The Holiday (2006): KATE WINSLET & CAMERON DIAZ

The Holiday (2006): KATE WINSLET & CAMERON DIAZ

In this episode, Angie and Steffi are continuing on their holiday diva movie journey with the modern day Christmas romcom classic “The Holiday” (2006) featuring our divas of the week: Kate Winslet & Cameron Diaz.

For this episode, we combined what would normally be two parts of an episode into one episode because that’s what we used to do when covering movies. However, this will probably change in future episodes. But the first part of this episode is reviewing the movie via various scene discussions, while the second part of this episode is us talking about “The Holiday” era in Kate Winslet & Cameron Diaz’s careers respectively.

During our review, we discuss meet cutes, the Santa Ana winds, why Arthur is the best character, Angie’s love for Miles/ Jack Black, Steffi’s love for Graham/ Jude Law and our shared love for that iconic 3 way phone call scene.

Then, during our era breakdown, we talk about how “The Holiday” plays up to or against Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet’s on screen personas, respectively. We also discuss Nancy Meyers’ career at this time and how despite the film having underwhelming success, it became a modern day holiday classic over time.

LOGLINE: The Holiday is a 2006 American romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. Coproduced by Bruce A. Block, it was filmed in both California and England and stars Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as Iris and Amanda, two lovelorn women from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, who arrange a home exchange to escape heartbreak during the Christmas and holiday season. Jude Law and Jack Black were cast as the film's leading men Graham and Miles, with Eli Wallach, Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell playing key supporting roles.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows & Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows & Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century

We're going on a bit of a detective spree today, and what better way to kick things off than with a little chat about pipes? We all know how Sherlock loved his, and honestly, who can resist the allure of a finely crafted smoking instrument?

First up, there's the iconic Briar Pipe. You've likely seen this one in the hands of wise old gentlemen – it's got that vintage charm, doesn't it? Then there's the artistic Meerschaum. It's not just a pipe but a piece of art. Oh, and how can we forget the rustic Corncob, famously loved by none other than Mark Twain? If you're channelling your inner Sherlock, then the Calabash is your go-to with its unique gourd shape. And for those long, thoughtful evening puffs, the Churchwarden, with its elongated stem, is just sublime.....

Speaking of sublime, our Movie of the Week is none other than "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows". Guy Ritchie has truly outdone himself with this one. With Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law returning as our beloved Holmes-Watson duo, the stakes are high, and the suspense is palpable. Moriarty's dark schemes, some heart-pounding action, and that climactic chess game — pure cinematic gold! And, Dads, let's chat about that epic showdown at the Reichenbach Falls. It's one for the books!

Now, for a blast from the past, who remembers "Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century"? It's a futuristic twist with our detective being resurrected, flying drones, a techy London, and – wait for it – a robotic Watson! If you're looking for some quality time with the kiddos, this animated series is just the ticket. It's a delightful reminder that Holmes' magic never fades, no matter the era.

So, Dads, whether you're a budding detective, a pipe aficionado, or just here for the nostalgia, we've got a treat for you today. Put on your thinking caps, maybe light up a pipe, and let's dive into this mystery-filled episode of Bad Dads Film Review! 🕵️‍♂️🔍

As the Listener Takeover continues, the guys have noticed that majority of the picks thus far have been "middle of the road". Not too good, not too bad, just some meh for lack of a better word. Today's movie however, The Grand Budapest Hotel, wasn't that. But was it good good, or was it BAD BAD? Can this star studded film get Gagoosh approval? Or will it sink to the list of shame?

Episode 190: Filmmaker Cate Jones talks her new film 'Chicken House'

Episode 190: Filmmaker Cate Jones talks her new film 'Chicken House'

This week, filmmaker Cate Jones joins the show to talk about her latest film. Chicken House has been playing the festival circuit this year and has been seen at genre fests such as the Chattanooga Film Festival. This weekend the movie will be playing at The Shawna Shea Memorial Film Festival, The Arizona Underground Film Festival, and the Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival.

The film is about four aspiring actresses who live in a house together. When one of them moves out of their home, the other three have to bring in a new roommate. The new addition to their household turns things upside down as tensions rise and some unexpected visitors make their appearance.

Chicken House touches on a number of themes. It deals with friendship, sexuality, identity, and the idea of close mindedness versus being open minded. Cate goes into the process of writing the film and how she brought her cast together. There is also a discussion about some of the ideas explored in the film.

When we asked if Cate would join our humble little podcast, we also asked if there was a movie she wanted to talk about. She chose an interesting one in 2018's Vox Lux. Blake had to overcome his natural dislike of Natalie Portman in order to discuss a movie that brings a lot of ideas to the table.

We talk about the nature of celebrity and tragedy, Portman's performances, and and ending that some may find self-indulgent. We also talk about the strong acting in the movie and how it is impossible to make Jude Law not look handsome. How did this all lead into a talk about Annihilation?
