WSEO - The Black Trans Gaze (ft. Kristen Lovell and D. Smith)

This week FANTI is passing the mic to We See Each Other: The Podcast. After you listen to the episode, make sure to check out Kristen Lovell’s The Stroll which premiered on Max the evening before this episode dropped.

Hosts Tre’vell Anderson and Shar Jossell welcome producer and co - director of the documentary, The Stroll, Kristen Lovell as they discuss the documentary’s portrayal of trans sex workers who worked in the Meatpacking District of New York City during the 90s. Lovell also speaks on finally having the control of the Black trans narrative behind the camera, and not just as the subject. Then, our hosts speak with the producer and director of the documentary, Kokomo City, D. Smith. She discusses the audience's reception to the film and  the legacy of Koko Da Doll, the star of the film who was tragically murdered earlier this year.

But first, Tre’vell and Shar discuss sex work representation in media as it pertains to Black Trans women and while it being a necessary piece of trans history, it is not the end all be all of trans representation. And later we hear what every day trans folks have to say about trans visibility in another segment of Pass The Mic.

BLACKBOARD JUNGLE — Hollywood's first rumble with rock ‘n’ roll

In his gritty ’55 flick BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, director Richard Brooks introduced a wide audience to Sidney Poitier, the harsh world of inner-city schools...and a genre of music called "rock ‘n’ roll."

Host Rico Gagliano tells the story of Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock"—cinema's first rock needle drop—with the help of music detective and author Jim Dawson, film writer Anna Ariadne Knight, and actor Peter Ford...the Hollywood kid who may have accidentally started the rock-n-roll era.

The third season of the MUBI Podcast, titled “Needle on the Record,” dives into the unifying power of movie music and tells the stories behind some of cinema’s most renowned “needle drops”—moments where filmmakers deployed pre-existing music instead of an original score. Each episode explores an iconic marriage of song and image that’s become part of pop culture. It’s a six-part mixtape for film lovers.

Fighting for Who You Are & What You Believe In - The Movie Sidney documenting the late, great Sidney Poitier.

Fighting for Who You Are & What You Believe In - The Movie Sidney documenting the late, great Sidney Poitier.

Whether you marched in the civil rights movement, personally experience, or know a visible minority who continues to experience racism in our society today (sadly, incidents of crimes against humanity, discrimination and racism are still reported regularly), Sidney is a documentary portrait of the late, great Sidney Poitier. Produced by Oprah Winfrey & Derik and directed by Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang, Marshall), this piece showcases his films, life story, and litany of accomplishments as an artist and activist who forever changed what it means to be Black in America.

Poitier’s own words provide the narration of his life. Woven together is a rich mix of archive footage and contemporary interviews with a stellar group of interview subjects — from the late cultural critic Greg Tate to Halle Berry, Denzel Washington to Spike Lee, to Barbra Streisand, and Oprah.

Poitier’s contemporaries and the holders of his legacy detail just how extraordinary his rise was, from early failure at the American Negro Theater to Oscar-nominated roles in films like The Defiant Ones, to becoming the living, big-screen embodiment of America’s hopes for racial justice.

Poitier’s rise to stardom occurred in tandem with his commitment to social change, marching for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., and helping to usher Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, a milestone in portraying Black American experience, from Broadway to the big screen.

Watching signature scenes from his films, getting a glimpse of rare footage from his life beyond Hollywood, and seeing how pivotal his life and example has been for so many of today’s icons, it’s clear that there never was and never can be a figure quite like Sidney Poitier.

The movie premiered at TIFF 2022. I was there as accredited media working the red carpet. It was an honor to speak with Reginald, and see in-person Sidney’s wife & daughters, Oprah, Tyler Perry, and Gayle King relay the power and impact of Sidney Potier, who paved the way for them.

Bob Hope Memories & Letters From the WWII Troops featuring Martha Bolton

Bob Hope Memories & Letters From the WWII Troops featuring Martha Bolton

Bob Hope brought so much more than entertainment when he travelled the globe entertaining our troops. In a time before technology he provided healing, home and yes, hope. In return, Bob Hope received hundreds of thousands of letters of gratitude from the soldiers, nurses, spouses and parents sacrificing so much and longing for comfort and peace.

Moved and inspired by their letters, Bob wrote back often and a deeply moving collection of these exchanges is featured in a new book by Martha Bolton and Linda Hope called Dear Bob: Bob Hope’s Wartime Correspondence with the G.I.’s of World War II.

Martha wrote for Bob Hope for fifteen years and it is her great honor to share this compilation. She joins us for a heartwarming conversation.

Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending The Last Movie Stars on HBO and Sidney on Apple +.

Devotional: Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?

Devotional: Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?

In December 1967 the film “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?” was released.  Starring academy award winners Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, and Sidney Poitier the movie
tackled the subject of interactional marriage which was recently made legal by the Supreme Court in the Loving v. Virginia decision.

The movie centers around a dinner where the young interactional couple played by Poitier and actress Katharine Houghton have come to her wealthy parents’ home to announce their engagement and to seek their blessings.

Dinner is a central theme of a passage from Luke 14: 7-23.  Jesus is invited to dinner by a leader of the Pharisees.  There he sees the humility, hospitality, and the lack of harmony among the guest which he can not bless.

Jesus in Luke 14:7-23 is calling on us to be humble by allowing others to shine, Jesus is calling on us show hospitality by inviting those who are most needy to our dinner table instead of the rich.  Jesus is inviting us to live in harmony utilizing our time, talents, and treasure to the benefit of all of God’s children.

The wealthy parents in “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?” after a great deal of anguish  gives their blessing.  Invite Jesus to your dinner table and you will receive a blessing.

A Conversation With AFI Founder George Stevens, Jr. on growing up in the Golden Age of Hollywood

A Conversation With AFI Founder George Stevens, Jr. on growing up in the Golden Age of Hollywood

On today's episode, we go slightly beyond the presidency as we talk to George Steven's Jr. about his new memoir, My Place in the Sun: Life in the Golden Age of Hollywood and Washington.

The son of famed film director George Stevens, George Stevens Jr. grew up in the highest reaches of Hollywood, on the sets of classic films like Giant, Shane, The Diary of Anne Frank, and A Place in the Sun. But yearning for his own place in the sun, he ventured to Washington to work with legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow at the United States Information Agency, producing films for John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, before going on to work for other presidents in other capacities.

The founding director of the American Film Institute and the creator of the Kennedy Center Honors, Stevens describes his remarkable life and unimaginable brushes with history.

Before You Go: Adger Cowans Photographing Us

When Nicole Franklin first met Adger Cowans years ago in New York City she knew other being an extremely talented artist and photographer, he has a welcoming spirit that has put thousands of his subjects through the years at ease. With Adger on the mic, both Bryant and Nicole have a wonderful time recalling his childhood in Columbus, OH, weekend trips to New York to hear jazz greats eventually moving in with his mentor Gordon Parks, and falling out of his seat twice when it was time for a gorgeous nude model to disrobe. From encounters with the Fondas on the set of Golden Pond, to Sidney Poitier running out of the room when setting eyes on Adger's photograph of Diahann Carroll in a bikini, to punching a colleague in the face just to turn around and ask for a signature making Adger the first Black photographer in International Cinematographers Guild Local 600.  Adger Cowans is the supreme example of a life well lived and now, in his mid-80s, he's busier than ever.
