The Unexpected Abigail Adams with John L. Smith

She was a wife, mother, confidant, and a social and political advisor during one of the most tumultuous periods of American history. Despite never being elected to an office, in recognition of her power of influence and sagacity her portrait now hangs permanently in the Senate Chamber of the Massachusetts General Court. Few women in the period of the American Revolution and early Republic left behind such a voluminous correspondence as Abigail Adams. As her husband John got further involved in the cause of American independence and sovereignty, Abigail's circle of friends and admirers grew in like proportion, eventually leading her from Weymouth, Massachusetts to the great courts of Europe.   We talk with  John L. Smith, Jr., , author of The Unexpected Abigail  Adams:  A Woman not Apt to be Intimidated.

    Liberty Without Faith Is Dead

    Liberty Without Faith Is Dead
John Adams once said that “our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.” Like so many of the Framers and Founders, he had a deep level of understanding that seems to have been lost today. So what exactly was John Adams’ meaning? The answer may come from a story related to us from the Midrash, when a famous Rabbi sent two of his disciples to a nearby town to inspect things. When they arrived, the asked the city leaders to show them the Guardians of their city. The Rabbis were shown the Soldiers who guarded and policed the town. “These are not the guardians of your city,” exclaimed Rabbi Asi, “These are the destroyers of your city.” Before you get all “Defund the police” on me, you need to understand the deeper meaning of what the Rabbis meant. Which, by the by, was the same thig that John Adams meant…

    Josiah Quincy with Janet Uhlar

    Josiah Quincy with Janet Uhlar

Josiah Quincy, known as "Josiah the Patriot" was one of the brilliant lights of the Revolutionary cause in Boston.  He came from a well-known and well-respected family and as a young lawyer he worked with John Adams to defend Captain Thomas Preston in his trial for murder stemming from the Boston Massacre.  Learn more about this impressive young man who died in 1775, depriving a soon-to-be independent America of his passion for liberty and the rights of man.  Janet Uhlar, author of  Liberty's Martyr, a biography of Joseph Warren, and Freedom's Cost:  The Story of Nathanael Greene, talks with us about the brief but brilliant life of Josiah Quincy, Jr.

    King Hancock with Brooke Barbier

    King Hancock with Brooke Barbier

John Hancock, the most famous signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a man of contradictions.  He was a man born into privilege, and yet he became one of the most passionate voices for the rights of the common man. He was a wealthy man of business, but longed for military glory.  We talk with Brooke Barbier, author of King Hancock:  The Radicat Influence of a Moderate Founder, about this enigmatic figure we think we know so well.  Brooke Barbier is also the founder of Ye Olde Tavern Tours, for those who want beer with their history (and vice versa), and the author of Boston in the American Revolution:  A town vs. an Empire, available from Amazon or as part of a tour.

A Brighter Summer Day & Until the End of the World

A Brighter Summer Day & Until the End of the World
2023 was the year that Overlapping Dialogue went out of control. No one knew where it might land. It soared above the ozone layer like a lethal bird of prey. The whole world was alarmed. Only Kyle & Levi couldn't care less... In our second episode celebrating the cinema of the 1990s, we hitch a ride in the way-back machine and head straight ahead into the year of 1991 with a double feature that would collectively captivate you for nearly 9 hours: A Brighter Summer Day & Until the End of the World! But before we travel through the weighty contexts surrounding both films, we dig into a Blue Plate Special that belatedly celebrates the 2008 HBO miniseries John Adams and finds a distressing degree of comfort in the two most recent entries in the Evil Dead franchise (2013's Evil Dead and the newly released Evil Dead Rise). We make quick work of the deadites and eventually arrive to this episode's marquee pairing: listen as we marvel at the revelatory slice of life cinema of Edward Yang, the reflective yet rollicking magnum opus of Wim Wenders, and ponder the ways in which both works reflect upon and conclude a 20th century reaching its uncertain conclusion. Stay till the at once sweet yet bitter end for a very special gift, Mr. Wenders himself! In his his second appearance on the pod (albeit his first as a communicatory android), the German New Wave auteur reflects on a whole host of topics, ranging from Sam Neill Pop Funko vinyls, his failed attempt to remake Fantasia in live action in the late 90s, and the unforeseen ways Gary Busey impacted his life forever. Along the way they discover why Haz salivates at the sound of a gamelan and how every minimalist needs a marimba.

GOP ON TRUMP: "I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THIS GUY DIES' - 1.31.23

GOP ON TRUMP: "I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THIS GUY DIES' - 1.31.23

EPISODE 123: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN

A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: "You have a lot of folks who are just waiting for his mortal demise," says former Michigan Republican Congressman Peter Meijer. "I've heard from a lot of people who will go onstage and put on the red hat and then give me a call the next day and say 'I can't wait until this guy dies.'" It's an amazing strategy but a passive one. And it ignores the various walls closing in on Trump: two District Attorneys, three Grand Juries, one Judiciary Chairman annoyed at John Durham and William Barr, one Judiciary Chairman rebuffed by Merrick Garland, one porn star, and one guy named Pecker.

Still, potentially the most extraordinary story about Trump: the clouds gathering around the arrest of Charlie McGonigal, who was a 24/7, 365 days a year, hot and cold running blackmail-victim-FBI-Agent-waiting-to-happen. And now two analysts look at his arrest and suggest: this may evolve into a) a spy scandal in which the national security was utterly breached and b) a journalistic disaster in which Trump, Russia, and the FBI managed to manipulate The New York Times into pushing Trump across the finish line in 2016.

B-Block (18:53) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Memphis, in Texas (20:06) IN SPORTS: The passing of hockey's Bobby Hull and Cleveland's John Adams; Why was the 52nd best player in baseball chosen to adorn the cover of its top video game? And happy 206th birthday, J. Shorthouse, Esq. (24:07) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: More George Santos stupidity, a Florida Climate Caucus Congresswoman who owns up to $195k in oil stocks, and Megyn Kelly slams Jill Biden for something her own father did.

C-Block (29:56) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: CNN has gone and done it: addressing its cratering ratings by adding a regular Friday segment from Bill Maher's HBO panel. Time again to go back to 2009 when Bill and I nearly brawled at his HBO after-party because he insisted we never met in college (spoiler alert: Oh yeah we did).

    Living A Life Of Passion

    Living A Life Of Passion
Passion is a state of being. It’s something we choose to create and that we can and will reignite again and again and again during our lifetimes. It’s a quest… it’s a choice… It’s a way of living. In this episode, the incomparable Abigail Adams, one of the leading female voices of the American revolutionary period, conveys to us through the power of her pen, that the flame of passion burns brightest when we allow all that we love to become part of who we are.
