Only Lovers Left Alive: Slow-Livin' Cutie Pies

Soju from Straight Chilling Podcast joins Caitlin to discuss Only Lovers Left Alive, an indulgent 2013 vampire movie from Jim Jarmusch. We talk about brooding, the arts and humanities, love and companionship, and O-negative popsicles. Vampirism 101, really.

Tangents include: blood types, FMK for Anne Rice vamps, which emojis are the most sinister, beverage fountains, Say Yes to the Dress, Great British Baking Show, books, lighting preferences, and upcoming movies.

    The Skeleton Key: Hoodoo Horror

    The Skeleton Key: Hoodoo Horror

Elizabeth joins Caitlin to cover 2005's The Skeleton Key. We've got a great monstrous femme figure in The Skeleton Key, and the movie does a good job of exploring the intersections of race, age, gender, and spirituality. We also speculate at it possibly being an influence for Get Out, another horror movie that explores those issues extremely well. Tangents include: DVD bonus features, pizza, blankets, discount stores, flags, posters, animal horror, the haunted house Elizabeth gew up in, and some FMKs.

Dance of Death: Lars Von Trier's Melancholia

Cinema is a strange and captivating artform. In many cases, understanding a filmmaker's intent is a hopeless effort. Lars Von Trier is a director whose filmography has captivated, confused, angered, and endeared itself to audiences. His critically-lauded 2011 film, Melancholia, would startle and fascinate audiences at The 64th Cannes Film Festival. The film itself would beguile audiences (awarding Best Female Pereformance to Kirsten Dunst and making the film a top contender for the Palme d'Or, but it was press conference in support of the film that would torpedoe it's chances at the Award. This week, Mr. Chavez & I discuss the controversy surrounding that press conference as well as our own contradictory attitudes regarding the film. This is an interesting film with a great deal to recomend. We discuss these positives and dive just as deeply into the negatives of the film's offerings. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. ManyThanks.

    Alien: Mommy Issues

    Alien: Mommy Issues

Or should we say MU-TH-UR issues? Jason (from Dads from the Crypt) joins Caitlin to cover a sci fi horror classic: 1979's Alien. Alien is a movie with a ton of cool themes; the ones we pull for Plug It Up are sex and motherhood (with bonus horrific pregnancy/birth). We also get into the development of the script, the awesome practical effects, and the killer cast. Did you know Sigourney Weaver refused to shave her pubes for the underwear shot? I didn't know that when we recorded, but found out after. I'm always learning new things about Alien! Go Sigourney! Be sure to check out Dads from the Crypt.

Then Is Now Episode 32 - Alien 1979
