the dark.  From February 8 to February 16, a sadistic killer murdered four women, and attacked two others.  The main suspect was a charming, married, 28 year old officer in the Royal Air Force. To this day many questions remain about Gordon Frederick Cummins, the man identified as the Blackout Ripper. Perhaps you can figure it out.

Best English Language Foreign Film: The Ruling Class

This is the second film by Peter Medak we've reviewed for the podcast, and this blows the other one out of the water. An upper class aristocrat inherits his family's peerage, despite having schizophrenia. A completely unchained Peter O'Toole lights up the screen and fills every frame with insanity.

    H. H. Holmes

If you are ever in Philadelphia, perhaps you could attempt to find 1316 Callowhill St., this use to be the address of a patent office, owned by H.H. Holmes and his partner Ben Pitezel, the elusive address is now a parking lot which stretches the length of an entire city block.  Just across the road stands the North American Building, but there use to be a station servicing the Philadelphia and Reading Railroads.

Just down the road is the building which holds The Philadelphia Inquirer, the very paper which covered all of the salacious news stories during the time of H.H. Holmes.

This is an odd piece of a neighborhood now, filled mostly with abandoned buildings, an area tucked between Chinatown and the poverty-stricken portion of North Philadelphia. But when H.H. Holmes wandered these streets, the city was very different.

    Australia's Jack The Ripper

    Australia's Jack The Ripper

It’s 1888, and a man who will become perhaps the most infamous serial killer in history is terrorising the streets of London.

Fog rises from the damp streets of the Whitechapel district, a largely impoverished area, which has earned itself a reputation for being a cauldron of immorality. Poverty, racism, hundreds of lodging houses which function as brothels, and social unrest mean that the slums in the East End of London have already earned themselves a reputation.

It’s September 10, and five killings have taken place within one and a half kilometres of each other, in just over a month. All the victims are women. The culprit is known as Jack the Ripper, because of the horrifically brutal nature of his violent crimes.

A number of letters were sent from a man claiming to be the killer, taunting police and journalists. One of the letters purported to have been sent from hell.

To this day, the killer’s identity is unknown.

But there’s a theory that he might have been a man named Fredrick Deeming. A man who eventually, ended up in Australia.

Crossed Sword Sticks - Dr Thomas Bond and Jack the Ripper, #8 of 100 Bloody Objects

Crossed Sword Sticks - Dr Thomas Bond and Jack the Ripper, #8 of 100 Bloody Objects

Jack the Ripper has dominated the consciousness of the British public and crime fiction since the Victorian era.  In late 1888, 5 gruesome murders occurred in London’s Whitechapel and the legend of the Ripper was born.  The man on his trail was the surgeon and pathologist Thomas Bond, an expert in forensics and the medical detective who wrote the world’s first criminal profile.

Mary Ann Nichols (found August 31, 1888), Annie Chapman (found September 8, 1888), Elizabeth Stride (found September 30, 1888), Catherine Eddowes (also found September 30, 1888), and Mary Jane Kelly (found November 9, 1888).  These women were the tragic victims of these appalling crimes.

This was the beginning of serious pathology and the initial steps into unravelling the minds and behaviour of criminals and killers.  Thomas Bond was a classic Victorian, a man who had been at the front during the Austro-Prussian war, who prided himself on riding to hounds with every hunt in England and whose suggested cure for depression was a pint of burgundy and a pint of champagne on alternative days of the week.  His was a world of grime discoveries and Holmesian like sleuthing.  Yet time, injury and the dark aspects of his work were to take their toll.  Bond became a laudanum addict and in 1901 threw himself to his death.  His pioneering work laid the foundation for police forensics and offender profiling today.

    3. Jack the Tipper: Philanthropy in Whitechapel

Whitechapel, a town wreaking of sin and poverty, suffered under the weight of five gruesome murders at the end of 1888. One man rose from the darkness to save Whitechapel from the pits of despair with his fistfuls of cash: good-old Jack the Tipper.

Today we ask, “What if Jack the Ripper, instead of committing a series of murders in Whitechapel, turned his attention towards philanthropy?”

Cody discusses social reform in Whitechapel after the murders. Colin dishes on the dark side of philanthropy.

H.G. Wells - Crypt of Creators (The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, Time After Time)

We debut the Crypt of Creators, by snatching Herbert George right out of his time travelling adventures! We begin by discussing adaptations of two of his most famous works. First up, the Martian invasion is a go! Orson Welles causes a stir and PERHAPS mass hysteria, in his radio adaptation of one of H.G.'s most celebrated pieces of science fiction, when a cylindrical ship crashes in Grovers Mill, New Jersey in 1938. Then, those same troublesome invaders crash-land in small-town California (and all over the world) in the special effects spectacular, The War of the Worlds (1953). Wells himself, then creates his own device to explore the distant future of the year 802,701, in the George Pal produced and directed, The Time Machine (1960). And then from there, we take a little trip with Mr. Wells, as he uses keen detective skills to track down Jack the Ripper, who has used the time machine to escape into modern day 1979, in Time After Time (1979)!

MYSTERY: This week we go back to the root of it all: unsolved mysteries! After a rant about current cartoons, we run through the alleys of 1800's London in search Jack The Ripper, one of the most prolific serial killers to this day. We then take a flight to the 70's and have a seat next to infamous hijacker D.B. Cooper and see what he's been up to.
