Bob Hope Memories & Letters From the WWII Troops featuring Martha Bolton

Bob Hope Memories & Letters From the WWII Troops featuring Martha Bolton

Bob Hope brought so much more than entertainment when he travelled the globe entertaining our troops. In a time before technology he provided healing, home and yes, hope. In return, Bob Hope received hundreds of thousands of letters of gratitude from the soldiers, nurses, spouses and parents sacrificing so much and longing for comfort and peace.

Moved and inspired by their letters, Bob wrote back often and a deeply moving collection of these exchanges is featured in a new book by Martha Bolton and Linda Hope called Dear Bob: Bob Hope’s Wartime Correspondence with the G.I.’s of World War II.

Martha wrote for Bob Hope for fifteen years and it is her great honor to share this compilation. She joins us for a heartwarming conversation.

Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending The Last Movie Stars on HBO and Sidney on Apple +.

Warner Archive September 2022 Release Highlights

Warner Archive September 2022 Release Highlights

Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein takes us through the September 2022 Blu-ray releases from the Warner Archive.

We kick off the discussion with the release of two TV series on Blu-ray.  First is the popular comedy “Young Sheldon” season 5,  which includes a 100th episode retrospective featurette titled, "Time Flies When You're Having Fun: Young Sheldon at 100."  The 2nd series is the bittersweet sixth and final season Blu-ray of the fan-favorite show "Lucifer," which includes deleted scenes and the ever-popular gag reel as extras.

Next, we discuss the re-release of the now out-of-print Blu-ray for the classic 1933 version of "King Kong," starring Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Bruce Cabot, directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, and scored by composer Max Steiner.  While re-releases are not common for the Warner Archive, the lack of availability for a film as important as “King Kong” made it a necessity to provide a new, affordable Blu-ray to the public.

And finally, we discuss the two films new to Blu-ray this month.  First up is "Abe Lincoln In Illinois," (1940) starring Raymond Massey, Gene Lockhart, Ruth Gordon, and directed by John Cromwell.  George provides background on the restoration and history of this presidential classic.  And we end our discussion with the award-winning release "Rachel, Rachel," (1968) starring Joanne Woodward and directed by her husband and first-time director, Paul Newman.

    Purchase on Amazon:
    King Kong (1933) Blu-ray
    Abe Lincoln In Illinios Blu-ray
    Rachel, Rachel Blu-ray
    Lucifer S6 Blu-ray
    Young Sheldon S5 Blu-ray

Before You Go: A Friendly Call with Film Critic Kathleen Carroll

Before You Go: A Friendly Call with Film Critic Kathleen Carroll

For our Season 1 finale, we honor the words that often end our show: "Might be time to pick up the phone. There's no time like the present! What a gift."

Before You Go co-hosts Nicole Franklin and Bryant Monteilh introduce this episode with the delightful and colorful reviews of Kathleen Carroll as remembered in her book My Life in the Dark. Kathleen is a retired film critic from the New York Daily News who made so many industry friends and connections she decided to bring Hollywood to her hometown of Lake Placid, New York by co-founding the Lake Placid Film Forum.  Nicole's time with Kathleen helped guide her career as an award-winning filmmaker as she took many cues from Kathleen's love of film and networking with legends behind the scenes.

We hope this episode reminds everyone that reminiscing with friends could be the most relaxing and rejuvenating part of the day. Thank you for listening to our storytelling series. See you in Season 2!

    Tuesday, March 13, 2007
March 13th is a slow day for observances around the world so we'll take it to the next level. It's Hamburger and Pickle Month and it's World Clown Week! It's also Play the Recorder Month, and your Almanac host makes his recorder dubut in today's episode. Tennessee's Butler Act went into effect this day in 1925. We've a brief explanation and we'll move on to 1938 and Germany's annexation of Austria. Today's the day news started getting out, and we've a snippet from a radio report. And then there's anniversary audio from The Long Hot Summer, The Allman Brothers Band, and Neil Sedaka. We close with observing the 21st anniversary of the Microsoft IPO. On the Almanac's companion Web page, there's more information about the Butler Act, the Scopes Trial, and there's even a link to the Microsoft IPO calculator. What the heck!
