Erin Ryan and Alyssa Mastromonaco are together, in person, in Los Angeles (!) and mock the latest Trump indictment before diving into news coming from the Midwest, from Ohio’s special election and Wisconsin’s Judge-elect Janet Protasiewicz to backstabbing Rep. Tricia Cotham’s and concerning “prenatal care deserts” in South Dakota. Then, Evan Kleinman of KCRW’s Good Food comes on to talk about her TikTok For You Page, growing up in the LA food scene, and pomegranate molasses. Episode 67: Catching Up with Armen

Episode 67: Catching Up with Armen

This week we check back in with Armen Paronyan, CEO of LA Cannabis to talk about the present state of legal cannabis in California. Armen is a board member of the United Cannabis Business Association here in Southern California and we discuss his dealings with state legislators regarding issues of cannabis tax, regulation, and licensing.

We find out about various bills proposed to make cannabis tax laws less onerous and fairer. We discover where the industry is currently, and where it’s headed, as well as the future of cannabis nationally. The discussion includes what can be done about California’s onerous Metric system of tagging plants with hundreds of thousands of plastic RFID tags. We talk about AB 1111 and the proposal for cannabis farmers’ markets.

Armen also explains why LA Cannabis has recently made the switch to organic soil in 5 gallon grow bags after using Rockwell cubes for over a decade in a hydroponic setting. He also tells us about his new strains and the lower prices favoring consumers. Tune in for an in-depth talk with one of the most knowledgeable people in cannabis today.

Excerpt from I Been by Def Sound  Watch video

Anybody who has lived in Los Angeles, loves music and quality programming, is aware of KCRW, the listener supported NPR station that streams worldwide. They play an eclectic mix of music that often can't be heard anywhere else. As a fan of the station, I love what they do. I've discovered so many artists and new music there. One day, I heard a track by my guest. I was really taken by the flow and the lyrics of what I was hearing. The track titled I Been is by Def Sound, hip-hop artist, published poet, and designer with his own line of clothing.

Born and based in South Central Los Angeles, Def describes the music as a synthesis of hip-hop and his Afro-Latino roots using music and poetry as a healing mechanism while weaving together a tapestry of triumph, levity, ancestry and power.

As an extra special treat, my son, multi-platinum recording artist and songwriter, Bryce Ross Johnson aka Bryce Vine, agreed to join me on the podcast as co-host in between tour dates. Together we spoke with Def about being a young artist, Los Angeles, life, and art.

Join me, Brad Johnson, for this inspirational conversation exploring the story and rise of Def Sound as he pursues his dreams.

The Secrets We Hold & Share with Lara Plutte

The Secrets We Hold & Share with Lara Plutte

Today we're talking with one of my long time friend's Lara Plutte. Lara and I started this conversation a few weeks ago when she asked me to be a part of KCRW's 24 hr radio race with her.  We wrote, produced and recorded a 4 min non-fiction piece around the theme they gave us that day which was "your secret is safe with me" which you'll hear at the end of this episode.

It inspired us to have a deeper conversation around secrets, parenting and how to return to the present moment in challenging times. There are so many great take aways in this episode.

With more than twenty-five years of formal and informal meditation and yoga experience, Lara is now a practicing therapist with a focus on practical tools to care for yourself and others in the present moments of life. It was when Lara became a mom, 18 years ago, that she truly dove into mindfulness meditation to support her deep desire to be present for, accept, even embrace the wild ride of parenting. Lara now combines her experience as a therapist, a teacher, a writer and a mom to support others in the practice of being present. She has a Masters in Social Work and the Arts, is a graduate of the InsightLA Mindfulness Facilitator Training Program and a wife and mom to two teenagers, two cats, two dogs and one dragon.

A Cowsills Christmas, L.A.'s Favorite Public Radio & The Mind of the Modern Man

We are three guests deep, welcoming Guy’s Guy, Robert Manni whose brand and purpose are all about guiding men and boys through an ever-changing cultural landscape towards a better understanding of themselves, women and our collective human experience.

From there, we’re backstage with The Cowsills who are bedecked with jolly and about to take the stage for the Andy Williams Moon River Theater Christmas Extravaganza in Branson.

The Cowsills just dropped brand new music with their album, Rhythm of the World, they share a special history with our co-host Louise Palanker who directed the doc, Family Band: The Cowsills Story, they are armed with teen idol memories and ready to play Teen Mag Trivia AND, they will close out their appearance here with a helping of Christmas Carol!

We culminate with KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis, host of Greater L.A. and a man who truly understands Los Angeles on a granular, neighborhood level. What do Angelenos need and expect from their local NPR station? How is public media structured? What is the news/music/information mix that suits listeners? Episode 37: Rocky Dawuni

    Episode 37: Rocky Dawuni

This week our guest is Rocky Dawuni, a singer/songwriter from Ghana. Dawuni’s 2015 album Branches of the Same Tree received a Grammy nomination for reggae album of the year. He is the first Ghanaian to be nominated for a Grammy and only the second person from the continent of Africa to be nominated in the reggae category. While his roots are in the African style of High Life and Afro-Beat, Dawuni’s music pulls from many styles and his videos are epic cinematic events, and we feature two in this episode.  We talk to Rocky about growing up in Ghana, music, early influences, the first time he heard a Bob Marley song, his videos, muses for certain songs and we ask him about the state of cannabis legalization in Ghana and Africa. Tune in for an amazing, ground-breaking episode from the Cali High Backyard Series.
