Gene Smith: Hoya Paranoia (Former Georgetown Team Captain & NCAA Champion)

Gene Smith: Hoya Paranoia (Former Georgetown Team Captain & NCAA Champion)

True hoop fanatics will understand the beauty of this one. We got the captain from that 1984 Georgetown Hoya championship team. Gene Smith takes the time and shares his experiences and damn is it a good one.

Gene Smith was a defensive nightmare for opposing teams. His motor was relentless and he had an incredible ability to beat guys to a spot, sacrifice his body for a charge, dive on every loose ball, and he just never seemed to go away. He was a key part to Georgetown’s success and earned the team captain role on a championship team that featured Patrick Ewing, David Wingate, Reggie Williams, Michael Jackson and other future NBA players. He went on to be drafted in the 5th round (1st pick, 94th overall) by the Pacers in that historic 1984 NBA Draft.  Gene shares great stories about Patrick Ewing, Coach John Thompson, Michael Jordan, Pearl Washington, James Worthy, Hoya Paranoia, his podcast Hoya Locker Room and MUCH more.

We can’t thank Gene enough for his time and being so real with us. His stories were incredible and we know that all hoop fans will appreciate this one. This was a special one for Zach as he has a deep appreciation for Gene’s game, his motor, and his leadership. We hope our listeners get a feel for the importance of his role on that team and the Georgetown Program after listening to this one.

    Thank you Gene Smith!

Four Must Read Books for Data and Analytics Leaders with Randy Bean, John Thompson, Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic, and Doug Laney

Four Must Read Books for Data and Analytics Leaders with Randy Bean, John Thompson, Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic, and Doug Laney

As we wrap up Season 2 of the Data Chief Podcast, It’s time to once again thank all of our listeners for tuning in and sending Cindi your ideas, and to all of our awesome guests who willingly shared their time and insights along the way.

This season The Data Chief shared stories such as Sol Rashidi, CAO Estèe Lauder Companies, about how she starts every day by reading for an hour.  Or from Season one, Alberto Rey Villaverdo, Executive Director of Advanced Analytics at VirginMedia, about how he reads an hour or more every single day. It’s those stories that have inspired this special end-of-season episode.

In this podcast, Cindi is joined by four distinct authors with must-read books, two new that are new to bookshelves, and two that are time-tested. Be sure to check out the companion blog on thedatachief.com for other books Cindi recommends as well.

In this episode you’ll hear from

    Key Takeaways

    • From Randy Bean, Developing a data culture is an ongoing process: Becoming data-driven or developing a data culture is not a destination, it's an ongoing process that never truly ends. In fact, the most sophisticated data companies are often the most worried about how they’re doing. This mindset of continued iteration and improvement is what fuels innovation. When you feel like you have it all figured out, think again.
    • From John Thompson, When building an analytics team, hybrid models deliver the best of both worlds: Although more complex than other organizational models, hybrid data teams allow you to meet the needs of your business in a faster, more scalable, and more effective way. How? At any given time, high-volume data professionals will be focused on repetitive tasks like data acquisition, data integration, feature engineering, modeling, and feeding data objects up the chain, while artisanal data scientists directly interface with the subject matter experts embedded across various lines of business.
    • From Cole Knussbaumer Knaflic, Shape data stories with your audience in mind: When presenting data, it’s important to understand who your audience is. What do they care about? How will this information impact them? What action should they take after receiving it? Tailoring your data story to them and building a narrative arc that takes them along for the journey is key to creating the kinds of a-ha moments that stick.
    • From Doug Laney, Data monetization requires innovative thinking: For many organizations, the value of their data outweighs the value of the rest of their business. Instead of focusing on the limitations of regulations like GDPR or HIPPA when going to monetize it, try to think outside the box. Can your data help you develop a new product or service? Can it forge a partner relationship? Can you sell a derivative of it? The possibilities are limitless.

    Alonzo Mourning

    Alonzo Mourning

He don’t need no introduction. The one and only Alonzooooooo Mourning punched in with the Knuckleheads for this week’s episode! You know it’s gonna be a special one when the OG decides to pull up. The guys ask Zo to take it back to his high school days, playing ball as the No. 1 recruit in the country. Zo remembers the parade of college coaches coming to his house, and how John Thompson asked to be the last coach to visit. Zo says it was Thompson who made the best offer — which was no promise of a starting position, but the chance to work hard, be part of greatness and get an excellent education. Zo talks about the special bond he had with Big John, and all the things that made the Georgetown coach a legend to everyone who knew him. He also speaks on watching Dikembe Mutombo grow into himself as a basketball player — and the hilarious nicknames Thomson bestowed on Dikembe and Zo: Africa and Motherf*****!  Zo looks back on getting drafted and what it meant to shake David Stern’s hand. He goes deep on the notorious Heat/Knicks beef, and how it’s all Pat Riley’s fault for implementing the same fierce DNA in both franchises. Zo literally marked X’s on the calendar for all those matchups. Darius asks why Zo’s 1,000th block had to be on him! Zo even sent D Miles a framed picture of it afterward, as a memento. They tell some stories from the famous Zo’s Summer Groove. Then Zo looks back on his championship season, and gets real about just how tough he was on his teammates in order to win. How he really never knew they respected his toughness until Shaq asked Zo to present at his Hall of Fame induction. That meant a lot. Game respects game. And everybody’s got respect for the OG, Alonzo Mourning. Tune in to hear everything from the Miami legend himself.

Episode 105 - John Thompson, Analytics Leader & Best Selling Author

Vancouver Tech Podcast with John Thompson

John Thompson, Analytics Leader & Best Selling Author, Keynote Speaker, Data Science Thought Leader.

John Thompson, Global Head, Advanced Analytics & Artificial Intelligence at CSL Behring. Author of Building Analytics Teams: Harnessing analytics and artificial intelligence for business improvement, and Analytics: How to Win with Intelligence joins hosts Lauren Bates and Drew Ogryzek for episode 105 of the Vancouver Tech Podcast.

Thompson explains that he started writing his latest book, Building Analytics Teams: Harnessing analytics and artificial intelligence for business improvement, or at least thinking about it last year. He asked people how they felt about their analytics teams, the people on them, and the cohesion, and those kind of topics, at a few presentations in Chicago and other places around the United States. The incredible responses he received prompted him to stop working on a book he had started regarding AI and Ethics, and pivot to the topics addressed in Building Analytics Teams.

This book is for people who are hiring and managing high performance advanced analytics and AI teams. So, if you're a manager and you're responsible for a data science team, this book was written for you.

Dikembe Mutombo | Stay Yo A** at Home w/ Knuckleheads

Dikembe Mutombo | Stay Yo A** at Home w/ Knuckleheads

Y’all. This might be the best interview we’ve ever done. Not bragging. Just facts. The Big OG. Mr. No-No-No Dikembe Mutombo rolls up on Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles. The Hall of Famer has a story so unbelievable it has to be true. Hear how he went from the Congo to Georgetown on an academic scholarship. How coach John Thompson found him at school and invited him to practice with Alonzo Mourning’s squad. And how Dikembe got extra reps playing intramural ball — yes, intramural ball, dunking on everyday students. We hear about his record-breaking first big game in college, his summer battles with Zo and Patrick Ewing, and his decision to go pro. You learn how Bill Russell shaped his mind. And why the story about Jordan dunking on Dik was seven years in the making — and how Mutombo never hears the end of it. We hear about just how cold the business of the NBA really is. Why Atlanta was heaven for a Black Congolese. And the story behind Adidas’s Mt. Mutombo basketball shoe. Just like the big man himself, there’s so much here. Mutombo built an entire hospital to honor his mother. Now he’s building an entire school. It’s a personal look at the career of one of the best defenders ever to play the game. Y’all be shaking your heads with amazement and laughing with pure joy during this one. We’re closing out quarantine season with the larger-than-life legend, Dikembe Mutombo. Swat that shot. Wag that finger. Tune in.
