    S05E07 | It's Layered | Delve Deeper Into.. Allyship

    S05E07 | It's Layered | Delve Deeper Into.. Allyship

Allyship is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as “the quality or practice of helping or supporting other people who are part of a group that is treated badly or unfairly, although you are not yourself a member of this group. One of the most important ways to practise allyship is just to listen. Allyship means using your power, position, or privilege to uplift others.” It is also an acronym for Action, Listening, Learning and Yielding (A.L.L.Y.).

From #BlackLivesMatter, #StopAsianHate, #LGTBQIA+rights to the #warinGaza and the #warinUkraine, there have been numerous global incidents over the last few years that have garnered attention and highlighted the need for allies.

In this episode, we discuss allyship, what it is, the challenges of it, why it is necessary, how to properly inform oneself and encourage participation in some causes. We also delve into allyship on the ground level as Zimbabweans, dissecting patriarchy and how men can be allies against it. This is truly a layered topic which evokes a myriad of emotions and questions.

How can you be an ally? What should you read to be properly informed when seeking to be an ally? What is the best way to be an ally? Delve deeper with us into allyship and how complex yet necessary it is.

It is Thursday on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast. In this episode, we talk about the Las Vegas Aces being the first WNBA back to back championship team in twenty-one years. A’ja Wilson was the Finals MVP. Trey Songz has been sued by another two women claiming that he sexually assaulted them while they were passed out at a party in his Los Angeles estate. The women are accusing Trey Songz with sexual assault and battery for an incident in 2015. Will Smith and the rest of the Smith clan showed up for Jada Pinkett Smith at her Baltimore book signing for her new book titled Worthy. Jada Pinkett Smith is also causing a rift between her and her children. Jussie Smollett has entered rehab in the Chicago area after a tough few years. People close to the actor are saying that he is doing the necessary work to get better. Jeff Johnson is back on with the RSMS crew with Three Things You Need to Know and this time he is talking about the war going on between Israel and Hamas. Is Pride for Not-Queer People?

    Is Pride for Not-Queer People?

On this week’s episode, hosts Tre’vell Anderson and jarrett hill make a call back to Tre’vell’s Dis/Honrable Mention of Ncuti Gatwa’s British Vogue’s Pride Issue feature in Ep #174. In the issue, Gatwa claims he chooses not to label himself as queer, which poses the question: has Pride rebranded (again) to fit those who do not identify as queer?

But first, jarrett and Tre’vell discuss the state of employment, or rather unemployment, in media considering the rise of publication layoffs, like Buzzfeed News with 15% staff layoffs and Insider with 10%, just this past April. With many more platforms following the same trend, the future of journalism looks uncertain. And later, we get a history lesson on the very first Queen of Drag.

Ep. 114 - The Problem With "Gentle Parenting"

My thoughts on the culture of moms who don’t believe in discipline. Plus, the brothers who were paid by Jussie Smollett to attack him on a Chicago street finally break their silence. And, Drew Barrymore's bizarre interaction with Dylan Mulvaney.

Cookies and Screams AKA The Empire Pilot

Cookies and Screams AKA The Empire Pilot

Happy Wine Wednesday! As you'll hear in the intro, this week's episode is one that I've been wanting to do for a very long time.  Special guest Candi returns this week to discuss the pilot episode of the messy, messy Fox drama/musical - Empire.  We've got the main discussion about the pilot episode and a really fun spoiler segment in which we discuss the top 10 ridiculous Empire moments.

Empire is my current comfort show and having watched the entire series multiple times, unpacking this mess with Candi was like therapy.  As for the pilot, we talk about the casting of Cookie and Lucious.  Could you see Monique as Cookie or Wesley Snipes as Lucious? We also talk about our impressions of the newcomers to whom we were introduced, including Bryshere Gray, Trai Byers, and Jussie Smollett.  If you're looking for commentary about Jussie outside of his role on Empire, you'll have to stick around for the spoiler segment.

You can't talk about Empire without touching on the show's amazing music, so we share our favorite songs from the pilot.  We discuss our favorite characters from this introductory episode and share what we liked and what we didn't like overall.  In our closing arguments, we share whether or not you should continue with Empire if you've only watched the pilot.  And, as always, we get thirsty! Who is so hot you might do a 17-year bid in prison for them?

During the spoiler segment, we talk ridiculous moments, thoughts on the series finale, what Empire got right, and Empire's greatest crime against television writing.  We get into the Jussie of it all and remind folks that he wasn't the only one with some off-screen messiness as the series wrapped.  Say what you want about Empire, Lee Daniels leveraged his success to attract some serious heavy hitters to the series and we discuss which big name actor appearances we  enjoyed.  I also stand in my truth about my hatred of musicals, the very limited list of musicals that I actually enjoy, and Candi very kindly reminds me that Empire is in fact a musical show.

As always, we love you for listening.  Find and follow Candi on Twitter here.

Of course we’re going to talk about this historic Oscars where Ariana DeBose (The first Latina to win since Rita Moreno) Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina King hosting and of course That Slap…though we will need white folks to refrain from commenting for 5 business days. These things affect Black folks differently due to linked lineage- we discuss. Speaking of complicated black issues, Jussie Smollett has been sentenced, and James saw Todrick Hall live, after his problematic Celebrity Big Brother stint. In the main korner James talks about the new show “The Problem with Jon Stewart '' and is an episode of white people talking about racism, how it went awry and gave a glimpse into the minds of white folks and the challenges ahead in dismantling white supremacy. Plus things white folks should and can do to combat racism in their worlds. Plus, everyone seems so sure this is the worst thing to ever happen at the Oscars, and with it almost 100 we have a list of other events that are historically just as bad, if not worse.

    And the Oscar goes to...

    And the Oscar goes to...

Welcome to Episode 99!!  This week Casey & Mark are have lots to discuss and plenty to paint.  It's time for the annual Painted Trash Oscars episode and this year, The Boys are giving you their thoughts on this years nominees (and snubs) in the top categories (and their not all good).  So fill up your port vintage and put on a fresh diaper, 'cuz here we go!

In this week's Trash Pick-Up, The Boys are discussing a short trip for some fun in the sun in Palm Springs, CA --- well, what they remember of it--- to celebrate upcoming birthdays.  From self care, to pool time, to meals, and wheels, it is clear memories were made.

Then it's on to the Midsection - and this is one of the most popular episode of the year-- the annual Oscars episodes.  This year Casey & Mark are covering the nominees and snubs in the top 5 categories and making their predictions on who the winner will (and should) be. " Who will pull an upset?" " Who will shock?"  "Who will turn out? " "Who will show out on the carpet?" The Boys have predictions for you to help with your Oscars pool and of course, the painting gets colorful as it will when films are involved in the discussion.

Next it's on  to everyone's fave, Trash Talk.  This week, in an abbreviated Trash Talk, Casey is reviewing the viral video from the sentencing hearing for Jussie Smollett with the defendant addressing the judge in the case directly in his own defense with an outburst that seemed confusing and uncomfortable.  Additionally, after the sentence is handed down, several days later, Smollett finds himself yet again targeted for back lash by motions filed for his release.  To close out this week's segment, Mark is sharing with Casey news out of Louisiana about a new guest at a Popeye's fast food

Closing this episode are Recommendations (or wreck-o-men-dations) from both Casey & Mark. This week Casey is recommending a documentary now streaming on Netflix about a rap/ hip hop superstar.  Mark is recommending a limited series  now streaming on Netflix starring a favorite actress of Painted Trash.

This week is a goodie!  The annual Oscars episode of Painted Trash is one we look forward to yearly --- predictions, tea, recommendations, etc -- this one is an important one for all those who love film.  So fill up your port vintage, get comfy, and get ready -- it's time for an all new Painted Trash!
