    Summer Slash: Baskin

    Summer Slash: Baskin

    What’s new? Let’s see...

Seth Rogen was brought in to write jokes a last ditch effort to save RDJ’s Doctor Dolittle, which did little to save that dumpster fire when it hit cinemas with dragon farts, some obscure British filmmaker named Alan Parker died and Dave has to tell us what films he did and what films he did that we should like such as Road To Wellville about that nut Dr. Kellogg who invented corn flakes and promoted circumcisions as a cure to having sexual desires, Jean-Claude Van Damme finally gets a Netflix deal with an action comedy called, “The Last Mercenary,” Back To The Future was supposed to be fueled by Coca-Cola according to Jon Cryer, Gail Weathers will appear in Scream 5, and the internet according to Rotten Tomatoes has compiled the Top 10 Christian Slater movies.

We talk about the audience reactions to our latest Movie of the Week video entry, which is all about great movie soundtracks, and so we briefly discuss this Judgement Night movie.

We get asked about our dream movie projects.  Nicky Lates has a good idea for a 1990s horror thriller with Gary Oldman, Dave has his Expendables Christmas movie going to the Hallmark Network for their 100 Days of Christmas, and Johnny Spoiler is so jaded he proclaims he is done wanting to make any movies at all, and recounts an ill-fated vampire movie that got optioned, circulated, rewritten, and almost made.

This week on #SUMMERSLASH2020 we reviewed Baskin, which translates as “Raid.”

It is the first feature film by a Turkish horror director named Can Evrenol (pronounced like John, a common first name in Turkey, as it turns out just like the name John)

He was influenced by filmmakers like David Lynch, George Romero, and John Carpenter.

He goes on to make horror films like Housewife and The Field Guild To Evil.

Baskin is about a police squad that goes to Hell, but as their nightmare plays out it seems like they have been in Hell or Purgatory the whole time on repeat.

We compare it to Hellraiser, Event Horizon, As Above So Below, and some other horror entries.

Baskin does not do well on the Binge Now, Binge Later, or Binge Never scales because it is not an easy movie to watch, and much is sadly lost in translation.  However, we are saying it is so disturbing and horrific, which it intended, that we could not recommend it to average viewers or even new horror movie fans.

A side discussion includes talking about how bitter John Carpenter seems in interviews lately.

This week we also watched Money Heist, Legend, The Counselor (Ridley Scott’s Showgirls), Umbrella Academy Season 2, and a horror movie documentary on Shudder called In Search Of Darkness.

    52. No Retreat No Surrender (w. Marek Larwood)

    52. No Retreat No Surrender (w. Marek Larwood)

Chris is joined in his dojo* by his podcasting sensei: comedian, writer, actor and generally funny-man, Marek Larwood.  Marek has chosen the 1986 martial arts phenomenon NO RETREAT NO SURRENDER, with its spectacle of karate, rapping, body-popping, skateboarding and acting by people who've never really done acting before.  You really don't want to miss this movie, or indeed this podcast. EP#36 Universal Soldier

    EP#36 Universal Soldier
In this episode we discuss the fashion sense of a ear neckless on super soldiers in Universal soldier. Private Luc Deveraux and his sadistic sergeant, Andrew Scott, got killed in Viet Nam. The army uses their bodies for a secret project - reanimating dead soldiers as deadly obedient cyborgs. However, their memories come back too.

    Death Warrant (1990)

    Death Warrant (1990)
040 - Another 10 eps means another Jean-Claude Van Damme masterpiece (or 'masterpiece'?). This week we are hitting one of the lesser known exploits of Van Damage, with 1990's Death Warrant. Is this the first JCVD with an actual storyline? Or simply the first one without a fighting tournament? These are the big questions, guys - and we are here to answer them. The biggest question of course being, does this movie hold up today, or is best left in the past?

    Peter Hyams

    Peter Hyams
In this week's episode of the podcast we look at the work of Peter Hyams, a director who knows how to make edge of your seat thrillers with action stars like Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarnegger and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Creating good looking films, as he was the director of photography on most of his films. He was the first director to join the Amercian Society of Cinematographers (ASC). The films under discussion OUTLAND, TIMECOP, A SOUND OF THUNDER and ENEMIES CLOSER. Movie Heaven Movie Hell is a show where filmmakers Simon Aitken (BLOOD + ROSES, POST-ITS, MODERN LOVE) and Keith Eyles (FEAR VIEW, DRIVEN INSANE, CROSSED LINES) go through the A-Z of directors. Simon and Keith talk about their favourite and least favourite film from that director's body of work. Episode 54: The Big House

    Episode 54: The Big House
"Live a life of crime and you do the time."

For this episode we visit 'The Big House'. That's right, we head behind bars to talk all about prison movies. We've excluded women-in-prison (as that is an episode unto itself) but here we talk all about Alcatraz, a couple of Stephen King adaptations, and that time that Jean-Claude Van Damme went undercover in prison to hunt down a serial killer(?!). There's many more flicks set in 'The Joint" that we cover and it would be 'criminal' if you don't listen - I'm done with the silly jokes now.

First off, we talk all about what we've been watching as Josh dusts off another relic of his VHS collection, Chris watches a couple of random sequels, and we look at a couple of Blumhouse releases. Plus much more!

Thanks for listening! Be sure to head to iTunes to subscribe and drop us a five star rating/review - every little bit helps!

    Bonus Episode: Hard Target

    Bonus Episode: Hard Target
If you want to see Lance Henriksen go full-dragon this is the film for you! Call your Daddy and watch 1993's “Hard Target” There's a human hunting operation in New Orleans and there only one gross greasy itinerant kickboxer that can stop it. Jean-Claude Van Damme kicks his way into our hearts with some help from his kooky Uncle Douvee played by American Hero Wilford Brimley.
