Kyle Turner on 'Down with Love'

Kyle Turner on 'Down with Love'

After Bring it On, before Ant-Men, Peyton Reed directed a cheeky little period/genre parody called Down with Love. Its stars (Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor) were what brought 10-year-old Kyle Turner to the DVD rental house, but it was supporting character Peter McMannus (David Hyde Pierce) that he identified with, even years before he truly clocked what it was he was identifying. Sounds like perfect Feeling Seen fodder!

Then, this week’s One Quick Thing is a slew of fun updates about past guests!

Cyrus Cohen on 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'

Cyrus Cohen on 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'

Throughout the much-lauded, jam-packed runtime of EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, Stephanie Hsu shapeshifts from depressed, suffering Joy Wang to countless iterations of the fabulous big-bad Jobu Tupaki. But the flashy confidence of Jobu Tupaki might be a misdirect from the pain she's feeling -- Joy's pain. Cyrus Cohen, film critic and programmer for NewFest, gets into it with Jordan on this week's episode.

Then, one quick thing about Jordan's recent Morning Edition appearance.

    Michelle Yeoh

    Michelle Yeoh

Academy Award nominee Michelle Yeoh has been a worldwide movie star for decades, known for action-packed roles in films such as “Supercop” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and as a Bond girl in “Tomorrow Never Dies.” But it’s her leading role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” that Yeoh says finally let her show what she’s capable of.

In this episode of “The Envelope,” Yeoh discusses her first impressions of “Everything Everywhere’s” genre-bending script and bold gags. She reflects on her dangerous early-career stunts and how she was treated when she arrived in Hollywood (she makes a gloriously unimpressed sound while recalling that people were “quite stunned” when they realized she could speak English). Yeoh also goes deep on tokenism, aging and why she’s been praying every night to win an Oscar.  To read a full transcript of this interview, please visit the episode page at latimes.com.

    Everything Everywhere All at Once

    Everything Everywhere All at Once

The Plotaholics wind down on our month of the biggest films of 2022 with, what is probably according to the Academy, the hottest of the hot movies of the year.

Everything Everywhere All At Once Evelyn Quan (played by the amazing Michelle Yeoh) is a married, middle-aged Chinese-American immigrant with a failing business, a strained relationship with her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu), a failing marriage with her fun-loving husband Waymond (played by the LEGENDARY Ke Huy Quan).

While on their way to an IRS Audit with an "unsympathetic" agent (Jamie Lee Curtis), Evelyn is suddenly informed that she is just a small part of a multiversal war between a shadow organization and the ruthless Jobu Tupak.

    Akela Cooper on 'Demon Knight'

    Akela Cooper on 'Demon Knight'

If you needed proof that '90s movies were built different, look no further than TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT. It's a practical effect-driven spinoff of a horror comedy anthology from a Black director, sprinkled with bare-breasted ladies, centered around a mixed-race cast, set in the Southwest,  and starring Billy Zane as an ooze-filled demon and Jada Pinkett as a quietly brooding Final Girl. It's a whole moment in horror history, and a young Akela Cooper -- the same Akela Cooper who would go on to write M3GAN and MALIGNANT -- saved up over $40 to buy it on VHS after her parents missed taking her to see in in theaters.

All that, plus some flowers for Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh as we do our part to push for EEAAO for Everything this awards season.

Zack and Zo are witness to another treasure hunt of the famed archeologist Indiana Jones. In this they ask two questions. Everything Everywhere All at Once

    Everything Everywhere All at Once

    Two words: googly eyes.
One of the most unexpected episodes of the year is here: Olivia and Isaac's discussion of Everything Everywhere All at Once. The Daniel's new film just passed Uncut Gems as the highest-grossing A24 film in the U.S., and for good reason: it has had incredible word of mouth because it is hands-down one of the year's absolute greatest films. It's sweet, its hilarious, its incredibly exciting, and features multi-universal fight sequences. Basically everything you could want in a movie!
Content warning: there is a brief description of THAT scene with the things.
