    Gaz Coombes’ arse kicking songs

    Gaz Coombes’ arse kicking songs

If you’re like me and came of age in the 90’s, then Supergrass loom large. The UK band exploded into the Brit Pop scene like a firecracker, with a song that captured the cheeky charm they’d come to be known for. Six albums followed, before they called it a day. And a few years later, lead singer Gaz Coombes went out on his own.

In the last decade or so, Gaz has released a handful of critically acclaimed solo albums, and despite the madness of the era he came up in, remains one of the more grounded and lovely muso’s around.

Gaz came to Australia to support Robbie Williams on some huge stadium shows, and while he was here I asked him to Take 5. From Scott Walker to Broadcast to Lennon, this is a brilliant conversation and peek into a great songwriter’s brain.

    • Captain Beefheart - Sure ‘Nuff ’n’ Yes, I do
    • Daniel Rossen - Silent Song
    • Broadcast - I Found The F
    • Scott Walker – It’s Raining Today
    • John Lennon – Remember

Episode 11: Phil Franklin (Caroliner, Faxed Head, Sunburned Hand of the Man)

Episode 11: Phil Franklin (Caroliner, Faxed Head, Sunburned Hand of the Man)

As a drummer, Phil Franklin has been a key member of bands including Caroliner, Faxed Head, and Sunburned Hand of the Man. As a singer-songwriter, he heads up Franklin's Mint, whose most recent album, Temporary,, was recorded in Australia (where Phil moved in 2019) with help from Mr. Bungle's Danny Heifetz. In this interview, we touch on all of the above, along with Mr. Franklin's memories of touring Japan, his thoughts on the New Weird America moniker, and his days in the late '80s groups Egg and the Dukes o' Pop alongside eventual Presidents of the United States of America frontman Chris Ballew.

Corey Feldman 'Angelic 2 The Core' vs. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band 'Trout Mask Replica' w/ Joe Willis (Split Feed/Dead Mall)

An unprecedented fourth podcast appearance for our main guy and band mate Joe Willis this week, and what a couple of albums we have him on for! We threw the question out to all the good people of Instagram asking for the match-up they want to hear, and we chose Lewis Armstrong's absolute dud (maybe genius) match up between Corey Feldman 'Angelic 2 The Core' and Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band 'Trout Mask Replica'. What a week of listening. We implore you to go listen to these two, it's stunning. Enjoy!

    #18: THE SHAGGS

    #18: THE SHAGGS

Cal takes the lead for the first time as we explain the astonishing story of The Shaggs; the bizarre cult-like family that produced the absolute strangest rock album ever made. Along the way we take attempt to take a crack at a difficult question: what makes music "good" or "bad" in the first place? How did a trio of teenagers with no musical knowledge produce something that artists like Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain regarded as a classic? How is it possible to appreciate something that, to 99% of human ears, sounds like complete dogshit?

You may not know who The Shaggs are, but the moment you hear them you'll never be able to forget it!

    Episode 51. American Underground

    Episode 51. American Underground

The American Underground music scene of the 1960's is featured in this episode. While most bands didn't achieve a wider commercial appeal, some bands left an imprint on their listeners and have gone on to influence successive generations of bands. Bands like The Velvet Underground are still very relevant to many of today's Post Modern Rock bands.

This episode also contains a sample of newer bands that fit the show format. It's a new segment called "Air Checks". The Fantastic Fellinis are featured with songs from their new album "Introducing The Fantastic Fellinis". Episode 16: ZAPPA With Dave Cinquegrana
Guitarist and total chiller Dave Cinquegrana (https://www.fivegrainguitar.com/) joins me to talk Frank Zappa and the Alex Winter doc Zappa (https://www.thezappamovie.com/). Dave is an accomplished, trained musician. He helps me, a dullard who barely plays guitar and can't read music, piece together some of Zappa's elusive world of music. Oh, the Day in the Life of Frank Zappa doc I mention is here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aFRBbnF-ag). The "Eat That Question" Doc is here (https://vimeo.com/353927839). Episode 19. Sunset Strip

    Episode 19. Sunset Strip

Hollywood was the center of the music business and L.A. bands had a distinct advantage over other bands who lived in other States and towns. The Byrds started a new scene and transformed old Hollywood to the new hip capital of the nation. American bands were finally able to counter The British Invasion. These are the sounds of the Sunset Strip of the mid to late 60's.

#06 Frank Zappa in troppo poco tempo

#06 Frank Zappa in troppo poco tempo

Avete presente Frank Zappa? Quel pazzo coi baffi?

Episode 12: Jeff Cotton ('Antennae Jimmy Semens') on the making of Trout Mask Replica

Episode 12: Jeff Cotton ('Antennae Jimmy Semens') on the making of Trout Mask Replica

In this episode, guitarist Jeff Cotton (known as 'Antennae Jimmy Semens') talks for the first time ever in public about his experience working with Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band on the albums Strictly Personal, Mirror Man and of course, Trout Mask Replica.

Famously publicity-shy, Jeff granted me the honour of this first ever interview, filling in crucial details of his story, and providing a new perspective on the making of some of the most beguiling albums ever recorded. He also discusses his subsequent musical projects, and talks about where he is at today.

The Hole in the Air team talks with curator/artist/musician Anthony Ausgang about the late artist Victor Hayden AKA The Mascara Snake (of "Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band" fame). They discuss Hayden and a recent exhibition, curated by Ausgang, of Hayden's works, made available by Pamela Des Barres; Captain Beefheart, the Magic Band, and Trout Mask Replica; the curating of individual and group art shows; Cat Museum; the City of Lancaster and the Antelope Valley,; the City of Vernon and a beef-pork mural that once was there, and various other matters of art, music and culture.  Right when the podcast episode is wrapping up, it starts up again for a final portion, with the participants sucking on atomic fireballs. In retrospect, Paul of the podcast team feels quite apologetic for his meandering pontificating, which he maintains was a product of his nervous uncertainty about whether the audience might be largely Beefheart aficionados, or those who might know nothing about that music and scene. Also, making the episode available to the public, months after it was recorded, took longer than expected, oops.    The Hole in the Air Interlocutor and the sounds of Fingers DelRey are heard.

Episode 8: Mark Boston ('Rockette Morton') on the making of Trout Mask Replica

Composer Samuel Andreyev talks with bassist Mark Boston ('Rockette Morton') about his work with the Magic Band on Trout Mask Replica and other Captain Beefheart albums, as well as his involvement with the band Mallard, and his solo work.

Episode 2: John French ('Drumbo') on the making of Trout Mask Replica

Episode 2: John French ('Drumbo') on the making of Trout Mask Replica

On April 28, 2017, I took a break from lecturing at UC Berkeley, California, and sat down for an extended discussion with drummer, arranger, composer and singer, John 'Drumbo' French. I wanted to understand the strange, unique and complex working process that led to the creation of the legendary 1969 album, Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. A great deal of misinformation, exaggerations and superficial comments have obscured the truth for far too long. No one on the planet knows more about this music and was more intimately involved in its creation than John French, and what he had to say is of great historic interest. Thank you to John for agreeing to this discussion.
