    Episode 3x07 - Frozen II

Return to Arendelle with us as we take on Frozen II, the sequel that brought Disney’s biggest IP of the century back to the big screen. We’ll discuss how it measures up to the phenomenal first film, which still sits comfortably in our Top 5, as well as the new efforts it made and issues it tackled.

    Don’t miss:

    • The crucial role Olaf plays in this film as an audience stand-in
    • How fear once again resurfaces as the film’s antagonist, though not as clearly as in the first film
    • A discussion of the truly masterful music the Lopez duo wrote for this film - better than the first film, if you can believe that
    • Our final score for the film - can it beat its powerful predecessor?

PLUS, we talk through all the thoughts our audience had when they watched the movie, including all our listeners who joined us for #ddpwatchnight on Twitter.

My wife Jennie Brewster comes on the show to discuss her job working with children and also gives hot takes about the 2019 film Little Monsters. We dive deep into chatting about raising our daughter Ava, why Lupita Nyong’o should be in everything, which childhood entertainer would be helpful during a zombie apocalypse, Josh Gad’s best role, and why we love horror as a couple.

Jennie additionally shares her own childhood stories that turned her into a horror fan, which Wiggles member drives her nuts, and talks about why Mr. Rogers is the gold standard for human beings.

It’s a fun episode full of callbacks to your favourite childhood entertainers, bonding over horror, parenting wins and fails, and much more!

Josh Gad Secret Olaf Interview & His Role in Artemis Fowl

Josh Gad Secret Olaf Interview & His Role in Artemis Fowl

It’s Harry Potter vs. Artemis Fowl! Josh Gad is the Hagrid of Artemis Fowl & Gilderoy Lockhart directed! Let’s talk about the connection & flash back to my secret Frozen Olaf interview with Josh Gad! Josh is SUPER nice and of course, really funny! Knowing that he’s a big Star Wars fan, we definitely had to get a question in there!

There’s so much crossover with Harry Potter here. From Mulch Diggums looking curiously a lot like Hagrid to Gilderoy Lockhart, well, Kenneth Branagh, directing! This is undeniably Disney’s foray into a Harry Potter-type universe. Will it work? Well, early reviews aren’t looking great, but it’s certainly a strong book series with many fans. They’ve also brought it some major actors here with Dame Judi Dench and, of course, Josh Gad!

So, we met Josh Gad back in 2013 at Disney’s D23! It’s the same even where I interviewed both Kristen Bell: https://youtu.be/KeYgl05AZR8 and Idina Menzel: https://youtu.be/0d1sPqvqHEI It’s really cool to look back in 2020 at an interview from before the world knew Olaf, Anna, Elsa and Frozen!

    CHAPTERS:
    00:00 Intro
    00:38 Supergirl the Movie connection
01:09 Gilderoy Lockhart from Harry Potter
    02:16 Josh Gad interview
02:39 Josh talks about voice acting and Olaf
03:10 Josh talks about singing in Frozen
03:31 Does Olaf Have Relatives on Hoth?

OH! To those of you who caught the Cult Classic Supergirl the Movie reference, here’s my coverage from the very early Piper’s Picks TV days:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DYzO7MzI_s

Pete Davidson, Artemis Fowl and I May Destroy You

Pete Davidson, Artemis Fowl and I May Destroy You
In a crazy week for new releases, the team pack in as many shows as possible, and invite Bethany Minelle back to help spread the entertainment love.

They kick-off with Spike Lee’s prescient Netflix movie Da 5 Bloods, about four Vietnam veterans returning to the field to exorcise some memories and while they’re at it, dig up some treasure too.

Stevie’s been catching up with tattooed Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson, and finds out how he’s doing after making the very personal movie The King Of Staten Island with director Judd Apatow, streaming now.

Katie isn’t convinced by David Tennant and Michael Sheen’s latest show – lockdown project Staged on the BBC iPlayer – despite the hair extensions and peek into their private lives it offers.

Bethany catches up with Frozen star Josh Gad in her kitchen (she’s in her kitchen, he’s not) and finds out all about the Disney adaptation of much-loved kids book Artemis Fowl. She also does her best to find out if we can expect Frozen 3 soon… With limited success.

There’s a rare moment of agreement as Michaela Coel’s latest BBC drama, I May Destroy You, blows everyone’s socks off, and in lieu of actually escaping abroad this year there’s a bit of time to chat about Polish language Harlan Coben adaptation The Woods, on Netflix.

The BBC’s Salisbury Poisonings bring back distant memories of a time when Hazmat suits on TV were uncommon, and then a complete gear change to the supernatural spoofing of BBC Two’s latest series of What We Do In The Shadows.

Phew, we told you it was packed.

Please do subscribe if you like what you hear and do get in touch using backstage@sky.uk – we love emails!

#282: But I Believe Elsa Can Save the World

It might not technically be an adaptation, but the hosts couldn't resist talking about Frozen II (2019): the emotional new songs, cute new sidekicks, and Kristoff's Best Boyfriend award.

Question of the Week: What origins could the other (non-water) spirits have in Scandinavian folklore?

    Episode 80 - Frozen

    Episode 80 - Frozen

Disney's Oscar-winning 2013 cultural sensation "Frozen," that created ear-worm songs for annoyed parents everywhere, is already considered a classic piece of Disney animation, rivaling the likes of "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King," and has critics and moviegoers spewing nonsense about how its message is progressive and fresh when it's actually regressive and spoiled.

The flimsy, sloppy, incoherent plot is as follow: When their kingdom becomes trapped in perpetual winter, Princess Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) joins forces with ice salesman Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) and his reindeer sidekick to find Anna's sister, Snow Queen Elsa (voiced by Adele Dazeem, er, Idina Menzel), to try and break her icy spell that she accidentally cast on everyone. Although their journey leads them to encounters with kidnapping trolls, an undead snowman (creepily voiced Josh Gad), harsh conditions, and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff push onward in a race to save their kingdom from winter's cold grip.

Um, yeah. We also get a fair share of Nordic stereotypes, skitzo characters, catchy songs that make no sense contextually to the plot, and unearned villainous turns.

Join us as Keating talks about how Olaf haunts his dreams, we realize Jim’s amazing ability to point out when characters look like Ron Jeremy, and as we discuss Brad Pitt’s former plans to create the 9/11 Memorial.

Come Ride on My Skin Bus w/ "The Comedians" co-creator Ben Wexler

On the eve of the debut of "The Comedians" on FX, Dennis visits the home of his old sketch comedy friend from the 90's Ben Wexler, who is the series' showrunner and one of its exec producers. Ben talks about getting to work on his dream project, "The Comedians" after many years in the TV comedy trenches, what it's like to ask his childhood idol Billy Crystal if they can make a joke at his expense in the show, and the thrill of seeing ads for his baby all over LA. Ben and Dennis also recall many adventures from their 20-plus year friendship; the sketches they did together in the comedy troupe Off-Off-Fairfax, two trips to Vegas, Ben's appearances as Woody Allen in The MisMatch Game, and getting sexed-up while listening to the Indigo Girls. Other topics include: Ben's stint on "The Michael J. Fox Show," his first big Hollywood job on a little movie called "Forrest Gump," working on the Netflix version of "Arrested Development" and how Ben can't say the word "tweaking" without giggling. Benji Doesn’t Hate Preston Lacy!

In this episode, Chad goes AWOL to watch his Chiefs lose, so Scott and Benji discuss Frozen, Amish drive-bys, Benji’s secret love of Preston Lacy, and the untimely death of Paul Walker.  Benji also does his best to alienate all the drunk driver contingent of our audience while Scott cringes, and we talk about yet another reason to hate Guasano’s Pizza.  Plus, we almost completely ignore fantasy football.
