This is the story of the first woman to reach the top of Everest. This is also the story of the first woman to successfully complete the Seven Summits project which involved reaching the highest peaks on all seven continents, including Antarctica. This is also the story of a fight - a fight against the patriarchal system of eastern lands. This system silently contaminates and affects anyone, regardless of gender, like a creeping layer of mould. The social problem comes out in all its violence when certain words, habits and behaviours have the power to fade dreams away, bury emotions and deprive people of their freedom.

This week, Drewby and Yergy discuss the tragic case of Junko Furuta, a Japanese high-school student who was abducted, tortured, raped, and murdered in the late 1980's. Her murder case was named "Concrete-Encased High School Girl Murder Case," due to her body being discovered in a concrete drum.

Approximately 100 people knew about Furuta's captivity, but either did nothing about it or themselves participated in the torture and murder. Most of the participants were friends of the teenage boys, who were low-ranking members of the Yakuza. We draw parallels between this case and the murder of Kitty Genovese regarding the many people who knew about what was going on and refused to act despite clear knowledge that somebody was suffering or dying.

Quarantaquattro sono i giorni che Junko Furuta ha passato in un appartamento. In quel periodo a cavallo tra il 1988 e il 1989 la sedicenne venne torturata da quattro suoi coetanei, gli stessi che la sequestrarono e la portarono alla morte dopo orribili sevizie.

Danilo Manzi ha raccontato la sua storia in un fumetto breve intitolato Junko, uscito nel 2018 per Hollow Press. Lo fa attraverso la partita a mahjong cui è appesa la vita delle ragazze. Le tessere e le mani si muovono sulla superficie del tavolo che Manzi lascia quasi sempre fuori campo come a suggerirci che il vero gioco e la vera strategia stanno altrove. Infatti superata la linea di demarcazione del tavolo e abbandonate le tessere, Manzi dà vita a un gioco psicologico che lentamente si trasforma in una storia di fantasmi. La matita di Manzi ha la forma dell'incubo sottile, gli spazi che costruisce brulicano di sporco e malvagità, i corpi dei carnefici invece sono statue disarmoniche che cercano di riempire la scena senza grossi risultati. L'unico vero corpo è quello martoriato di Junko Furuta, uno spirito di vendetta la cui presenza è centellinata e per questo ancora più deflagrante.

Ma quello che possiamo leggere in queste pagine, non è altro che la somma degli elementi di un lungo percorso di ricerca. Manzi infatti inseguiva questa storia già da qualche anno, accumulando prove e tentativi, fumetti e racconti, per cercare di trovare il modo giusto di raccontare la vicenda. Questa intervista è il riassunto di questa ricerca.

When someone tortures just, for the sake of it,  That's when we are forced to explore the darkest aspects of what we are capable of doing to one another when we seem to lose all remnants of what it means to be a civilized member of society.
