    What Happened to Glenn Miller?

    What Happened to Glenn Miller?

Glenn Miller was an international superstar when he abruptly decided to dissolve his band and join the US military during WWII. While his songs were still being played across the world, he took a last-minute flight from England to France... and disappeared. In tonight's episode, Ben, Matt and Noel dive into the mystery, asking a question that remains officially unsolved in the modern day: What happened to Glenn Miller?

Glenn Miller's WWII Service and Disappearance

Glenn Miller's WWII Service and Disappearance

During World War II, about 16 million people from all walks of life served in the U.S. military. This number included many of the top celebrities of the day – so much so that historians often refer to the period as a time when “Hollywood went to war.” Stars like Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart famously joined the military – as did many others in the entertainment industry. Some fought on the front lines, while others were placed in positions to use their industry talents to help the U.S. military with training, propaganda, morale, and public relations. The great big band leader Glenn Miller was part of this later group. To discuss Miller’s military service and the latest research on his disappearance, the MacArthur Memorial Podcast hosted Dennis M. Spragg, author of Glenn Miller Declassified and Senior Consultant for the Glenn Miller Archives at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Ep. 27: Big Game Special: Stanford trombonist Gary Tyrrell

As the trombonist who got run over by Cal’s Kevin Moen at the end of The Play--the epic, five-lateral kickoff return that decided the 1982 Big Game--Gary Tyrrell has spent decades recalling his place in football history. He does that here, expansively and hilariously, and so much more. From Stanford band transgressions to over-the-top pranks to killer Grateful Dead shows to an unmatched case of the Sunday Scaries, Gary hits all the right notes.

    Glenn Miller Ghost Bands

    Glenn Miller Ghost Bands
Today's show is kind of a nostalgic program for me. The first time I heard a live big band was when the Glenn Miller Orchestra played at a local high school. I was just a high school senior but I was interested in the big bands so I bought a ticket. I don't think I was supposed to be taping the performance but no one said anything so I stood off to the side of the bandstand and took in the sights and sounds. Peanuts Hucko was the director of the band and I marveled at his great playing. Well, a couple of months ago I came across my cassette tape from that night. I digitized it and with the help of my friend here at the station we cleaned it up. So today's show features the Glenn Miller Orchestra down through the years directed by different leaders. There is some great music in this set as well as four numbers from my tape. There are no recordings of Peanuts leading the band so this is kind of a rarity. I hope you enjoy the music. A D-Day Anniversary Rememberance

    A D-Day Anniversary Rememberance
This June 6th, 2017 is the anniversary of the invasion of Normandy better known as D-Day. It was a day that many American service men lost their lives. To pay tribute to those who served during that fateful time I would like to present some music from Glenn Miller and his Army Air-Force Orchestra. In order to get the timing right I've picked four numbers and two live radio remotes. Glenn's show was called "I Sustain The Wings". We'll be hearing a 13 minute show and a 29 minute show. There is some great music in these shows and I hope you enjoy it as we remember the many events that happened on June 6th, 1944. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com
