    Odcinek 9: Showdown 1984

Gene Smith: Hoya Paranoia (Former Georgetown Team Captain & NCAA Champion)

Gene Smith: Hoya Paranoia (Former Georgetown Team Captain & NCAA Champion)

True hoop fanatics will understand the beauty of this one. We got the captain from that 1984 Georgetown Hoya championship team. Gene Smith takes the time and shares his experiences and damn is it a good one.

Gene Smith was a defensive nightmare for opposing teams. His motor was relentless and he had an incredible ability to beat guys to a spot, sacrifice his body for a charge, dive on every loose ball, and he just never seemed to go away. He was a key part to Georgetown’s success and earned the team captain role on a championship team that featured Patrick Ewing, David Wingate, Reggie Williams, Michael Jackson and other future NBA players. He went on to be drafted in the 5th round (1st pick, 94th overall) by the Pacers in that historic 1984 NBA Draft.  Gene shares great stories about Patrick Ewing, Coach John Thompson, Michael Jordan, Pearl Washington, James Worthy, Hoya Paranoia, his podcast Hoya Locker Room and MUCH more.

We can’t thank Gene enough for his time and being so real with us. His stories were incredible and we know that all hoop fans will appreciate this one. This was a special one for Zach as he has a deep appreciation for Gene’s game, his motor, and his leadership. We hope our listeners get a feel for the importance of his role on that team and the Georgetown Program after listening to this one.

    Thank you Gene Smith!

Coach Matt Doherty - Teammate of Michael Jordan | Coach | Champion | Author | Mentor

Coach Matt Doherty - Teammate of Michael Jordan | Coach | Champion | Author | Mentor

Matt Doherty played and coached basketball at the University of North Carolina. He started on the 1982 National Championship team coached by the legendary Dean Smith while playing alongside NBA stars Michael Jordan and James Worthy. He went on to a successful career in coaching. First as an assistant coach at Davidson and then at Kansas. In 1999, he was named head coach at the University of Notre Dame which for an Irish Catholic kid from Long Island was an incredible opportunity. One with which he anticipated would last a long time. However, in June 2000, Bill Guthridge, then head coach at UNC decided to retire and Roy Williams was expected to replace him. When Williams turned down the opportunity, UNC turned their attention to Matt Doherty and with the help of Michael Jordan, Dean Smith recruited him to come “home” as the head coach of the UNC Tar Heels.

In 2001, UNC won the ACC Regular Season Championship and Doherty was voted 2001 AP National Coach of the Year. Two short years later, he was forced to resign from his dream job.

What went wrong? Why did this happen? How do you go from reaching the top of the mountain to falling off the cliff? How do you prepare for your next opportunity? You Rebound!

Matt Doherty: NCAA Champion, Coach & Author

Matt Doherty: NCAA Champion, Coach & Author

It’s the middle of March Madness and what better guest to have on the show than someone who has experienced the tournament both as a player and a coach? Matt Doherty is in the house today and it’s an honor to have him! In this episode we discuss his experiences as a player, a coach, and also his book Rebound: From Pain to Passion

Doherty was a key member of those UNC teams that included winning the 1982 National Championship on a team featuring Sam Perkins, James Worthy, Michael Jordan, and legendary coach Dean Smith. He was then drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 6th round of the 1984 NBA Draft. He later continued his basketball journey as a coach that included stops with Notre Dame, FAU, SMU, and his Alma Mater North Carolina Tar Heels. This episode is a special one, especially for all of you current or aspiring coaches out there. You will get a preview of some of the valuable lessons included in his book as well as an idea of the time and effort he put in to writing it.

We are very honored for the opportunity to learn from Coach Doherty today. This is a conversation that we feel will better you as a person, player, coach and a leader. We know you will enjoy this one just as much as we did, and it is just a small sample size of what you will read about in his book so be sure to check it out!
