    Equinox feat. Jason Miller

    Equinox feat. Jason Miller

New York-based film writer Jason Miller joins to discuss the strange, beautiful cinematic worlds of the unsung Alan Rudolph and his 1992 film 'Equinox' starring Matthew Modine as identical twin brothers separated at birth.

We begin with a discussion of Rudolph's career, beginning as an assistant director to the great Robert Altman before branching out and producing some of the most compellingly idiosyncratic films of the 1980s (as well as his feature 'Remember My Name' from 1978, arguably his greatest work).  Then we turn our sights to 'Equinox' and talk about the film's distinctive rhythms and characters as well as the ways Rudolph imbues his fantasy world with a potent naturalism and sense of place. Finally, we discuss the injustice of Rudolph's relative obscurity within cinephile circles, and why the filmmaker's entire body of work is due for a necessary and urgent reappraisal.

We're committed to getting 'Equinox' in front of as many eyes as possible! Email us at hitfactorypod@gmail.com for more info.

Jackie and Greg are joined this week by Robert Reed Altman for their biggest episode yet, Robert Altman's New Hollywood masterpiece NASHVILLE from 1975. Topics of discussion include the sprawling cast of characters, the incredible musical numbers, how Altman perfected the ensemble drama, and why it's basically the greatest movie ever. Stay tuned for the second half of the episode where they sit down with the director's son, Robert Reed Altman, as he recounts his experience on the set of the film when he was just 16 years old.

    Episode 115: Mysterious Hollywood Deaths

    Episode 115: Mysterious Hollywood Deaths

In this episode we highlight the details of some of the most mysterious deaths of celebrities, or those who run in celebrity circles.  In two of the cases, suspects were tried, and acquitted.  In one case, a death was ruled a sucide, and in another, the death was ruled accidental.  Yet, in all four cases, questions remain about whether or not the full stories have been revealed.  This episode closes out April, and our theme of celebrity-themed crimes.  Yet, for many, these cases are not closed.  Trigger Warning: Suicide is discussed.

Folge 1131: THE POWER OF THE DOG: Die Zerbrechlichkeit der Männerbilder

Folge 1131: THE POWER OF THE DOG: Die Zerbrechlichkeit der Männerbilder

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Our eighth consecutive trek through the Forbidden Zone finds us excavating, of all places, an overgrown San Francisco which is, you guessed it!, infested with murderous primates. (You'd think we'd have learned our lesson by now but...alas...) Listen to our introduction as we introduce a new recurrent segment of the show: the Blue Plate Special. In this initial offering, we load up on a trio of neo-noirs (Body Heat, Trouble in Mind, and Reminiscence) that has us pondering both past modes of the form and how it might exactly realize itself in the years to come. Upon finally arriving to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, yet another exploration of chimpanzee-on-human violence is had, this time in relation to how this new age of CGI at once adds to and subtracts from the potential of the series that refuses to go gentle into that good night. Season 3: Manifest Destiny - McCabe & Mrs. Miller (Episode 18)

In the eighteenth episode of Season 3 (Manifest Destiny) Kyle is joined by script supervisor Katy Baldwin and fellow podcaster Ben Thelen (of the Dead Reckoner podcast) to discuss the autumnal, wintery anti-western that utilized the genre's tropes of the self-made man and the American idea of self-determination as a cosmic joke in Robert Altmans McCabe & Mrs. Miller.

    S02E01: The Long Riders
QIF finally returns with a new co-host, Jeb Lund, and a look at The Long Riders, Walter Hill's 1980 take on 19th-century bandits the Cole-Younger gang -- most noteworthy for the stunt-casting of real-life sets of brothers as various related parties, including the Carradines, Keaches, Guests...and Quaids. How Quaidy is this property, even with a lingering top note of Randy? What's with casting James Remar as a cartoonish Native American -- and the leveraging of the-South-will-rise-again pathos for relatability? And will we listen to DQ's Dennissance podcast? Saddle up: it's Season 2 of Quaid In Full. Overall score: 3 QQQ score: 2.75 SHOW NOTES Want to help defray the costs of the pod, like getting a print of that Baretta episode made?
