Welcome to the Merry Month of Debts-cember!

Part 2 - 8 Lazy Nights IV - On this week's show, because I just didn't have it in me to pull off another extended show, we're dialing it back with one of our shortest episodes of the year! 8 songs (one for each night of Chanukah) plus a bonus track to represent the starter candle.

All this & much, much less!

Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.

boygenius - the record Album Review (feat. Callie Claridge & Mateo Valdez)

Singer/songwriter supergroup boygenius has returned for their official debut album: the record! Released on March 31st, the record is their first release since their self-titled EP in 2018.

Formed by Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, boygenius is a combination of the different styles brought by each of the singer/songwriter’s respective solo careers. Throughout their music, the trio trades verses and share their stories of friendship, heartbreak, and self reflection.

Here is our review of boygenius’s debut studio album, the record.

What Were The Best Albums of 2021? Two Middle-Aged White Men Tell You Theirs
Two middle-aged white men talk about their favorite albums of 2021, and Beave is proud of having only one jazz album in the Top 10. SPOILER ALERT: No Imagine Dragons. Beave has THREE Australian albums in his Top Ten, and has accepted the Prime Minister's invitation to come down under for a continental tour. Len and Beave also talk the "Jagbags shakes", concerning the fears of potential guests at the prospect of coming on the podcast and sitting in our giant collective shadow. We also discuss the spinoff episode "Catbags", where we talk about our cats. RATINGS BLOCKBUSTER!!

Julien Baker: My Faith (Is The Fabric)

Julien Baker: My Faith (Is The Fabric)

The music of the South is always drawing upon the church, either relishing in it, or rebelling from it. When Memphis-born artist Julien Baker started reckoning with her faith, “the entire paradigm of my life evaporated.” Since then, Julien has channeled this reckoning into her music, lacing her lyrics with radical honesty and self-reflection. In this episode, Julien and Adia share about how their relationship to God and religion has influenced their music. MIXTAPES WITH MIKE: NEW STUFF WE LIKE

Due to unforeseen circumstances last weeks guest had to re-schedule so I asked a handful of people to tell me about two recent releases they can't get enough of and we all made a mixtape.

In this episode I spoke to producer and musician Dave Thompson, singer sonwriter and podcaster Colin Brown, Rollerskating cookie baking musician Charlotte Lombardi, a guy from the U.S called Alberto who I found on Stereo and I'm pretty sure went to toilet while speaking to me and I also picked a  couple of tracks myself.

    Redemption Songs (feat. Julien Baker)

    Redemption Songs (feat. Julien Baker)

When Julien Baker and Hanif first met, they felt pulled by the orbit of each other’s work—work that is emotionally layered and complex. This week on the show, Hanif and Julien catch up. Of course, they talk about Julien’s recent album release, Little Oblivions —which Hanif wrote the liner notes for— but they also get into ideas of self-redemption, digesting emotions through music, and missing the miraculous feeling of live music. Plus, Hanif and Julien collaborate on a playlist of their personal praise songs; the music they would play in their own respective churches.
