Avoiding Babylon was started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these difficult and dark days, when most of us were isolated from family, friends, our parishes, and even the Sacraments themselves, this channel was started as a statement of standing against the tyrannical mandates that many of us were living under. Since those early days, this channel has morphed into an amazing community of friends…no…more than friends…Christian brothers and sisters…who have grown in joy and charity.

Avoiding Babylon does not criticize the hierarchy or institutional Church, especially Pope Francis. We recognize there is an unprecedented crisis in the Church, but we feel that there are other shows that address these issues that are more qualified than us. Instead, we try to remind ourselves and those who enjoy the channel that being Catholic is a joyful and exciting experience. We seek true Catholic fraternity and eutrapelia with other Catholics who, like us, are doing their best to live out their vocation with the help of God’s Grace. Above all, we try to bring humor and joy to the craziness of this fallen world, for as Hillaire Belloc has famously said:

“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,
There’s always laughter and good red wine.
At least I’ve always found it so.
Benedicamus Domino!”

About Harvey's guest: 

Today’s guest, Stanley A. Goldman, has written a book that moved me so deeply, that I simply had to invite him on our show.  The book is entitled, “Left to the Mercy of a Rude Stream: The Bargain That Broke Adolf Hitler and Saved my Mother”.   

Our guest tells the riveting and harrowing account of how his mother, Malka Repstein, a young Jewish wife and mother living in Poland during the Second World War, survived the unspeakably brutal murder by the Nazis of her husband and 2 young children, and spent 2 years in the horrific Lodz ghetto, before being transported to the Auschwitz death camp, where she and a group of 500 women were literally at the steps of the gas chambers, when they were miraculously saved and sent to the Krupp Munitions Factory in Berlin to work as slaves, and subjected to inhuman living and working conditions.   

In April 1945, the women were transported from the factory to the notorious Ravensbruk concentration camp to be exterminated.  Malka had no idea that her life would be saved by a bizarrely improbable and little known bargain struck on April 21, 1945, by a courageous German Jew with a Swedish passport, by the name of Norbert Masur, and the worst mass murderer of the 3rd Reich, Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS and Gestapo, directly responsible for the implementation of the unprecedented and most extensive genocide in history, carried out by the Nazi regime, and forever referred to as the Holocaust.   

Himmler, who by that time realized only too well that the Germans were headed for humiliating defeat, was desperate to cultivate a positive relationship with the Allies in the hopes of saving his own skin.  And so he secretly agreed to release 1,000 Jewish female prisoners from the Ravensbruk concentration camp and turn them over to the Red Cross for safe passage to Sweden.  Malka eventually went to America, married Morris Goldman, and gave birth to our guest.   

He’s a professor of law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, as well as a celebrated journalist and television news correspondent and legal analyst.  He’s also the founding director of the Loyola Center for the Study of Law and Genocide.

Nhi Aronheim stands at only four feet, nine inches tall, but her story is immense.

Several anthologies including KENTUCKY WOMEN: TWO CENTURIES OF INDOMITABLE SPIRIT AND VISION, and a documentary that aired on PBS, VIETNAM 101, have profiled her harrowing journey as a child refugee who escaped war-torn Vietnam in search of the American Dream.

The soles of her feet still bear the scars of her horrific escape from Vietnam—where she trudged through the jungles of Cambodia as a child with a group of strangers seeking the land of opportunity: America.  Her only possessions at the time were two pieces of clothing and a heart filled with hope.

Speaking very little English when Nhi arrived in Kentucky, thanks to the support from her teacher (who became her adoptive mother), Nhi excelled in school and became valedictorian her senior year. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Centre College in Danville, and a Master of Science degree in Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Nhi worked for four years as a telecommunications consultant during which time she met and married a Jewish man, and converted to Judaism in 2004. Nhi has two beautiful children who she has raised to embrace Vietnamese and Jewish cultures.

After transitioning to sales and marketing in the mortgage industry—where Nhi worked for over sixteen years—she retired from the mortgage industry as a marketing specialist at the age of forty-one to to begin her next life adventure. Since then, she has been a mediator and interpreter. She also volunteers her time as a mediator for courts and the Better Business Bureau as well as being an active member of Toastmasters.

In 2013, Nhi earned a Black Belt in Taekwondo, fulfilling a promise she made to her birth mom—who wanted Nhi to learn karate before she left Vietnam—in the event she came under attack during her escape, she could protect herself.

Having come full circle from prosperity to poverty and back, Nhi hopes to encourage others to believe that in spite of overwhelming odds, all things are possible if one has an intense desire, focused energy, and the audacity to grasp presented opportunities.

Her story isn’t just another inspirational survival story, however. It’s about the lessons she’s learned about humanity, diversity, and unconditional love since arriving in the United States. After she met her Jewish beau, they married and she now has a deeper appreciation for the parallels between the Jewish and Vietnamese cultures, and others.

Her website is an invitation, from her heart to yours.

Ask, believe, receive.  It’s the Law of Attraction motto, and it’s very simple.  We are all GREAT at asking, and we are usually pretty clear on what it is we want.  Receiving is a no brainer, because it simply comes as a result of believing.  It is the believing part that seems to trouble most of you and this is precisely what I want to help you with here today!

Believing can be hard, because we have to believe in the unseen, in order to get what we want.  For example, maybe you want to manifest a great new relationship.  You haven’t yet manifested it, you haven’t seen it with your own eyes, yet in order to get it you must believe it is yours!

This week in West Hollywood, the jewish people have suffered a hate crime. Sadly, we saw no outrage, and no statements of solidarity. Instead, we saw more hate spreading around social media.  

No matter your views on the Middle-East, hatred is not going to be the solution to peace and a better and kinder world. LOVE on the other hand is. LOVE is very powerful in its healing, and LOVE is the only thing that can bring us together regardless of our differences.
