Andrew Does A Tribute to David Crosby

Andrew Does A Tribute to David Crosby

On January 19, 2023, musician David Crosby passed at the age of 81.  Crosby's music was hugely important to Andrew Langer, and in this bonus episode, Andrew talks about that influence--from Crosby's music to how he lived his life.  He talks about his relationships with his bandmates, a little about his love life, but ultimately gives a tribute to this musical giant.

    Episode 5: That 60's Show

    Episode 5: That 60's Show

What are the nerds listening to this week?

Darsh has been listening to video game music, specifically old Super Nintendo game music. What a nerd.

The Scared Fox has been listening to the new Sounds Of Animals Fighting EP and says it is great! The band is currently on tour this winter, good luck finding tickets!

Badger recommends the song Fire by the band Waxahatchee and also gives a sneak peek at one of his favorite albums of 2022, Big Thief's Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You.

The 60s or The Times They Were A Changing

We are exploring the decade that changed it all the 1960s, the vibe, the transformation, and the gear that helped change music into what it is today.

First, let's start off with the general vibe of the decade. If I had to label the vibe in one quote it would be “The Times They Are A Changing”

The early ’60s can still fall into the category we call “The oldies” which includes American standards like Elvis, Johny Cash, and also early Motown acts playing Soul, R&B, and DoWap. Bob Dylan released his first album in 1962 which was totally inspired by traditional Americana music like Folk, Bluegrass, and Country.

The mid ’60s was when the vibe really began to change, English acts were starting to Invade, Dylan went electric and change was in the air.

Artists started experimenting more with Psychedelic drugs, political protests, world music, and rebellion which was reflected in the stylistic changes of the music.

As the decade went on these changes were on full display with acts like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, and the Grateful Dead all coming into the spotlight.

All of this led up to 1969’s Woodstock festival which was one of the nation's most notable positive events. This all sets the stage for the 1970s but that’s a different episode.

Michael and Crosby’s relationship becomes more strained, but David is fired soon after and Michael’s close friend and former Byrd, Gene Clark, returns for rehearsals and television appearances. S1E2 THE BYRDS: DAVID CROSBY Flying High Until The End PART 2

S1E2 THE BYRDS: DAVID CROSBY Flying High Until The End PART 2

In Part 2 of David Crosby: Flying High Until The End, Jimmi discusses the last few weeks of  Crosby’s time with the Byrds and some of the events that lead to David being fired from the band.  Crosby has been on the outs with the other bandmembers for some time, but his behavior towards the end becomes more erratic and it seems to Jimmi that he is trying to get himself fired from the band and released from his contract with CBS.  Crosby has already begun to rehearse with Steven Stills and others in secret, and it is becoming clearer that Crosby is considering his future may not be with the Byrds.  The day before heading to a weekend gig in San Francisco, Jimmi is called to Crosby’s house by a woman who believes Crosby is overdosing. Two days later, Crosby takes out his frustration backstage at the Fillmore West by punching Jimmi in the back of the head and gets fired by the band several days later upon his return to LA.

    Episode 18. San Francisco Sound

    Episode 18. San Francisco Sound

They had their own scene and their own landmarks to celebrate their music. The San Francisco Sound was a cross between blues, some jug band music and the new electrified sounds that amplified the Bay Area scene. There were extended jams and studio experimentation. Mainly it was a party that everybody wanted to go to. The Monterey International Pop Festival created such a buzz that the party lasted all summer of '67. We will hear a sample of some of the important bands of the time.
