JONNY CUBA & FRIENDS Episode 4 "What's Beneath The Bottom Of The Glass" with OLLIE TEEBA (of The Herbaliser)

On Episode 4 of JONNY CUBA & FRIENDS, Jonny welcomes longtime collaborator and one-half of the dynamic duo The Herbaliser, Mr. OLLIE TEEBA.  Ollie is also part of Jonny's Hip Hop supergroup Soundsci, with Audessey (ex-Mass Influence), U-George (The Hemisphere), Strong Island's Oxygen, and legendary UK Hip Hop engineer 'No Sleep' Nigel.

Ollie's group The Herbaliser have become an English jazz hip-hop global phenomenon, formed with Jake Woo aka Jake Wherry in West London during the early 1990s, originally inspired by a shared passion for hip-hop, rare groove, funk and jazz. and their youthful heroes James Brown, DJ Premier, Lalo Schifrin, David Axelrod and Serge Gainsbourg, among many others.

Although currently releasing on their own label and having previously been signed to !K7 Records, they were one of the best-known acts from the Ninja Tune stable of '90s power players.  They have released 12 albums, including two DJ mixes: one for Ninja Tune's Solid Steel series and the other for Fabric's Live Mix series. The Herbaliser's album Same As It Never Was was their first release on !K7 Records. Their last album Bring Out The Sound was released in 2018, on the BBE label.

    White Men Can't Jump (1992)

    White Men Can't Jump (1992)

Thirty years ago, writer/director Ron Shelton followed up his classic baseball comedy Bull Durham with this buddy comedy/romantic comedy set in the world of street basketball around Los Angeles.  It stars Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson as two basketball hustlers who end hustling each other on the courts…..along with teaming up to hustle others.  Every one just shines in this movie including Rosie Perez in a star-making performance as Woody’s girlfriend….and there’s even a special cameo from the late, great Alex Trebek along the way!

Frank X. Walker on Poetry's Urgent Intimacy

Frank X. Walker on Poetry's Urgent Intimacy
When was the last time an artist took you by the hand and said, “Here, let me show you how the world looks through my eyes”? Frank X. Walker is Kentucky’s former poet laureate and one of the co-founders of the Affrilachian Poets - a grassroots group of poets of color living in the Appalachian region. Thirty years after their founding, the Affrilachian Poets continue to dismantle the idea that Appalachia is a white region, devoid of literature and the arts. For decades, Frank’s work has embodied a deeply personal approach and challenged us to see poetry as an urgent voice that can touch on our experience of living in a way other written works can’t. Today, Frank is the Director of the MFA program of the University of Kentucky and he’s mentored hundreds of artists along their path. He’s the author and editor of a dozen books of poetry and, as you’ll hear, Frank is a lovely, thoughtful, and really cool guy.
